BoJack's Party of One | "It's You" Explained
Ойын-сауық
“It’s You” is one of the most confronting episodes of BoJack Horseman. It’s the end of his season-long mission to win an Oscar, but deals with the interpersonal wreckage left behind to get there. BoJack is the center of attention for his role in Secretariat but he has jeopardized his closest relationships in the process. It’s a stark and necessary prelude before he makes the worst decision of his life immediately afterwards in “That’s Too Much Man”.

The 'I feel...the same' was the scariest line in the entire series to me. It was so real, that moment you achive something but realize...it didn't cure your depression. It doesn't cure your anxiety, yeah, it's great that you've done something note-worthy but you're still...you. and that filled me with a horrible sense of dread.

To me it was hopeful. I can feel like my life WON’T be okay until I achieve x y and z. This is a reminder to try to realize that it isn’t the actual label that the achievement gives you that brings fulfillment, it’s the journey you embark upon by actually pushing yourself to change. You can’t control what the end result will be, but you can choose to question your old patterns and go in a journey. That’s a reassuring truth.

I love the theory that Todd didn't accidentally tip her that much, but he didn't want to be rich. He saw what it did to Bojack.

@@kimberlyklaus7296 That's awesome to hear man! What happens to you don't define you, you define yourself.
"You need to be better" resonates with me because my abuser waste same way: using their own struggles as an excuse to harm others. A lot of the fanbase argues Bojack is the product of his environment and addiction; but none of these justify his toxicity. He refused to go to therapy or rehab for DECADES, knowing full well he was ruining lives. He nearly caused at least 3 deaths, tried sleeping with an underage girl, and abused multiple partners. This episode was the creators' way of telling us we shouldn't defend Bojack's actions. On the subject of Todd, it is not uncommon for toxic or abusive people to sabotage other's success, independence through various means in order to keep them dependent and useable. It's what happened to me.
That part about how Bojack doesn’t know anyone at the Oscar-nomination party he threw and how it’s all empty pizzazz was exactly what Jay Gatsby was doing in “The Great Gatsby.” Every one of Gatsby’s parties was just a bunch of random strangers who just showed up because a party was happening at Gatsby was famous - Nick was actually the ONLY person to ever get an actual invitation from Gatsby. I wonder if this was a shout-out by the writers or something.

I would even bet that Bojack saying that if you keep on telling someone how worthless they are, eventually they will internalize it is something that Beatrice, his mom, bragged about before during Bojack's youth. Just another example of how we can go from being the abused to the abuser so easily. It doesn't justify Bojack's abuse of Todd, but it shows how the horrible cycle of abuse can continue. I will never get tired of talking about this show.

Great!! It’s such a moving monologue!
my birth father would often ask me what he did to make me hate him. as in, he wanted specific examples of what he did as if it was one singular thing, not the years-long effect of disappointments and toxic behavior. I wish I had the "it's you" speech back then
I feel Todd’s speech to Bojack is one of the first times the writers try to subtlety tell the viewers that Bojack shouldn’t be idolized or emulated no matter how much they sympathize with him, cause he just keeps doing the same things over and over again.
I've been waiting for this one! It's such an underrated episode. I know everyone talks about season 1 and 2's f-bombs, but that exhausted "fuck, man, what else is there to say?" hit me the absolute hardest of any of them, especially since it comes from Todd. Just such good writing and voice acting
Just rewatched the whole series for a third time. Always thought "Angela" and the one when Bojack takes care of drunk Dr. Champ would be great episodes to analyse.
i think its very interesting that bojack's mom saying "you're bojack, and there's no cure for that" was seen as a really mean spirited thing to say, but todd saying "it's you" is a yes finally he escaped moment
@Haley_Halo

I think what Beatrice says is like "This is who you are, always has been and always will be no matter what so why bother trying? You're broken and can't be fixed." Todd's message is about Bojack taking responsibility for his own actions instead of excusing himself by blaming others. Todd ends with a call to "be better than he is", which implies that there's potential for Bojack to change; very different from the hopelessness Beatrice saddled him with.
@fyre_hazaard6083

