Bonsai/Penzai Bench | DIY

✨ My husband helped me build a 3-tier bonsai/penzai bench to display my potted plants. I decided to leave the wood unsealed. The tiers are at 4', 3', and 2' tall. The final design is 6' wide, 3' 3.5" deep, and 4' tall. Oh, and I got 6 bricks for the legs to prevent direct contact with soggy ground.
Materials:
x7 2"x4"x8' Douglas Fir
x3 2"x6"x12' or x6 2"x6"x6' Douglas Fir
x72 exterior wood screws

That's pretty much what I do also...my feet are my clamps when drilling or doing a cut with reciprocating saw on a stand that I am above the cut. But I have to admit that seeing you act as the weight or clamp to make things get drilled accurately was pretty funny. Thanks for showing a nice bench wood working video.

If I don't have a drill, would a nail and hammer work as well?

I would think so but screws have better grip on the wood in general. ^^

Much cheaper and quicker is to buy some cement blocks, wood slats and you are done. I did enjoy the video though.

Hello, right at the 0:02 mark you put the cut list. But if you look carefully, it doesn't add up. Could you please correct this. Thanks,

You will have some leftovers on the 3rd, 4th, & 5th pieces. These pieces don't use the full standard 8 feet. Hope this helps.

Not that I noticed. Looks the same to me still. If you go with thinner wood then it is more likely. I used 2" thick boards.

When putting together after all is cut, what pieces connect with what? Can you put a list of the measurements of the peices that go together?

If you're not going for an all wood look, I'll recommend using cinder blocks and 2x8. They are very cost effective and easy to put together. That's what I've been using to expand my garden instead of building more all wood benches.

@@SeowLikeMeow I'm using all wood. I have the pieces cut to size but how do I assemble when there arent directions stating what size piece goes where. I can't go based off looking, I need this for example: "Then connect the 2 by3 by 4 with the 3 by 5 by 4." Does that make sense?

@@SolarStarseed The toughest one to figure out are the left and right frames. You build one and mirror the next one. Using the SIDE VIEW from the video as reference: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmadq6R7h5eZeso.html Left to right vertical pieces: 2', 3', 1' 3.5", 4' Top to bottom horizontal pieces: 1', 2' 3.5", 1' 3.5", 3' That's the best I can do to help you. It has been awhile since we built this. Good luck and happy building!

We made do with one that we already owned by controlling the depth we drilled. As long as you countersink enough to accommodate the screw head, it'll be fine.

Bugs Bunny what timber did you use? I'm in Australia too, and I'm thinking treated pine might be the go. I think it would stand up to the weather better than other timber without the need for sealing it with a varnish or paint. Also, did you think it might need a cross brace at the front as well as the back?

@@anitababbar4209 You can see my arrangement in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYiYk9Jqe7Odp6g.html They are facing the east side and are arranged by genus. For example, all echeveria together, all kalanchoe together, all cacti together, all crassula together, etc. You can also use wood planks laid between bricks to create a bench and layer the benches at different heights to create step like tiers very much like my bonsai bench. Then all your cacti in various pots can sit on the benches. Have fun arranging them to your liking!
