BoJack's Happy Ending | "The Face of Depression" Explained

Ойын-сауық

SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASONS 1-6 OF BOJACK HORSEMAN
The Face of Depression is the most cathartic episode of BoJack Horseman, and if this was a different show, it might have been the series finale. For 5 seasons we saw BoJack’s selfishness and toxicity permeate throughout his life and the lives of those he cares about. But now, after his stint in rehab, we actually start to see important growth from a man who didn’t think he was capable of change. Over the course of The Face of Depression, BoJack starts to understand what it means to be a present and caring friend, and not unlike his toxicity, this change starts to have tangible effects that permeate his friends’ lives. And though we know the show would go on to hold BoJack accountable for the ways he hurt and abused people, this was still one of the most important stops on BoJack’s journey. One that tells us, it’s never too late to change for the better.

this is how my dad always tried to prove to me he was sober. Both of my parents were alcoholics and dabbled in other things, and I guess I unconscionably never expected them to remember anything because they didn't so I was constantly reminding them of everything they had to do. Wake them up for work, call them to change laundry, make sure they ate. Whenever my dad goes to rehab and is sober for a little while he always says "I remember things im sober now" and I hate that sentence because I know it won't be for long.

I feel like a lot of people do not know why they are watching a show. At the beginning a show can be as brilliantly written as you want - the main audience is looking for entertainment. And relapsing after relapsing stops being entertaining if you cannot look beneath the entertainment and realize what a beautiful and moving story there is.

Thank you! I honestly think what’s actually “getting old” is seeing shows/movies where the troubled characters wake up one day and just are better forever. That’s that. Seeing him go through so much change, relapse, and then going back to being better and continuing to work on himself is so so so SO much more powerful.

It's a sad reality. You can improve, but the consequences of your past actions won't just dissapear because you changed. It's not like trying to distance yourself from the "old you" is going to save you from that. Maybe it's for the best. I don't think Bojack would have been able to live in peace with that metaphorical dagger dangling above his head. At least know that he was held accountable, he can truly move on from those mistakes.

I remember when I first started watching the show, I was in a rough space mentally and really immature (I was like 15 or 16 at the time.) I remember Bojack always using the excuse that he was a shitty person because he was depressed and I honestly felt the same way. I felt like I was doomed to repeat the same cycle of being depressed, acting shitty, feeling guilty and becoming more depressed, rinse and repeat. I felt like I shouldn't even bother being a better person because I couldn't. As the show went and I grew up, I realized I was wrong. I'll be 21 next month and I may still be depressed and currently living in a... suboptimal situation, but I've made efforts to be better. I can't say that I've struggled with alcoholism or drugs, or that I've done things as bad as Bojack has, but I've made my mistakes and I've hurt people. Now I really feel like a different person and I've done a lot to better myself in the past few years. I can't take away what I've done, but I've accepted it and no longer feel consumed by regret.

You can see the knock-on effect of his childhood in which his parents abuse him and how he damages the people around him from picking up those behaviours due to lack of self-worth and love. A painfully relatable outcome for me and many others - from something you have little to no control over when you're young, and the only way to stop the cycle from it happening to people like Bojack, passed onto Sarah Lynn, is to find self love and purpose.

I'm really surprised you didn't mention how Bojack was affected by Hollyhock's words. She tells Connie "you do this thing where you don't think you can be forgiven, so you don't apologize, but I can't forgive you until you apologize". And I think that struck Bojack a lot more than it's given credit for. It isn't just that Bojack can't be forgiven by others until he's apologized, it's that he can't forgive himself until he apologizes. Like he doesn't feel like that previous chapter of his life has closed, "it's the same house, the same town, so how am I supposed to change"; and in going around trying to make things right, he's giving himself the opportunity to apologize to himself and to the people he's hurt, and he's allowing himself to feel like a new chapter of his life ha started, one where he can be better.

  • @OsKarMike1306

    @OsKarMike1306

What I find especially brilliant about that scene is how 1. a pattern of destructive behaviour can be outlined in a very specific way to explore accountability, and 2. it can be especially hard to identify a pattern of abuse for a victim of abuse when they are themselves trying to reconcile their trauma, which ties into narcissism. It's the kind of thing where they say every single bad thing one after the other and it looks somehow worse than in their respective context. What they're trying to say is that "You can make mistakes but these aren't mistakes, they're patterns and their reasoning doesn't matter to the victims". This especially hits when you realize BoJack apologized to everyone close to him, but he'll never apologize to Sarah Lynn, he never apologized to Gina, he never got closure from Herb, Charlotte or Penny and lost Hollyhock. This is why accountability is important: there's some things that you can never fix and it's part of the recovery process to acknowledge that before moving on.