@@Haley_Halo plus their character dynamics with bojack are extremely different, we always saw todd as someone who would always support bojack, cause thats typically how *supporting characters* work, even if we want them go break free from a shitty person. from the standpoint of what we see in the show, beatrice is the evil mother that only served to make bojack feel like a worse person, so when she says something about him being a bad person we all just see it as her continuing to be an ass to him, but if todd says something about how shitty bojack is? because of their previous dynamic up to that point, its bojack getting what he deserves, he did something more than just 'being born' to deserve what todd told him
@reecetarrant5414
Жыл бұрын
The context and circumstances behind both speeches are different: Beatrice (Bojack's mom) said that to excuse and dismiss the impact that her awful parenting had on him, while also saying that he is basically stuck like that forever, with no hope of change. Todd calling out Bojack was literally a best friend finally calling out someone's terrible behaviour, and that saying sorry does not grant them a reset and rendering said behaviour null: That they are not only capable of taking accountability of their behaviour, changing it and being better than that, but that they have to do exactly that in order to fully redeem themselves as a person. But he also said it with great disappointment and disillusionment, especially at the end, when he stops shouting and lowers down to a normal tone of voice when he says "fuck, man. What more is there to say". At that point, Todd told his friend exactly what he needed to do, but he also shown just how let down he felt when it came to Bojack: He felt disappointed.

Hey Johnny, I love your Bojack videos and I'd really love to hear your thoughts on "Angela", which really felt like an unusual episode with the return of the executive from Horsing Around that convinced Bojack that they "had to" fire Herb. I would like to point, you say that Bojack has alienated everyone close to him, and while that's true to an extent, he never did alienate Mister Peanut Butter. I think it's actually kind of funny how Mister Peanut Butter is the only character for the entire series who he doesn't alienate and who considers him a friend unconditionally throughout. Let's not forget he was the only one available to pick Bojack up from prison in the final episode, and the only one willing to let him crash with him. It's pretty ironic really, considering he's the character who Bojack has felt the most antagonism toward, yet there he is.

I'm gonna say this and it's gonna sound stupid, but bojack horseman as a show helped me realize that i was in a toxic manipulative relationship with my fiance. I constantly fed in to his victimization, going "its not you, its your environment". But when i started watching the show, i had so many breakdowns, sobbing violently. And only after i broke up with him, i realized that it was because so many things finally had context, me realizing the similarities, and then how the show masterfully painted them as one thing being okay and one thing being considered manipulative and disgusting. I really appreciate your breakdowns of these episodes, it was you that helped me even further understand my emotions and helped with my healing process. Keep up the good work.
The "Fuck man...what else is there to say?" was one of the most haunting lines I heard. It left a hole that shows the emptiness Bojack feels. Also massive love for your content which keeps this the love and impact of this show alive and well all these years later.
by far my favorite use of the “once a season f-bomb”. it just hits so much deeper than any of the others when it signals the rift between bojack & todd at the very end. shows how sad todd is to lose his friend as it’s not out of anger. would also love an analysis on every single f bomb from the seasons & the context of how they were said. would be a very different analysis video for bojack
I always cite this as my single favorite episode of BoJack Horseman. It really left an impact on me when it first came out, and it's still just as impactful every time I watch it. Also the fact that the ridiculous slapstick comedy of Mr. Peanutbutter's nomination mishaps can manage to make me laugh in the midst of so much dread is a high achievement in itself😅
Season 4 episode 6 "Stupid Piece of Sh*t" struck me hard. The manic pace of someone who is obviously intelligent but actively ruining their life. Fully aware of what they shouldn't do, and hating themselves for doing it anyway. Almost incapable of stopping it while fully seeing it. A true Id who simultaneously loves themselves more than any narcissist, and hates themselves with the loathing of a leper.
You’ve mentioned Zoës and Zeldas as the first episode where you suspected the show might be great. I’d definitely like to hear more about why, so maybe break that one down?

