Boston Albums Ranked From Worst to Best

Their debut is the 11th best selling album of all time in the US. It's practically a greatest hits album on its own. But how does the rest of their catalog compare? Take a trip with us through all 6 of Boston's studio albums.
****
The discography of the rock band Boston consists of six studio albums, one compilation album, and 16 singles. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1976 on Epic Records. Helped by the singles "More Than a Feeling", "Foreplay/Long Time", and "Peace of Mind", the album peaked at number three on the Billboard chart and remained on the chart for 132 weeks. It went platinum 17 times in the United States and was the best-selling debut album in history. "More Than a Feeling" peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.
The band's second album, Don't Look Back, was released in 1978. It peaked at number one on the charts in both the US and Canada, and it went seven times platinum in the US and four times platinum in Canada. Its title track peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.
After an eight-year hiatus due in part to legal problems, Boston's next album, Third Stage, was released by MCA Records in 1986. The album peaked at number one in both the US and in Canada. It went four times platinum in the US and three times platinum in Canada. The single "Amanda" also peaked at number one in both countries.
Walk On, their fourth studio album, was released in 1994. It peaked at number seven in the US and at number 10 in Canada and went platinum in both countries. A compilation album titled Greatest Hits was released in 1997 and went platinum twice.
Boston's fifth studio album, Corporate America, was released in 2002 by Artemis Records. Overall, the band have sold over 31 million albums in the US.
Boston's sixth studio album, Life, Love & Hope was released in December 2013. A world tour followed in 2014.

Jason briefly touched on it, but Tom Scholz was a big time studio wizard back in the day. He invented a lot of gear that was used by other bands. One of his biggest contributions was the Rockman, which was I believe the first compact multi-effects unit for guitar -- it's like this little handheld thing you can use with headphones or plug into a mixing console -- and it had like distortion, chorus, and reverb. A bunch of bands used in it the studio back in the '80s -- I think most notably Def Leppard, who used it for the entire "Hysteria" album. So in a way, Scholz was kind of responsible for mainstream guitar rock tones in the '80s.

Was shocked to see you guys were doing a Boston listography! But Jason said it best: I was 15 in 1976. And the explosive entrance of Boston's debut onto the radio was seismic. Like the first time you became aware of Eddie Van Halen. Or having We Will Rock You come across the airwaves out of the blue. Too bad but Boston had no follow up...no sophomore secret weapon. Still...be amazing just once and you HAVE made an impact on the planet. Great video guys. Looking forward to that Bay City Rollers listography. ;)

There’s no doubt that the first Boston album is the best, but I’ve always found Don’t Look Back to be pretty underrated even if many of the songs are slightly inferior. I agree with you guys about Don’t Look Back and Feeling Satisfied stacking up to the songs from the debut and I would also add Party to that mix as well.

Here in Sweden (at least in my world) I had never heard another song by Boston except "More Than a Feeling". The thing that most songs on the debut is a hit song is a very America-thing I believe. Perhaps Boston would've been better off for just having one great album? One album wonder instead of one hit wonder! Debut is easily Top 100 album for me probably much higher. I fell in love with the album the first time I heard it.

I'm a boston fan and a hobbyist multi instrumental musician/home recorder. I think it was especially frustrating for me and other musicians because we were hearing Tom Scholz shoot himself in the foot. The first two albums sound great because they were recorded with mics so you have the room ambiance, the sound of the speakers and drum heads. It sounded like you were in the room with them. In the 80's tom started experimenting with direct injection recording using drum triggers. I believe the only mic recording were the cymbals and the vocals. After brad delp left i kind of gave up on them. When walk on was released i was starting to hear strange things in the recordings, phase issues, bad edits, then on the last two albums with the multi vocalists really lost me. Corporate america was a head scratcher because tom let band members help write and produce the songs but the final album tom didnt allow it but the sons were even worse! Honestly i think tom has either lost his hearing or the record company threatened to sue if he didnt release the tapes. It's so badly mixed it sounds like demo tracks. I honestly can't see any more boston music being released and i hope not. It's time for tom to retire

This was a tough one to watch I must admit. Because although I'm a huge fan, it has been a decades long decline in quality with each album! Hard for me to understand how Tom sank so fast with each album after Third Stage. What a mess of a career. I think you all did a fabulous job on this ranking. And I have to be honest, I am that kid you were describing who was riding around with his friends back in 1976 getting into the first album! I was 15 years old that summer and the first album was earth-shattering and blew my mind. The second one came relatively quickly after two years (I was 17) and was good. But after that, I can't tell you the pain and longing I had, as a fan, waiting, and waiting for each additional album. Eight years later I'm 25, newly married, and was into Third Stage. By 1994 and Walk On, I'm 33, with 2 kids...Brad Delp is gone and I'm starting not to care any more! Sad. By 2002 with Corporate America, the shitty way Brad was treated, I'm now 41, and I checked out!!! I got rid of the CD, because it was an embarrassment!!! Life Hope Love in 2013?? (whatever you call it) I'm 52 at that time, with 2 adult children, and I COULD CARE JACK SQUAT about "Boston". Dont own it, never listened to it, never will. Brad, sadly took his own life by then. Tom is a jerk in my book, I'm disgusted by him and the piss poor excuse for a career that is Boston. From the joy of that 15 year old I was in 1976, to now a nearly 60 year old man in 2021, who does not even listen to them anymore. The sad legacy of Tom Scholz and Boston. Thanks guys for doing this ranking. Take care, Matt Street

