Well, although the books were empty (which tbf, he had the room made into existence the day he learned about her fantasy room) he did get every other detail about her fantasy correct, hell she mentioned a stain on the couch and its right there. Calling it an “empty gesture” is a pretty harsh insult for getting a room nearly perfect after hearing about it one time.

Haven’t finished the video yet but I love the tiny detail how Bojack was the only one to get Diane’s Halloween costume.

In 2004, don’t forget that PB’s oversized notebook costume, which hinders him from warning Jessica, was a result of him only half listening to her. She wanted to be dressed as the two main characters in “The Notebook,” but he mainly just heard “notebook.” Still not 100% his fault at the actual party, but it’s fair to say that he wouldn’t have been stuck in the doorway, out of Jessica’s earshot, if he had fully listened to her earlier.

Mr peanut butter is a good example of toxic positivity. Feeling you have to be happy and have to give 110% all the time. The fact that at the end of the series he was able to slow down and be more mature with everyone and more honest shows his growth. It is important to show that when a person is venting or getting overwhelmed they might not want you to solve their problems, they probably just want you to go “oh that sucks man” since they probably just need to feel a little validation from someone they confined in.

@@mdtisthebest6249 toxic positivity is the other side of the coin of being miserable, depressed and not connected to reality. You're not awknoledging the problem so you're not actually solving it and it gets worse. Let's say you have depression and they tell you "just go outside and go out with some friends". You do it and you feel better for a while. Then you're alone again and you feel shit again because of course that didn't resolve anything. I think you're mistaking toxic positivity, which is basically being in denial, with trying to be optimistic.

I always felt that "Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos" was created because some segments of the BJH fandom were coming down hard against Diane for not appreciating Mr. PB enough, even though others were able to grasp his problems. The writers had to spell it O.U.T. to make the message stick. PS: First marriages have the lowest divorce rate. Second marriages have a higher divorce rate, third marriages have an even higher divorce rate than second marriages, and this trend grows each time. Mr. PB is also just reflecting statistics, which to summarize this case, "People who have already divorced are more likely to divorce in the future." Consider that he never even got to marry Pickles, the engagement failed before they even made it to the wedding planning.

It like looking at Diane as people say they hate her even know we seen her home life and how she feels as the point of Diane is that she wants approval and respect but fails to understand that she can't keep putting those impossible standards onto herself as those things won't always happen and you can do a lot more harm than good as we seen Diane use Feminist forms and other stuff to get people to see she in the right or to get what she wants even know it backfires on her badly

Dated my own Mr. Peanutbutter for two years and learned a lot. All that positivity is appealing at first but it becomes a problem when you realize it's a shield from having to deal with any other emotions. Problems never get dealt with because they can't emotionally handle that there's a problem at all, so it all just gets swept under the rug. And that incessant need to be the center of attention doesn't go away, even when it's just the two of you. Even if they care about you, their need to stay inside their positive affirmation bubble will always take priority over your comfort and eventually your presence altogether.

Gosh yes. I started dating 23 year old when I was 18. Not even out of high school yet. Around the time I get to college I stated growing up and saw he was either overly emotional or didn't take anything seriously. I was taking about my past insecurities keeping me from reaching my full potential, but that I could sometimes pull it out and do well. And he said "I can pull out too." Turning it into a big joke. I knew that relationship was done. I outgrew him.

I actually really wanted to say something to this as after 4 failed relationships I've actually started to realise that I'm a Mr. Peanutbutter in this sense. A lot of the time I felt underappreciated after relationships because I put so much effort into them, only to realise I kept doing things that only made sense to me and not what my partner ACTUALLY wanted. I have this wierd tendancy to ignore certain things my partner would want even though I wanted them to feel heard with all my heart. I'm currently trying to undo these bad tendancies. It was a strange realisation to come to.

Everyone says Mr.Peanutbutter was such a nice guy, but if you look below the surface, there is a deep well of toxicity below his friendliness and warmness. He was willing to overlook sexual assault allegations against Hank Hippopopalus in order to succeed. He filmed his proposal to her without her consent and aired it. He's obsessed with image, being liked, and being the center of attention. He's a smilier version of Bojack in a lot of ways.