This theme is echoed in The Showstopper too. There's no higher power to blame for your actions. There's no judgement waiting for you at some pearly gates. It's just you.
I think about Todd's speech a lot - from the perspective of identifying and avoiding toxic people. Someone I knew in college was like that - they would do hurtful things to other people to make themself feel good in the moment, then feel bad about it afterward, and to them, feeling bad evened things out and they continued to do whatever they wanted to do. Then when I was done being friends with this person, their friends kept telling me how much it hurt them, like they were the victim. I wish I heard Todd's speech back then because I could have better explained to that person's friends what the problem was. Todd's speech is also another version of one of Diane's "I don't believe we're anyone 'deep down'" talk with Bojack on the roof. She says something along the lines of "we are what we do." So Bojack had plenty of people pushing him to be better, yet he still didn't get it and Todd blew up at him.

Omg yes! I knew a handful of Bojacks when I was in college. There were obviously people who didn’t have the self awareness to realize how toxic they were and others who had an inkling of it yet justified their actions with their sob stories. Aside from the “it’s you” speech, there are plenty of people I’d love to use Wanda’s line on. The one that goes “I’m sorry things haven’t been going well for you. But that doesn’t give you the right to be shitty to me. I can’t be around someone who’s fueled by bitterness and negativity.” Because in the same way Bojack resented Wanda for being a network exec, I’ve been that person who bore some small similarities of a person who’s caused someone harm in the past. For stupid stupid reasons like the way I spoke or dressed. as a result, that person used me as their punching bag for all their past resentments they couldn’t express to their abusers. And everyone would take their side because that person knew how to weaponize their trauma. I work hard to make sure I don’t become a Bojack myself. Maybe that’s why I find comfort in Diane’s character. That I don’t worry about being “good” or “bad” but trying to put out more good acts into the world and making sure I don’t repeat bad acts.

I am watching through the series, currently watching season 5. By far one of the best depictions of addiction, mental illnesses and toxic relationships I’ve seen, but also some really beautiful examples of transformation through trauma (the only way out is through !)
I don’t necessarily think is this one of my favorite episodes and honestly after seeing it once I just kinda see it as a stepping stone to continue the series but Todd and Bojacks interaction at the end of the episode is one of the most powerful and well thought out pieces of dialog in the whole series
I love your episode breakdowns. They're full of so much insights and I get so excited whenever I see you upload! Please never stop making them. I'd love to see your thoughts on The Dog Days Are Over.
It's You hit pretty hard. As someone who has had to cut ties with abusive and exploitative "friends" before, I understand exactly where Todd is coming from. If a friendship is one person giving support and one person taking advantage of the other's kindness...that's not a friendship, if it is, it's a very bad one to be stuck in. It's bad for both parties. The giver is constantly stuck having to bail the taker out and the taker never learns how to cope on their own. I'd love to hear you cover "Hooray! Todd Episode!" which I also found entirely too relatable as someone who is a people pleaser who had to learn how to take time for myself and say no to doing everything others want. Plus Todd's realization that he's asexual felt relatable too.
This episode is a master class on accepting responsibility for your actions.

I feel like having my spirits crushed so yeah I’ll watch this
Underrated episode and I truly believe it was the best and most devastating and impactful F bomb in the entire series. I truly love the show because of the fact that they only use the F bomb when something so devastating has happened there's no going back. season 1 with Herb not forgiving Bojack after abandoning him, season 2 with Charlotte being so mad at Bojack for almost sleeping with her underage daughter but the season 3 F bomb hit different and more impactful because it came from Todd not out of malice or anger but more so sadness and disappointment in someone he had considered a friend. Eventually Bojack and Todd were on speaking terms again but their relationship was definitely never the same and maybe the closest they got to a great relationship again was the finale "Nice while it lasted".
I swear, I just watch your videos on these episodes in place of rewatching the episodes ❤

The only thing I like as much as (maybe even a little better) than Bojack, is your video analysis’s on Bojack 😅 Thank you as always for the insight on this episode Johnny
These bojack analysis videos are some of my favorite videos ever on KZread.
Awesome job with these unique thumbnails! I've never thought to comment on them but I've always loved this extra polish

I am so so sorry about your loss:( ❤ i lost my bunny recently and i was so devastated. I love my furry children so much more than the majority of people. Sending you a virtual hug ❤
Bro I literally just watch this episode yesterday because I was feeling down I can’t believe ya posted a video about it 😂 crazy
4:58 I can see how writers were tryharding to avoid Todd to say: "He can't keep getting away with that!!! "
Your analysis is impeccable
Hi, I just wanted to say: Thank you for making these videos. I initially followed you because of the South Park videos but I really enjoyed your Bojack Horseman videos despite the fact that I have never watched it. I started the series recently and I am finished with season 2. I don't think I would have watched it without these videos

