Muse Albums Ranked From Worst to Best

This week begins a three-week stretch where each of us will be taking a week off. We'll be using this time off as an opportunity to cover some acts that the absent Listographer would likely be less-than-enthused to talk about it.
First up is one of Joe's favorite bands (at least of the 21st century), Muse. He and Kramzer have wildly different views of this band and perhaps should have been covered on Kramzer's week off. But the opposing opinions make for some good tv. Stay tuned to see how things shake out.
****
Muse are an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of Matt Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chris Wolstenholme (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums).
Muse released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999, showcasing Bellamy's falsetto and a melancholic alternative rock style. Their second album, Origin of Symmetry (2001), incorporated wider instrumentation and romantic classical influences and earned them a reputation for energetic live performances. Absolution (2003) saw further classical influence, with strings on tracks such as "Butterflies and Hurricanes", and was the first of six consecutive UK number-one albums.
Black Holes and Revelations (2006) incorporated electronic and pop elements, displayed in singles such as "Supermassive Black Hole", and brought Muse wider international success. The Resistance (2009) and The 2nd Law (2012) explored themes of government oppression and civil uprising and cemented Muse as one of the world's major stadium acts. Rolling Stone stated the band possessed "stadium-crushing songs". Topping the US Billboard 200, their seventh album, Drones (2015), was a concept album about drone warfare and returned to a harder rock sound. Their eighth album, Simulation Theory (2018), prominently featured synthesisers and was influenced by science fiction and the simulation hypothesis.
Muse have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, five MTV Europe Music Awards and eight NME Awards. In 2012 they received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. As of June 2016, they have sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

Let us know how you rank this discography, and whether you lean more towards Joe or Kramzer's view of the band, down below. Thanks for watching!!!

Muse is a top 20 favorite band for me, so I was elated to hear you guys would be covering them. My story with the band: I'm one of the 10 or so Americans who discovered Muse at a time when Showbiz was their only album. One of my best friends, who is half-Czech, went off to high school in Prague and would visit the US in the summers. He'd always bring "news from the front", sharing with us the latest about what was popular in Europe at the time. One summer, he told me about this awesome band that was about to be huge. I and my immediate circle of friends summarily fell in love with them, during a time when no one around us knew who they were. It was like a secret band that no one else had heard of. We had to import Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry from the UK. While their sound has certainly evolved over the decades, listening to them brings back great memories of enjoying my high school and college years with my closest friends. I could write a dissertation about each album, but suffice it to say I was both surprised and fascinated about how different our rankings were. I.e. I can't believe Kramzer rates Origin of Symmetry so low, and Joe rates Black Holes so high. To me, it is revelatory about how much there is to analyze about their music. My rankings: 8) Black Holes & Revelations (I still like it, but it's the least interesting to me. Marks the end of "sincere Muse" and begins the "super-bombastic Muse" phase with the last track.) 7) Simulation Theory 6) The 2nd Law 5) Drones 4) Absolution 3) The Resistance 2) Showbiz 1) Origin of Symmetry (One of my top 10 albums)

Great watch, really interesting to see the view of someone who isn't a fan. Totally appreciate it isn't your kind of music man, but also cool to see a fan as well. I'm rediscovering the band after a long break of not really paying them much attention. I hated quite a lot of recent stuff, I dunno it feels commercial. They've gone from doing epic space rock to 80s retroism. The thing is, I've been an idiot and written off the albums I truly love. Haven't even given a chance to the post 2nd Law albums but I think I will now.