Yeah, I think because he has that likeable and charming personality, and the show executed it very well, its hard for people to see that he can be very manipulative and he can’t stand being the bad guy even when he’s so clearly in the wrong. When Diane blew up after the surprise party, she told him that he makes everything about himself, and his response was that she’s lying cause they spent the whole day doing what she wanted to do. Kind of implying that indulging Diane’s wants/needs means she has to accept it when he crosses her very clear boundaries. I don’t think he’s intentionally manipulative but he didn’t think twice about constantly reassuring his partners, immediately acting like the conversation didn’t happen and then acting surprised and hurt when they weren’t happy about it. At times it honestly was kind of gaslighting.

I've always been of the opinion that the 5 main characters all have depression, but they are dealing with it in different ways. Diane is trying to find meaning in it and exposing herself to sometimes dangerous situations to get to the truth, Princess Carolyn is trying to bury it by constantly fixing her clients' problems and being a workaholic, Todd lives his life almost completely devoid of goals and purpose, spending his time getting stoned and coach surfing, even when he's rich, Bojack deals with it in the more stereotypical way, never allowing himself to just relax and enjoy the moment, drowning his sorrows in drugs, alcohol, and pessimism, and then there's one of the most misunderstood types, Mr. Peanutbutter, who actively tries to fill his life with excitement, noise, and toxic positivity to avoid introspection. Mr. Peanutbutter has hinted many times that he feels a sense of dread and deep sadness, sometimes even with a smile on his face. Remember this line he said to Diane? "Sweetie, you know I support you, whatever you want to do, but you're not gonna find what you're looking for in these awful made-up places. The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead." And also there have been times where he couldn't hide behind a smile when Diane confronted him about his brother Captain, "We don't really have that kind of relationship where we talk about things. Labs prefer to keep things playful! You know what they say about dogs, talking to each other is RUFF!" After Diane pressed him further, he immediately contradicts what he said earlier. (Clearly indicating that he is afraid to process sad information.) "And I'm serious that you should drop it! If something was really wrong, he would tell me about it!" Diane, full well knowing something is wrong with Captain and not wanting Mr. PB to just brush it off, decides she needs to press even further. She was right, but that's when Mr. PB's defense goes into overdrive because she's not letting him pretend everything is fine. (Which is one of Mr. PB's biggest faults. He'd rather pretend everything is fine than deal with his problems.) "Why do you think you know my brother better than I do? Just because you have a sh!tty relationship with your family doesn't mean every other family has to have drama, too! I wanted to come up here to have a nice time, this place is an escape for me!"

Pickles was the saddest. The most doomed relationship. He finally found exactly the girl he always wanted far too late and drove her away by over compensating and trying to patch holes she didn't even have. She genuinely enjoyed the party and he made it a scary uncomfortable drag.

That's not necessarily true, all of PB's partners appear perfect for him at first, we just haven't seen a grown up version of Pickles like the rest of his wives. Pickles was just super drunk, and she was more focused on seeming fun and being better then Diane than actually having a good time at the party. she could have never been a good partner for him because she's just a continuation of his pattern of dating girls in their 20's, and even if the cheating hadn't happened the relationship would have failed because she would mature while PB would stay the same.

I think it’s interesting how he first met Diane when she worked as a barista, whilst he was getting coffee with Jessica. Much like how he first met Pickles when she worked as a waitress, whilst he was at dinner with Diane.

I think the "not listening" aspect of The Mummy thing is more about his costume. He ended up dressing up as a giant notebook lol which sounds like just a quirky misunderstanding joke. But knowing Mr. PB, it's a consistent disregard of what his partners are saying which leads to him "not doing the one thing" (he couldn't stop mummy cuz his giant costume got him stuck in a door)

Love that, seemingly, Katrina's political aspirations started by talking to Ben Stein and Tim Allen at that Halloween party.

