Bonus Video: Making 'A Distant Voice'

Фильм және анимация

Bonus video to accompany my new Five Nights fan-animation 'A Distant Voice': • A Distant Voice (Five ...
Behind the scenes, the biggest step forward this animation represents compared to my previous ones is in the sound design. I'm using a new editing program now, Da Vinci Resolve, which has some very intricate controls to customize the reverb on sound effects. I used this to really get into simulating the physical space and sounds' relation to the camera's position. The quality of a sound changes depending on whether it's up close in a cramped space, up close in an open area, far away in an open area, whether there's a direct line of sight or is bouncing round the corner of a wall, etc. etc. It's my first time trying something like this, but I hope to be able to get really refined with it as I continue to experiment.

    Did you use Eevee or Cycles for this? Also what were the settings you used for the used engine as well as the render time per frame and total poly count of the project? Getting into 3D myself so I want to get more info on how to set up for good "quality to render time" ratios

    Excellent questions. The total poly-count of the set is around 1,200,000, with the densest parts of scene being the animatronics themselves. I rendered it in Eevee, making sure to enable the check boxes for bloom, motion blur, reflection, refraction, and depth of field for the camera focus. The lights also benefit from the 'contact shadows' checkbox, but that's a quick and dirty fix for wonky shadows that you use when you can't be bothered to fix it properly and just want a 'good enough' button. Post-processing is very minimal: Slightly raised the contrast, and overlaid a very slightly blurred version of the image over top of the crisp one to compensate for how unnaturally sharp CGI can look. The big upshot of rendering in Eevee is you get lightning-fast render times, in this case hovering around an average of twelve seconds per frame. The animation has roughly five and a half thousand frames, which comes out to around eighteen hours of rendering time if I have my math right. The downside is that Eevee sacrifices some realism in the way light behaves to be able to do this, so you have to manually compensate for what is lost. For example, with no true bounce-lighting, I instead snuck in a very dim plane of light casting up form the surface of the desk, to represent the light that would be reflecting off it automatically if I'd been using Cycles.

    @@TheNickofTime Thank you for the detailed response. Fingers crossed this reference point will help make it so my next animation render doesn't take almost a month because I thought only cycles looked nice. A tip in turn though for the sharp cgi, try using bevel modifier at subtle settings. On stuff like the animatronics it would probably jank stuff due to the amount of extra polyis, but for things like environments or props it can help take the "edge" off.

    The redesigned posters are a really nice touch. I love that the skybox outside the window appears to be on top of a parking garage; raises amusing implications about how Freddy's places their locations. Mangle's static pose in Kid's Cove is also a really nice one, very reminiscent of the original game's but without the clipping-into-the-floor bit. The level of detail in these animations and their videos never ceases to impress me either. I was interested in the sounds used for this one though, are there any notable ones there?

  • @TheNickofTime

    @TheNickofTime

    7 ай бұрын

    There's not a whole lot to say about the sources of the sounds for this one, the foley is pretty mundane. For the desk fan sound, I recorded a desk fan. For the squeaks of the office chair, I recorded a squeaky office chair. For the overall room ambience, I recorded the stairwell of a big building which had a suitable industrial drone to the air. I reused some sounds I've previously recorded, like the rustling fabric noises I made for the Puppet in my Lefty animation, and my tried and true clunky doorknob sounds for the animatronics' movements. I made use of KZread's inbuilt sound library too, it had a nice selection of bumps, crashes and creaks for me to edit into Mangle's movement sounds. There's some extra info written in the description about the stuff I'm particularly excited about, which is how the sound is manipulated. I'm quite proud of how 'in-camera' this animation sounds compared to my previous ones, and that's all down to my new editing software's advanced customization tools for reverberation. I was able to better simulate how things would sound in a variety of sizes of rooms.

    1:52 That spring connected to one of Mangle's joints just under the fan was something I barely even noticed in the rendered animation. Which I don't know why cause it's really cool.

    Love these kinds of videos! Seeing the behind the scenes of these can really put into perspective how complicated making animations like these are. The map design was really high quality, would really work for a 3d recreation of the game. I've also recently switched to Resolve for editing, it's quite nice with tons of features. Your editing was also very good. Looking forward to more videos from you.

  • @TheNickofTime

    If I remember right, it has a spring physics simulation, just with the bounciness turned down, and the cord has a cloth simulation pinned to the lamp object. The lamp has the physics and the cord just follows along, instead of the lamp being attached to the cord like in real life.