Thanks for doing this one, guys. Unlike the vast majority of your viewers, I am a big fan of AOR (Yes, I really like Journey, Foreigner & REO Speedwagon), so Boston should be exactly my type of thing. Sadly, they seem to be the musical embodiment of the law of diminishing returns. For me, their first album was a masterpiece, the second was good, the third mediocre and the fourth one poor. I have never listened to their last two albums, and I don’t think I will be in a hurry to do so after listening to your reviews! "I'd really have to go back and listen to both...but I will not do that." That has to be one of your funniest lines and best deliveries. Mardi Gras still has "Someday Never Comes" and "Sweet Hitchhiker," which sounds like it might mathematically be infinitely better than those last 3 Boston albums. I guess I have you guys to thank for saving me 130+ minutes of not having to listen to Boston albums I might have researched at some point. I remember enjoying Third Stage, somewhat, the time or two I heard it back in the late 80's. I was highly disappointed in Don't Look Back the last time I played it. I can't really remember anything after the song "Don't Look Back" being anything worthwhile. At this point, it's not even worth listening to "Feeling Satisfied." I'm sure there's an equivalent on the first album that's better. That said, first album is basically perfect, and there's not much argument about that, really. It's interesting that Boston, CCR and the Doors were the three bands mentioned in this video. Each has a VERY distinctive sound, and each has reached the highest highs and the lowest lows in records. I don't know what it means, I just think it's interesting.

To be honest, for me the first four albums are the closest you can get to be quintessentially for Boston. Although, I do agree with Walk On being much less so and of course, the most recent albums are basically a shell of what they used to be. However, the first two albums and I guess to an extent Third Stage is also more or less classic, because of Brad on lead vocals. Although, you could see where Boston was going with side 1 being more upbeat with standard guitar tuning and the second side, with guitars tuned flat.

Haha, I should have seen this hilarious entire episode trifecta coming. Of course, you all made me perversely curious about hearing those last few albums, which I probably will one day since I don’t have nearly enough low ratings in my library. 😜 I think the debut was just outside my 1976 top 15. Great sound, but maybe a little too perfectly recorded for its’ own good, so it probably tops out at low to mid 4 stars for me. I also remember during the period I used to rate individual songs I gave “More Than A Feeling” a 4.75 out of 5, and I think the score for each of the next 4 or 5 successive songs went down exactly .25 from the previous one. 😂 I’m not sure if I would totally agree with that now, but I do know Boston are currently on my short list of bands that opened their debut with my favorite song of their career.

From what i understand (from limited research) , after the 2nd album there were alot of internal conflicts with Tom and Brad, as well as trying to get away from the record companies (so he can produce without deadlines or something) . The last 3 albums were a reflection of those internal struggles, and....once Brad Delp died....well that may have broke the band permanently, there was no point in getting that last album out. From what i could tell from their website, it was the die hard fans pressuring for another album.... i think after the last one came out, some of the fans "died hard".

Well, you saved me from checking out their last three albums at least... I think it's hard to disagree about this ranking unless you're a troll. Like Joe said, the debut is prefect and the way it was made makes it a special album in music history. It's easy to dismiss it for it's clean yacht/corporate/suburbia rock sound, but in reality this was the album that created AOR as we know it. AS some of you said, imagine listening to this for the first time in '76. It would have been a blast, but it's all ubiquitous now like som many classic rock albums. For the same reasons I don't listen to Boston very often, I don't listen to Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin or The Beatles either. Most of their songs are part of my DNA by now and I never need to hear their hits ever again.

Personally I think it would be difficult to do a listography on those foundational artists. Mostly because they made records in a time when the importance of capitol A “albums” as an overarching statement wasn’t really the priority. Because of that, those artists have loads of fantastic songs but aren’t really known for classic front to back records. That’s my two cents at least.

I listened to all the albums at their time and forgot about them almost immediately. Dropping them into the Boston harbour would be a crime against the environment. The later ones made me re-consider that maybe the first classic one had been overrated all these years. But does it matter, we talk about a band here that worked its way down from a 2,5 star album to 0 by just accumulating every trivial riff, pose, gimmick and phrase into albums that are sheer production results without the slightest hint of feeling and emotion. I was not expecting anything good based on your early descriptions and comments. Long story short, I was floored by how bad it actually is. I'm a drummer of questionable talent, but I think I could have done a better job. Worst of all is the songwriting and the singing. Completely devoid of passion and creativity. Regarding their debut, my only complaint would be that there are not enough rough edges, which usually reveal a confidence in the creativity and passion. I consider the debut great but not indispensable. How can it be when classic rock radio is playing it as I write this?

Interesting what Jason and Kramzer talks about music without rough edges. I believe most AOR is like that. Catchy, much guitar and often good singers. Not too much dynamics and pretty straight forward. Almost more like pop with heavy guitars than hardrock. In the long run that type of music can become pretty bland for me. Listening to one song is great. Perhaps an album. But listen the whole day to only Journey, Survivor, Foreigner, Boston and others would feel rather repetitive. Like listening to the same song in the end. Now. I like all those bands and think their perfect for workouts and just feeling good but something is holding them back from becoming all time favorites (catalog against catalog). I like most stuff Journey did in all eras but they still couldn't compete with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Blue Öyster Cult, Steely Dan, Queen or Thin Lizzy for me.. Not too far behind but a step or two down. Too many songs just feels like a lesser version of another (like the Don't Look Back album compared to the debut). I do think AOR is good music for the future in terms of cover-bands though. It's hard to replicate Black Sabbath without becoming a parody but I could see talented people doing Journey good justice 30 years from now. The catchy aspect does a lot for just pleasing an audience.