The beauty of this show is that everyone sucks on some level, but most have shown that you can get better. I think it’s also very realistic how Bojack shows that while many people do grow out of bad habits or learn to be better, there are a few that will continue to repeat the same mistakes over and over. This can lead to them pushing the good people out of their life to where they’re pretty alone (Bojack) or they keep the same toxic habits until the end (Sarah Lynn, Beatrice to an extent).

I mean one thing I've learned from growing up (for context I'm 21) is that in life there's very few people who are purely good or purely bad. The majority of people have flaws and it's important to realize that. However as someone on the spectrum who realizes this it can be hard for me to express criticism or feelings about issues I have with someone because in my head I go. "Is it a me problem or a them problem " along with 20 other internal debates lol. I've never seen Bojack Horsemen but I'm glad it showed off that mistakes happen in life and they don't completely invalidate a person's existence

I never really understood people who criticized Diane for disliking that PB through big parties for her. While the sentiment is nice, it ignores her own wishes on how she wants to celebrate her own birthday. I'm someone who also isn't a big fan of large parties as they are so overstimulating with massive amounts of people I won't really talk to or know that well. Not only that but the clean up after a long day is tiring. They show all of this and yet people still accuse her of being ungrateful when it was PB projecting his own likes and preferences on a day that is supposed to be about her. It feels really similar to videos of public proposals where the guy puts so much public pressure and judgement on the girl to say yes and she's treated as the bad guy for saying no A great contrast to this is the Bob's Burgers episode where Linda forgets Bob's birthday and then tries to throw a big surprise party for him to make up for it and then has to realize that Bob doesn't like this and instead just puts on his favorite movie, get him a nice steak to heat, and find a small gift he's been looking at for a while.

My partner is the same way about stuff like Diane is. They have crippling social anxiety and hate anything loud (like how loud and overwhelming parties are) or over the top things that involves anyone but me. They've implied or told me this. I am alot like PB I'm overly excited and try to be helpful and friendly. I bring this up to say unlike PB i listen and also follow my partners asks of me after they say it once to me because one thing i noticed is PB listens when its good for him to listen. Like what his partners ask before the party he does from the start but slowly drifts away from the promise he made to them before the party. I bring this up to say you are right in PB after doing things how the partner likes he projects his preferences on them after he gives to them the idea of happiness of "Oh he listened to me and is doing what I asked of him" I don't think PB is doing this intentionally doing this but him being single for personal growth will help him come to idea of "When my partner makes something clear and they are very sure they want this for the rest of our relationship I wont do what I did before"

Another good example while not between romantic partners is the relationship between Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson. Leslie loves to give gifts, but what makes her lovable is that she is thoughtful and considers the recipient's wishes when she does it. There is an episode where Ron was so anxious about Leslie throwing him a surprise party, when he knew that she had thrown a huge party of Ann a while back. It ends with Leslie saying "Why would I throw Ron Swanson a party for Ann?" and does pretty much similar to what Linda did for Bob at the end. IMO, people who criticized the Belle Library for Diane probably saw the problem in the vacuum. She said she always wanted one, so PB did it. But if you look at the entire relationship you can see that Diane's wishes for no grand gestures were frequently ignored, and this was the final straw. This isn't some person who she had been seeing for a few months; this was someone she had been dating for a decade, and he still didn't know her.

It’s also very shoddy work (amusing because it would have been much easier to draw a pristine library). Mr. Peanut Butter wants the appearance, but no depth. I’m not saying he was wrong in everything, all the time, but I do have a problem with people attacking Diane over his flaws

It's kinda funny to me that Mr PB was still not perfect at the end of the show 😂 He unknowingly and inconsiderately tells Diane that writing books is easy even though she's been a writer and have been suffering an artist's crisis for the majority of her career when they were together. To me, it's a subtle way of saying that old habits don't always die hard.

What I love about his design is that because hes a dog, a golden retriever specifically, theres already a subconscious bias placed in the audience mind that hes a good boi who can do no wrong because everyone loves dogs. And because he is a golden retriever, hes almost always positive which blinds the audience to what he does wrong.