Not my cup of hot chocolate. Kramzer perfectly summed up a lot of my concerns about this band ,so won’t elaborate. Respect Joe’s ( and any of their fans) love of them . A band that if they click with you , you could easily follow to the ends of the earth for . Would have been interesting to hear Jason’s take on them ( particularly on the production side of it) My guess is , along the same lines as Kramzer ( maybe even more negative ..if that’s possible 😂 )

As a massive Muse fan, I appreciated listening to both perspectives and actually agree with a lot of Kramzer's points, I just really like their 'sound' a lot more. Muse is by far the best band I've ever seen live. Bellamy is an incredible showman. Remastered Origin of Symmetry is currently my favorite album of all time. It's just perfection. Weird. Difficult. Bombastic. Unashamed. Raw. The richer and more textured sound of the remastered version just cannot be topped for me. I don't think I've ever headbanged harder than the first time I saw Muse live and they went into the main riff of New Born. I cannot listen to the album as a whole without crying because of the ending vocals on Megalomania. It's not really a song I listen to on its own, but is just the perfect cherry on top for the entire mood and feel of this album. Thank you for doing this.

I'll be honest, I stumbled across Muse very early in their career. I saw them accidentally, without knowing anything about them, in what was then the New Bands Tent at Glastonbury in 1999, and was completely blown away. So I have a real soft spot for Showbiz. I rushed out to buy it on the day it was released and it was pretty much my favourite album for good while after that. I've never properly sat down and compared all their albums back to back, but they're a bit like two bands for me. Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, Black Holes are all decent. After that they massively jump the shark. I can't emphasise just how much they jumped the shark. It's like they bounced on a massive trampoline over the world's biggest shark, with fireworks and glitter cannons going off all around them. If I had to choose a favourite album, for sentimental reasons alone I'd have to pick Showbiz, but maybe Absolution is a close 2nd.

As a Muse defender, I’m looking forward to this. Yeah they’re melodramatic and campy with how excessive and indulgent they can be but when their sound works it really works. The Radiohead comparison is fitting at least on the first two albums, but it’s clearly only one out of a bunch of influences. 8. Drones (horrible, have no idea how anyone defends it. if anything is truly pretentious and corny, it’s this one) 7. Simulation Theory (some of the remixes save it) 6. 2nd Law (interesting direction but baffled Kramzer likes this) (Hug gap, bottom 3 are genuinely bad to me) 5. The Resistance (it’s not nearly as bad as Kramzer makes it out to be, never got the hate for this one) 4. Black Holes & Revelations 3. Showbiz (surprised Kramzer didn’t like Unintended, was convinced that would be a highlight for him. Feels very The Bends to me, even the same producer. I like how rough and restrained it is) 2. Origin of Symmetry 1. Absolution Yeah I guess I’m really just baffled by a lot of Kram’s takes lol

Drones has some great tracks like Reapers, Dead Inside, the Handler (maybe one of their best ever) and Defector. Also some pretty bad songs like Revolt and the title track. Not Muse at their most innovative and lyrics are typically cringe as usual but definitely plenty of quality tracks on that album. I agree with you that the remixes somewhat save Simulation Theory although I think the first half of Simulation Theory is enjoyable enough. Couldn't disagree with you more about the 2nd Law! So many really great tracks include Supremacy , Madness, panic station, animals ( one of their most underrated songs) and one of my personal favorite Muse songs ever , the absolutely epic and completely daft Survival! I also love the piano track 'Isolated system' at the end! I have a feeling Kram likes this album because it is probably a bit more poppy and less Musey (compared to the Resistance which I personally love but it is an album where Muse ramp up their musiness to 11)! A song like Big Freeze is a really cracking pop rock track that could have been a hit single for the likes of U2 but because that isn't really what Muse fans look for, it ends up being more or less overlooked here. But The 2nd Law is defo so underrated and as time has passed you may notice that it keeps climbing up the lists of many Muse fans favorite albums. Plenty of the Muse fans worst to best videos have it very high so I recommend you give it another try!

