With their 1st 2 albums in the 70s, this Rock band was untouchable what happened?| Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

After releasing a historic debut album that shocked the record industry, the pressure WAS ON for CLASSIC ROCK ACT BOSTON AND Tom Sholz to deliver the group’s highly anticipated follow-up, Don’t Look Back in late summer of 1978. It shot to #1 and Brad Delp’s majestic Tenor was at the forefront of Tom Sholz beautiful composition with his signature guitar harmonies. Up next the story of this song and time period.

The debut record by Tom Scholz and Boston was a spectacular feat in recorded music history. Just landing a record deal was a big triumph for Scholz and his band, since they were summarily rejected by several labels, including Epic- the label that eventually signed them.Under ANY circumstances, the way that the self-titled album Boston album connected with such a massive audience was truly remarkable. The album sold more than 17 million copies, which set a record in 1977 as the all-time biggest selling album by a debut act.
To make that achievement even more astonishing was the fact that the sound of the record was not emblematic of the mid-70s, which was dominated by the disco scene. Boston is a rock band, with infectious songs that more than satisfied a massive audience that was starving for melodic- sing-a-long rock tunes when they exploded on the scene in 1976.
All 8 tracks on Boston’s eponymous premiere captivated rock fans- everywhere. Song for song, It ranks as one of the most complete albums ever made. Tom Scholz went from the despair of having his demos thrown in the trash, to being one of the hottest masterminds in the business. While Boston’s debut album continued its locomotive rampage across North America, CBS applied the pressure on Scholz for a follow-up record to keep the momentum rolling.
Epic demanded that Boston’s 2nd album be released in ’78- less than two years after the first LP dropped. The label pressure applied to Scholz as the architect of Boston worked severely against his meticulous nature. Scholz wanted to create music the way he always had- sequestering himself in his basement studio and experimenting with his recording equipment until he found the PERFECT sound.
Epic did not have the patience for Scholz’s methodical approach, and they hounded him incessantly for an ETA on when he was
going to deliver the finished record. Scholz received phone call after phone call…"How many songs are done- how many songs are done?" Scholz was beyond frustrated. When he told the label that he barely had 30 minutes of material, they didn’t care.

I think my biggest criticism of Scholz is that he epitomized the saying "Perfect is the enemy of good". Because he was such a perfectionist, and needed every song to be 99.99% perfect instead of 'settling' for 'just' 99% perfect, we may have been robbed of more "only 99% perfect" Boston albums.

I've told the story here before about how my friend and I would routinely hang out in his basement and listen to entire albums. Of course some groups/albums were better candidates for that than others, and BOSTON was absolutely in our top 4 (Asia, Rush, and VH). I can remember through the early 80's repeatedly talking about when the next album would finally come, the rumors, the legal fight - but mostly we felt we were being deprived of GREATNESS. And even now, even 40 years later and my friend long since passed, this music is as meaningful and powerful as ever.

99% of the time I only play the first album when I can listen to the whole thing. Once I crashed with some friends and we played the album. It was near the end when one friend said he was ready for bed; we and his wife agreed it was time to turn in. He switched off the stereo and she and I both jumped on him to turn it back on because you just don't do that. He laughed, turned it on, put the needle to the last song and joined us to appreciate every last note.

Every song they played that day had an extensive solo by Tom and the band was just tight. They sounded so good. Everyone and I mean everyone was singing along with them on every song. One word...Magic. Didnt get that FEELING from any more live shows until I saw the masters of Texas Blues...ZZTOP. Thanks for sharing the insights to this amazing album Professor.

I remember when Boston first released their first album, some music critic didn't like it saying what do you expect from an engineer. Tom Scholz was attending Mass. Our in store electronic technician DB (perfect initials for a e-tech) just happened to be the on stage audio monitor mixer for Boston and Van Halen. I never was so happy to get actual back stage seating to see "Third Stage" close up like that, we were able to see everything from a new perspective thought there was no back stage guest events going on. When I first heard it, I immediately ordered both albums (yes, they weren't available locally, so I had to order them and have them shipped). It's another one of those tracks where, from the time you hear the opening riff, you know you're in for a great ride. "Don't look back" is great too, but it's almost always the first times that are the most memorable ones... :-)

"Don't Look Back" always takes me to a number of times in my life where I was driving and felt taken away by the song's energy and positivity. And while their debut album remains one of the best rock albums ever recorded, I can honestly say that "Third Stage" is easily my favorite album of all time. My wife and I saw Boston live in Pensacola during the "Walk On" tour where Brad and Fran both toured together and sang backup for each other's songs. I will never forget that night, the magic in the air, how beautiful my wife looked, and the stage that had a pipe organ that turned into a starship that blew fire over the audience during "Cool the Engines." I loved their sound and songs, and agree Brad's vocals are beyond amazing. In high school, I wrote down the lyrics to "Something About You" and gave them to a girl I was sweet on. (It worked. We data for quite a while.) Tom was one of the biggest influences on my guitar playing. I used Shultz's Rockman on all the tracks of my band's first full-length studio-recorded demo in 1988 (not knowing that Def Leppard had used it for Hysteria). Their first two albums will forever hold a special place in my heart. Great episode Adam. Thank you!