Thanks for this breakdown, Johnny! I feel like Mr. Peanutbutter sometimes gets passed over in the critical analysis sphere because he doesn't outwardly show the darker depths that characters like Bojack and Diane do. But I always felt like Mr. Peanutbutter quietly had one of the more relatable arcs. I think, deep down, he comes from a good and idealistic place where he wants everyone around him to be happy. But his deep people-pleasing desire causes him to project his own feelings on others, making him ironically so inconsiderate. It's like this horrible vicious cycle for him because from his point of view, he just wants everything to be wonderful and nice. I think when people keep telling themselves they have good intentions, they often forget about what others really want and never truly learn anything from their mistakes. Mr. Peanutbutter's struggles are so relatable because we all remember those moments where we lack that self awareness and don't realize how much it can hurt people. It's like he has the self awareness to be thoughtful (in general) but can't look at the big picture.

I just finished the show tonight actually and Mr. Peanutbutter was one of the first characters I wanted to search video essays on cause his character confused me so much until the Halloween episode. I remember when I first stated the show last month the first few episodes he came off very annoying immediately right away, like he was all “happy and friendly” but he would just interrupt Bojack to the point of doing the opposite of what Bojack wanted him to do, like the scene where Princess Carolyn is trying to break up with him and PB comes and sits in between them even tho Bojack tells him to please leave. So I thought it was him being petty. As the show went on I realized oh okay he’s not condescending or intentionally rude he’s just this way which is mainly for comedic relief. But you could tell as the show goes on that he really just didn’t listened to anyone but I feel it wasn’t address enough imo idk. They ran that him running off to say hello to Erica at a party bit all the way to the last episode to me he felt more or less the same

Despite the fact that Bojack is long over at this point, I'll always have your analytical video essays that allow me to relive the show in a new way and to look at it from an angle of deconstruction. Thank you!

There's one thing I find really interesting in this episode. When leaving the party with Pickles, PB asks if they should go home and spend the rest of the night together alone (most likely what Diane would have wanted). But Pickles says they're going to another party, telling him she brought new costumes for the next party and yelling "I never wanna grow up!". After PBs and Dianes conversation, it's quite interesting, because he looks a bit uncomfortable with this. He's trying to grow up but she won't. Maybe that's why he goes back to Diane later. And yes, I know he already admitted he still had feelings for her, but still.

Mr. Peanutbutter's relationships kind of remind me of public proposals - they mean well but fail to understand the person and/or situation they create.

The Katrina party hits deep nowadays; my bf loves going to parties, and I love supporting him, but often these parties are filled with people I don't know, so I'm forced to follow him around just hanging outside of circles while everyone talks about things I have no idea about. I'm quiet and reserved (I don't want to add into a conversation I'm not a part of, nor act like I know much about a topic when i don't) and it causes friction for us because I'm "too quiet and sad at parties."

I'm like this at parties too. Someone I used to consider a friend came up to me, criticized me, and basically told me "You're not trying enough to practice." No. I'm just introverted. I socialize perfectly well in small groups.

Mr. Peanutbutter is one of my favorite characters in this show behind Todd and Hollyhock, but I recognize that he is extremely flawed. I feel like he’s trying his best to understand while also deciding that it’s easier to be ignorant. I love this show and I wish they would have expanded on Mr. Peanutbutter more because I feel like they were starting an arc here that they never really expanded on!

My favorite comedy joke is that an animated show about animal human hybrids with silly animal names have much more deep and realistic characters then live action shows that try to be "deep"

I like how the title has not one, or two, but three meanings: “Boos” is not only just going with the Halloween theming of the episode, but the term “boo” can also refer to a partner (specifically Peanutbutter’s various other partners which are what the episode primarily features) Not only that, but you could interpret the title via homophone as “Mr. Peanutbutter’s Blues”, signifying how his attempts at starting long term relationships all end in failure: whether it’s because of him or something else entirely (usually him)

Another one of my all time favorite episodes! especially because it reveals some of the reasons why some of Mr. Peanutbutter's relationships didn't end well. if why they ended period.