Found this comment again! I am on episode 4 of season 6 now! Can't believe I'm almost finished with it
I think you should cover 'The Telescope' as well as the other two episodes to drop an 'F' bomb, 'Thoughts and Prayers' and 'A Quick One While He's Away'! 'Brrap Brrap Pew Pew' would be an awesome one too.
Man it's like you were reading my mind. I was thinking about this whole scene and how people need to hear this including me. How our actions is what makes us and no amount of trauma and hardships can justify our shitty behavior
each essay of yours needs an ovation sound at the end
I just think all of Bojack episodes are gold. And all ideas in it are brilliant. Season 3 and it’s ending broke my heart and fleshbacked me into relationship with my best friend with whom we’ve been together for ten years already. But in 2019…man, I wasn’t Todd in this situation
The fact that Diane predicts BoJacks suicide, but she's the one who isn't there to stop him in the final season
Love these breakdowns
ive been waiting for this one.
Jesse's voice acting hits so hard in this episode, especially cuz he probably sees in BJ a lot of Walt's behavior

Look if Aaron Paul had a nickel for every time he played a 20something beanie wearing stoner with a toxic/borderline abuser older male mentor figure, he'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened twice.

Love your bojack videos so much
Wow I’m early for once, love these videos, keep it up
"You cant do shity thing and feel bad about yourself" thats a life lesson there
No way, I’m so early! Love your channel.
This is the best written animated series in history of animation, and you just keep on reaffirming that fact.
I live for Jonny’s uploads
Love these videos!
Love this video!!
I’m struggling with the “I feel… the same”. I for once did what I’ve always dreamed doing and now I just have to keep doing it. I don’t feel proud or fulfilled, it’s just another day in the same routine.
I loved the Todd appreciation in the middle of the video
Yooooo me and my bf just watched this episode last night. This is such a blessed upload
Oooo yay I’m never this early, I love these videos!
I forgot why he had a CGI double 😅 always love the analysis episode

One episode that probably deserves a breakdown is "Lovin That Cali Lifestyle"
Hey Johnny, I absolutely love your content and your BoJack videos, it's such a deep insight on a show that has a lot to say and you say it very well with your videos. I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a video on the episode "Still Broken", it's really the only time we see the full Horsin' Around cast in an episode, we're told a bit of story through their flashbacks but their must be more to tell about it. Herb's death brings the cast together one final time while also revealing something that not all of them were aware of. Of course Henry Winkler is the funny special guest in the episode but he also plays a role within it, everything from the words he says to the role he played in trying to remove Herb's novel. It would be awesome if you would consider doing a video on that episode, I think it would be awesome! Love your videos, keep up the good work!
Every time I feel the unhealthy urge to watch bojack again I watch one of these vids and am safe again
I have seen this show 10 times over now, and the way certain lines were delivered will never fail to make me cry. this show is truly incredible. I’m not sure I’ve ever loved a piece of art so much. there’s so much depth. the way they tackle so many different areas and never missed. actually blows my mind. thank you for these analyses! it just fuels my love for this show and continues to blow my mind and expand on things I have missed even through all my rewatches! 🫶
Hi Johnny, I really love all your videos on Bojack Horseman, always so interesting to hear. I would love to see you cover more of the Diane-focused episodes as I think her arc is my favorite on the show. Apart from the ones about her family and internal issues like Live Fast Diane Nguyen or The Dog Days Are Over the social commentary episodes like Hank After Dark or Thoughts and Prayers are so interesting to me, I would love to hear your take on them
from how herb talked in the telescope, bojack being a coward against angela wouldnt have even ended their friendship if bojack had just even tried to reach out to herb afterwards, since he had said that "all i needed was a friend". like, they show herb and his character i think at least as being very understanding, so i imagine there would be animosity and anger towards bojack for not backing him up, but after a time with bojack trying to reach out...they could have stayed friends at least for a little while.