7:56 this is exactly how I felt until hearing this. I was writing a story about characters with depression and how they all cope and suffer in diverse ways. When I started the story, I really hated myself and now I'm growing to love myself (this show was a huge stepping stool for me). Upon this change, I feared I wouldn't be able to write such a story anymore because not feeling that broken anymore can threaten how I understand these characters but now I realise that this is the best time to write that story. The characters are now meant to represent me and my depression. The Mc is now meant to symbolize my depression (she is the literally embodiment of my depression, the personified version of it). A frenemy of hers can now represent how I felt I had to present myself. Like I was doing just fine when I clearly wasnt. Knowing there were people who went through so much worse than me. Like I had no right to feel this way so to avoid questions, I'd say I'm just fine. The mc's friend who is a guy is meant to symbolize how I behaved at times when I wasn't pretending to be fine. Distant, disconnected, and not caring about a single thing. The MC's girlfriend who is meant to symbolize the part of me who wanted to change. She's the MC's girlfriend to show how i tried to change myself using that tiny part of myself who wanted to change but it had little to no impact. The frenemy has a secret relationship with a guy she can finally be himself with. This guy is also the MC's best friend. He is the change I took in my life. That little part of me (MC's girlfriend) didn't impact it, the change (this guy) did. In the story I had this character convince the MC that she's broken, she cannot forget the things shes done and the things she's been through. (The girlfriend tried to get her to forget everything and move on while the guy convinced her this is a part of her life now and she has the choice to either let it make her a shitty person and have a shitty life or to acknowledge her pain, her trauma and learn from it) I'm not really giving it away by saying this but in the end she uses her depression as a stepping stool. Like she manipulated the biggest part of her, the part that had the most control and used it to her disadvantage. This is all demonstrated through a series of magic systems and demonic forces (meant to symbolize her depression) and that she is the antagonist of her own story. Lmao... props to whoever read this entire thing.

I think this episode was very cathartic for all the reasons you gave. But it's that final line by the pastor that gets me. 30 minutes and we start over. I feel like it's a representation of how bojacks change still feels false to him, like its just an episode of horsin around all wrapped up in 30mins, which is a vision he's clung onto for so much of his past about how he wants life to work, but it never does. It makes the entire catharsis of this episode feel somewhat fake to bojack. he had his nice little cathartic moments neatly tied up in a bow, but now reality is about to set in, which we then saw in the subsequent episodes of the season

I would actually pay to have an hour long special in which we see all the characters lives a few years down the road. Do Todd and Maude get married? Does Princess Caroline discover the joys of Ruthie's terrible 2s? Does Mr. Peanutbutter find someone who loves him as much as he could love them?

This was really my favorite episode, I don't really like to say bojack was a good person, but this episode really addresses his issues and obviously he changes back, and relapsed in healing, it shows how real this show is,and I love it for that.

Can you do one on why princess Caroline chose Judah over Ralph even though Ralph was so accepting of her and the idea of wanting a family with her.

Because Ralph wanted her to stop working so much, but Judah accepted and admired her as a career focussed woman, which as we know she very much is. That’s why it wasn’t going to work

@@dilemmadnb I believe he got over that when she told him that she liked working. Don't quote me but I think his main concern was for her health and being overstressed, they were trying for a baby.

A lot of relationships don't work out because of timing. Princess Caroline wasn't ready to consider adoption at that time and the stress of not being able to get pregnant while also being a workaholic didn't set Ralph up to be much. Judah is crazy perfect, he's written so perfectly for PC. She's always been a woman that takes the lead but she's also ruthless in pursuit of her goals. She moves fast, talks fast, thinks fast. She needed someone who can handle her pace, not slow her down. Ralph was the simple happy family life that PC yearns for yet it ignores the ambitious personality she already has. She thought she needed to sacrifice that part to be happy but she was already happy being a career woman, she needed someone who helps ease the load of being a working mom. Bonus: Ralph was designed as a mouse to symbolize the chase PC always does for anyone she dates. The other one being a literal child in a trenchcoat to symbolize how PC yearns to have someone to take care of. Bojack symbolizes all of the above plus her trauma of raising a toxic needy mom that she never got closure with.

there’s also the issue of Ralph’s family still holding prejudices against cats. while Ralph proclaimed his love for her to them, he didn’t exactly reprimand them for their bigoted behavior either.

@@cookiesyruplover I think this and OP’s comment is summarised in S2 E9, when PC envisions herself in the idyllic painting, and Gecko points out that if she wanted a simple life, she’d have a simple life. Ralph is the simple life innit x