Please do a breakdown on “nice while it lasted” it has so much to unpack as the finale of the show. I recently finished the show and that episode really stuck with me

Erica is my favorite running gag in the whole show. Sometims when I'm alone in my house and am doing one thing but get distracted with something compeltely different I just yell "ERICA" while I walk over to the new thing. Im pretty sure I've acidentally done it infront of my family sometimes. We don't mention it lol

You know, it's kind of interesting how despite being such an extrovert, Pb seems to for the most part, date women who're the complete opposite. Maybe he does that because a part of him actually wants to be like that, to be okay with being alone and to be able to self-reflect, but until the end of the show he couldn't so he subconsciously sought that out in his partners.

I'm an a very extroverted person who often ends up dating extremely introverted people and apparently many extroverts tend to gravitate towards that type of relationship too. My best friend's wife has the same dynamic. We love our introverts I guess. It may be that,I wish I didn't have to need to be surrounded by people all the time,and the people I've dated appreciated the fact that I could open up so easily. I mainly like seeing things from two different perspectives. It's cool,really helps having a 360° view on things,lots of fights over whether going out or staying inside though. You can do both in that case,or flip a coin.

the first 6 episodes of season one arent bad, just ok

pickles is stronger than i am because if a man takes me to a party and tells me hes been going to the party since the year i was born i would instantly get so many strange vibes

While I think you hit the nail on the head with Jessica Biel's section, the one tiny detail that keeps her story in line with the rest is that they agreed to a couple's thing for Halloween, and when she said she wanted to go as the characters from The Notebook, he clearly wasn't listening clearly and went as a notebook instead.

The fact that he didn’t fix her birthday banner. It either shows that he's not paying attention to the details of these gestures. they're all for show. Or he wants Diane to see that he wanted the banner to look pretty, but the people messed up, and get the validation that he tried despite the fact the banner wasn't needed, and he didn't need to hang the banner.

The truest thing ever said about Mr. Peanutbutter is when Diane said “You don’t ruin them. They’re in their 20’s. They just grow up.” (Paraphrasing.) He keeps getting older but still keeps dating women younger than him.

Ughh I want a Mr Peanutbutter spin-off. There has to be a reason (besides the fact that he’s a yellow lab” why he’s so cheery all the time. Something brewing just beneath the surface lol

Using the "he's a dog" motif, the desire to be a "good boy" at all costs, which ends up with him being a "bad dog." He aims to please everyone, leaving no one pleased.

I's not episode specific but now that you've covered Mr, PB's relationship progression I've always thought it was interesting how the 3 men we've seen DIANE with explain how it she is in her life Wayne: she didn't really like herself and couldn't figure out why so she gravitated to a man that was too much like her and it was OBVIOUS she wasn't Happy. Mr. Peanutbutter: was an Optimistic Nihilist who would shatter into a million pieces so he encouraged that in Diane which you convinced herself she WANTED... it was loving but because the "Happiness" Didn't have a foundation again She STILL wasn't actually Happy. Guy: The man she met after a hell of a lot of reflection, took time getting to know, and loves her even if she's not always COOL HAPPY DIANE, he can challenge her and bring out the best as they both explore their relationship and End Game marriage. she still doesn't always trust the happiness but she TRUSTS Guy, which is huge for her. Wow sorry that was an essay way of Saying Guy is SUCH A GOOD GUY!!!

I was always able to relate to Mr. Peanutbutter in almost every way. I actually thought the people he was in a relationship with were the bad guys, and I've done similar things to him in that I've brought my partners (unknowing that they were not willing) to parties in the past. We never had a fight in the middle of the party, but there was always an argument on the way home. I always understood their feelings and apologized... then did it again. And it would never end well. Even still, I never change. This video of yours just made me realize that. I have a strong need to be liked by everyone. I NEED to be loved. Otherwise I feel worthless and I hate who I'm becoming. I've felt myself recently losing who I was and wishing I wouldn't change - like I'm losing innocence. But I'm starting to think that's just part of life. I'm scared to fully change, but here's hoping it works out for the better and I can turn out better than this character in a cartoon.