The interesting thing about "Amanda" is the song was finished in 1980! It would've been on their 3rd album in 1981, had they had one. If it had been released as a single in 1981, there's no guarantee that it would've hit #1. I can't even imagine "Amanda" peaking at #5 (just to throw a number out there) in 1981. Who knows? Maybe it would've spent 10 weeks at #1 in 1981, or maybe it would've put "Physical" in its place (even though I like that song, too). As far as early Boston, they were EPIC

My friend John & I predicted where the songs would go the next week, and turned it into a competition. LOL! I did that from early 1989 until sometime in 1994, 4 years after I graduated! Their first 2 albums were amazing. Especially their debut. Not a bad not on that album. I wouldn’t be surprised if I wore out the vinyl. At that point in time, I was too young for concerts. My concert going days didn’t start till 1982(first show was Aerosmith/Zebra.Zebra blew them off the stage). So when we found out that “third stage” was a real thing, we literally couldn’t contain ourselves. The anticipation was like a drug. We weren’t disappointed. Especially after hearing “Amanda and we’re ready”.... We trained in to see the show at MSG, went outside and took care of business before the show, and despite the entire original band not being there, the show was everything we had hoped for. Tom’s guitar work was unforgettable and Brads voice was next level. Unmatchable. At 17, we were so impressionable and so satisfied. Such an awesome train ride back home. Then fortunately, we had Pink Floyd’s return to look forward to, the following year. I still have all my stubs. I personally saw the “momentary lapse of reason” concert 7 times. What a great time to be a teenager.

Boston came along at a time in my life when I was a miserable junior in college. I returned to class in the Fall of 1976 having issues with my girlfriend, who I was desperately in love with. To top it off, a fire broke out in my down room while I was away for our annual Fall break. All my precious vinyl rock albums, my stereo, guitar, clothes, photos, and other possessions. I also lost a 250 page manuscript I’d written about my Summer of 1975 - my feelings of exuberance about surviving my freshman year in college, being 19, being in love, the music being played that summer, having great friends who went with me to some great concerts like CSNY and the Chicago-Beach Boys summer tour…You get the picture. All gone! All lost! My school had to find me another place to live that turned out to be another dorm building under renovation. I was all by myself away from my dorm mates, isolated and alone. It was in this atmosphere of longing and loss that I first heard Boston’s “More Than A Feeling.” I quickly bought the album and played it over Andover again on some cheap record player I got at a thrift shop. Listening to those soaring guitar licks and lyrics lifted my spirits and helped get me through that dark winter until until my parents’ insurance company came through with a check. It took 4 months, but I finally got another stereo system, replacement records, a guitar, and new clothes. I also gained a new appreciation for life and how quickly your happiness and security can be snatched away from you with little or no warning. I know mere possessions can’t make you happy, but when you’re a 20-year-old kid, you don’t have the life experience or perspective you gain with the passage of time. Boston didn’t give me either. What it did give me was a lifeline of happiness and hope until I could get back on my feet. By the time “Don’t

I wouldn't go as far as saying disco was obliterated, it was an underground culture that exploded into the mainstream. Like all genres there were bad examples but also some great sounds. Disco simply went back to its roots and became underground again, it evolved into house, edm, djs became artists, you just have to look at the success of Calvin Harris, Daft Punk for example, discos premier pioneer Nile Rogers produced Bowie, Madonna, Duran Duran Diana Ross. Disco never truly went away

Agreed. This channel tends to title videos to make them sound more factual than they really are. I Will Survive, Le Freak, September, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, Got To Be Real, You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) were all released after Don't Look Back and they are some of the greatest disco hits ever. In fact, Le Freak and I Will Survive are both in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry while Don't Look Back is not even on Billboard's top 100 songs of 1978. Obliterated? Not even close. It is indeed a great song, but come on now...