I’m a big fan of Muse. Matt Bellamy is the reason I bought me an electric guitar. As a Teenager, I kind of tortured my parents by singing ‘Micro Cuts’ all the time, I feel bad about that in hindsight. I know all the albums in and out and there’s not a lot I dislike. The best part about Muse is the Bass imo, Chris Wolstenholme’s playing and its sound. Watch out, it’s raining 5 star ratings in this comment! And it’s quite a long comment, I’m sorry for that. Good Albums (3 Stars): 8. Absolution (It’s a good album, but it severely lacks great song material found on other Muse albums. While the first half has some good songs, the second half thins out. In my opinion this one is wildly overrated by Muse fans. In my opinion their worst album, still good though.) Really Good Albums (4 Stars): 7. Simulation Theory (A strange album this is. When it came out I listened to it a couple of times and thought “Well, that’s it? Nothing special”. But going through it again made me discover some great songs. It still is not really a new sound or an innovative record, but it kind of works. There are some duds in here like ‘Get up and Fight’ or ‘Propaganda’ (which has that cringe-inducing ‘Death Eater’-metaphor which is horribly wrong). But ‘The Dark Side’, ‘Thought Contagion’ and ‘Break It To Me’ are really great songs. Overall after three years better than I thought.) 6. The 2nd Law (Dubstep and Electronica get some love on this one. I like it. There still are classic Muse songs in here like ‘Supremacy’ or the over-the-top ‘Survival’, but also the dubstep monster ‘The 2nd Law: Unsustainable’ is great. Not every song works, but it sure is an interesting album.) 5. The Resistance (They try to bring in some opera, some symphony, some Queen (‘United States of Eurasia’), and it works. Not as strong as the predecessor, but still amazing songs in it. ‘Undisclosed Desires’ was the first Muse song I heard, and I still love it, 11-12 years later.) Amazing Albums (5 Stars): 4. Drones (‚Drones‘ marks a return to their early Muse days. It’s a concept-album, yeah the concept is not great and the lyrics are cheesy. But the songs are amazing. ‘Reapers’ and ‘The Handler’ are two of their best songs and the epic ‘The Globalist’ is also pretty damn good. I don’t even mind the cheesy chorus on ‘Revolt’. An amazing Muse album, the best in their 2010s for sure.) 3. Black Holes and Revelations (After the slight misstep that was ‘Absolution’, they tried to incorporate a lot more synths. The result is a fantastic album with songs ranging from great dance numbers (‘Starlight’) over nice n soft songs (‘Soldiers Poem’) to an epic rock opera (Knights of Cydonia). I love this album, no bad songs on here. Maybe 'Hoodoo' is not amazing, but still really good.) 2. Showbiz (Their debut is a little rough around the edges, but that’s why I like it very much. It has such a raw feeling to it. All the songs except the last one are great. It already has the Muse sound that other albums will refine. The songs on here are so good, it has to be their number 2. The title song has a perfect build-up, will probably talk more about that song tomorrow.) 1. Origin of Symmetry (There it is, Muse’s masterpiece. What was a little raw on ‘Showbiz’ now is refined and even better. Not one weak song on here. The guitar riff on ‘Plug in Baby’ is iconic, among the best riffs ever made. The sequencing is also spot on. The album has epic proggy numbers, hard rocking songs and sweet ballads/soft songs, everything you want from a good rock album. The best Rock album of the 21st century.)

Absolution seems to be the album that people who aren't big Muse fans (like myself) gravitate towards- probably because it has the most even mix of accessibility and bombast. I agree that the 2nd half of Absolution thins out... but there's still a bare majority I'd return to (and I consider that majority to be Muse's best work, so the album just barely made it to 4 stars for me.)