Professor, I was very disappointed in title of your video. You could've just featured this episode on Boston without attacking another genre (Disco). Also, what was said is false. 1978 and 1979 were disco's 2 biggest years and the most popular music genre. While rock did overtake disco in 1980, there were still many disco records that were scattered throughout the charts. The disco era ended some time in 1981. Those are the facts. While I like Boston and enjoy their music, I was a major disco fan back then and still am today. In 1978, I turned 13 years old. I wore a Saturday Night Fever t-shirt. I had a poster of the Bee Gees on my bedroom wall. For my 13th birthday, my mom bought me the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack which I enjoyed listening to many times over. Disco is, was, and will always be a personal all-time favorite music genre of mine. It was fun, joyous, music.

I wasn’t attacking Disco. Nowhere do I say anything negative about Disco, I like it as well. Although, I wouldn’t call The Bee Gees Disco. Truth is Boston did obliterate Disco. They truly started the BLOCKBUSTER ROCK album revolution that took out Disco as the top genre. Journey Escape, Foreigner 4, Reo Speedwagon Hi Infidelity and others followed what Boston started, so in essence Boston’s first two albums started that trend. I am sorry I offended you. I like Disco and would never want to attack another genre, outside of modern top 40 fare. Hopefully this clears up anything. If not drop me a line and we can further discuss.

I’m talking about the record company created flavor of the week Disco The same thing happened with glam metal and Grunge and Pop and Rock. They had their heyday and then got toppled. Let’s leave the name calling out and give people the benefit of the doubt. Geez. If you’re interested in having a civil conversation I’m game. We all have different perspectives. I have NOTHING against Disco. I did a tribute to Donna Summer in my first 10 videos on here. I grew up on her music The Bee Gees are one of my favorite groups ever. I believe that Boston revitalized rock and refreshed radio and set the table fir the rock blockbusters that followed. Rock was king again and then it got toppled by Pop and then HIp Hop and Rap was king. It’s cyclical. Peace to all.

@@JJColb I agree. It was an unfortunate choice of words for the title of the video. 1978 was the year of Saturday Night Fever's incredible musical and cultural impact. The Bee Gees dominance of the pop charts in 1978 hadn't been seen since the Beatles dominance of the year 1964. While Boston's Don't Look Back Album did reach number one later that year, to claim that album was responsible for the demise of disco makes no sense. From the Fall of 1978 to the Winter of 1980, Donna Summer had an incredible run of disco hits. Disco was still going strong during that time-frame. It was a nasty backlash by intolerant rock fans with some racism and homophobia that brought disco down. The Boston album had nothing to do with it.

My cousin entered a university in 1985. He's an artist and the university allowed residents to paint their dorm rooms. On the largest wall, my cousin painted the spaceship/guitar from the album cover of Boston's first album about 6 feet wide and several feet tall. I visited him while there and really liked it. I applied to the same university and on the housing request form, I put that I wanted *his* room, I put down the dorm name and the room number on the request. Housing told me that they had never had anyone request a specific room before so they granted it. So, in 1986, I entered college and moved into the same room my cousin had lived in the previous year and kept the artwork (there were other things on other walls, but that was the masterpiece). It was glorious :)

As a young person growing up listening to the music my parents liked growing up, I had heard of the band Boston but I don’t remember hearing any of their music. On an April day in 2016, we were doing some yard work and “Peace of Mind” came on on Pandora on my Mom’s phone. My musical perspective changed after that. I listened to all of their first three albums and some of “Walk On.” I bought my first Boston record in 2018. They’ve had remarkable impact on me. I’m so proud they’re from my state. My favorite track from their 2nd album is “Used To Bad News.” The song “Don’t Look Back” is at a whole other level though and is one of my favorites ever. No matter how many times I listen to their stuff, it still absolutely blows me away. Also, I miss Brad Delp so much. What. A. Voice. Definitely a hero of mine.

Boston's music will always be special to me. My best friend had just returned from the Army after joining post 9/11, we were both turning 21 and both had a LOT of partying to catch up on lol. We took full advantage and Boston's first two albums were basically the soundtrack to a lot of great memories. Some I could share, some I can't lol. Every time Boston comes on, even now in my late 30's I get that same feeling of being ready to kick the day's ass 3 ways from Sunday and OWN life. There's just something about it that motivates me to get up and dance, party, work harder and just be in the moment that little bit more than the day before. I gotta say. That's one thing I've missed for a long time in Rock & Roll. It's so dark and depressing now. Where's the Rock & Roll we can dance to, smile about and have fun with? We need that kind of Rock & Roll again. BADLY!