Soooo, the comparison thing with Radiohead... I think, Muse was definitely influenced by 'The Bends' and 'Ok Computer', especially by 'Exit Music (For a Film)'. Ok, so I've finally got around to revisiting all of their albums now. You know what, although I feel the biggest sentimental connection to Showbiz, I have to admit it's not the best album. I'd forgotten how good Origin of Symmetry is tbh. Been a long time since I listened to it. Absolution and Black Holes are very close to Showbiz as well. Overall, very solid for the first 4 albums, then a sharp drop off afterwards, with absolutely no sign of recovery. I beg they just stop now. As time goes by, it's getting harder and harder to not sound like anything else. It is about bringing in a good mix of influences and make it your own. I see that in Muse too. There are exceptions like the hilariously obvious "when there can be only one" in 'United States of Eurasia'. If that part does not make you think of Queen, you don't know Queen. But I think Muse did a lot that could be called Muse-ish and not derivative from one act.

I'm rather surprised that Kramzer dislikes Muse as much as he does as it seems to me that the whole point of the band is to carry on the Bends/OK Computer sound that Radiohead abandoned. They're to Radiohead what STP and "Plush" were to Pearl Jam. I dunno, maybe that's what he doesn't like about them (a pale imitation?), but it sounds more that he doesn't see the connection, which might make him the only person on the planet of whom that could be said.

I have to agree with Kramzer on his comment about the drumming. Dom Howard is definintely the weaker link in the band. He is not bad or ruining the songs by any means, but his playing is not very spectacular.

I can only rank half of their discography as I gave up on them for obvious reasons... 4. Absolution (1 star) 3. Showbiz (1,5 stars) 2. Origin of Symmetry (1,5 stars) 1. Black Holes and Revelations (2,5 stars) I listened to the other ones as well when they came out but all I remember is that it confirmed that fact that I did not need that band. Somehow they were so big that I felt that I needed to give them a chance. It was in vain. This band would have sounded outdated even if they had released their debut in 1974 and they never developed in any direction.

Only managed 5 Muse albums....one of which I know intimately....ran out of time! Good music to be found....yes....some was not 'amusing' though 🤪 My list.... 5 Drones 5/10 Dead Inside starts the album with an 80s flashdance number feel to it....not a bad song but then it gets annoying....bland.... Reapers is a little ACDC throwback....then tapping fingers on table impatiently...Defector is a vocoder away from being Flash mode Queen....Revolt is a Killers C side song surely?...Aftermath was probably the way to go....as it works.....then I did indeed feel dead inside by the end....or maybe I'm just an effin psycho 🤪😂....lol..ok but bland album. 4 Black Holes & Revelations 6/10 Invincible sounds like a Keane tribute band song but Starlight is excellent Muse form. For me this album is a mixed bag of good to forgettable pop rock. production is muddy to me. 3 Showbiz 7/10 a debut album with surprising variety. Their identity is most the way there as is a continuous sequence of good songs. Falling Down is almost blues and singer restrains his howling throughout. Good debut first half especially. Uno is first dip into that too comfortable Muse sound that starts to grate towards the end but good stuff at end too. 2 Absolution 8/10 begins much as Origin ends - Apocalypse Please whilst pleasing, rings pretty similar to the final songs on the aforementioned. Hits on 1st half save this album from mediocrity as well as Stockholm Syndrome+ Endlessly which were clearly the way to go. Has growth potential (as new listener to this) 1 Origin of Symmetry 9.5/10 🏆the very first chords of this album grip you and tingle your spine- New Borns intro represents what may turn out to be Muse's peak brilliance being tapped into- perhaps it's too good and hard to better? For me the nice Feeling Good Nina Simone cover should go last. Loved this album a loooooong time♥️ Conclusion- Decent artist but this is a band who whilst cool to watch live in concert or on TV just don't evolve or experiment effectively over time.... They are Jeff Buckley meets metalic opera with a splash of Queen/Beethoven /Bach like riffage often enough and for sure don't venture beyond that formula much as proved by the pattern already solidified with their first 3 musically good records. They are commercially successful for good reasons but musically not enough growth to keep me interested......whole listens mostly become a bland experience too often and singers voice constantly howling the way it does (and I like howling) with supposed agony whilst lyrically singing about supposed apocalypses alot are partly responsible.