I always die at that Michael Vick joke. Little details like that make me love this show

Mr PB is like that one nice out going guy who you think you can be close friends with but he only see you nothing more than just another acquaintance lol

I got a friend like Mr. Peanutbutter irl. I also get irked by him like how Bojack does b/c "he's too happy" (but that's a whole other story). What surprised me as i went through the show was seeing the similarities in him NOT listening, but actively trying to do things that stem from good intentions. My number one complaint about him is that i feel like he doesn't listen, but I also know when he does things for others, he's genuinely trying to help. Like how lots of characters quickly exited the party due to Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane's fight, I too have seen/indirectly got involved in situations where he came from a good place but it just blew up in his face. As stated in the video: on paper, there's nothing directly wrong with the gestures Mr. Peanutbutter does by itself. I can say the same with my friend; but in context, it just gets frustrating... It's tough for me sometimes, as a friend, because I won't want him to stop being kind and helpful to others...but i also don't want him to continuously fall into traps that he basically indirectly sets up himself.

I love this episode for a slightly different reason. All the different costumes are a fun “who’s who?” Game to play. I can imagine the character designers had a ball coming up with the different costumes in the background lol

I really wish Mr. PB’s realization was given more time. He just suddenly says that without much thought put into it. I honestly forgot and found it weird he didn’t move on. It was only my rewatch that I was like “Oh, yeah that’s the point of his arc.”

I dont think ive seen a show do this kind of episode (one place, many moments years apart) as good as this one, the transition are pretty good and just the whole ark of the episode is just great, im so excited to hear you talk about it 😁

I love that detail that Mr. PB always had the same happy expression with all four of them in the car. And loved this episode because it highlights Mr. PB's flaws, which not many in people in the audience noticed. Throughout his whole life, they had the same problem

This episode is in my top 5, I've watched it so many times. It also reminds me of a time when I used to get high and watch Bojack to hide my deep depression, so it's a little difficult to revisit. But I will always love it.

As always, great deep dive. Its interesting how PB is not only inconsiderate by ignorance and being extremely positive, it's hard for him to see through the situation (the Halloween party). Not even when its not that much big of a deal or even his fault (Jessica Biel). Also people around him seeing this, try to protect him (his brother and their relationship with death).

Mr.Peanutbutter reminds of Bojack in the sense that he rarely ever learns from his mistakes. The only difference being Bojack just has worse luck.

"He would hook up with these women when they're 25" DiCaprio: and STAY with them when they get OLDER?!

Biel is voiced by Biel that really adds to the sense of immersion

mr. peanut butter will always have a special place in my heart bc of how he made me reflect on my personal relationships. even though i was so loyal and loving to the people i was with, platonic or not, i rarely listened. i never knew how to really care for them and show them the love they deserved like they would for me so easily. both his major flaws and character arcs made me change so much as a person

I always felt as though, after season 6, Mr. Peanutbutter and Bojack would eventually improve, and maybe come out of it friends. Mr Peanutbutter being the only member of the main cast who would still stick with Bojack, and the two being extreme foils of each other might help them both. Of course, after heaps of therapy. Actually, Hollywoob kind of gave me hope for that (Stealing the D for Diane, maybe adding a B for good ol Bo-j). And Peanutbutter's depression might actually get noticed by someone like Bojack, where as Bojack might appreciate the positivity but discipline the toxic positivity. Bojack Horseman is hopeful at its core, and II like to think that the final two, Bojack and Peanutbutter, would head down that path of improvement.

Diane pb and Bojack all reflect each other, Bojack being the mc and Diane being a negative but improved version of Bojack and then pb being an overly positive version of Bojack, pb was if Bojack was toxic but had a positive attitude and Diane is who Bojack could be if he took the time to heal and work through stuff properly. And I really like that because it shows perspective it shows the difference of what it can be depending on how you deal with things, ignorance, head on (ish) and not at all

I recognize similar cycles in myself, but without the over-enthusiasm. I'm a serial Fixer. Attracted to disaster and drama, people at their lowest. I date them for a while because I like being the "put-together" one in the relationship, knowing full well I'm hanging on by a thread myself. I'm an actor, I like acting, and when I find a role that puts me in a good light, I play it, until I can't anymore. These patterns are important to address, but hard to break.

Although he genuinely just tries to make other people happy, he's also an incredibly thoughtless person. He never stops to think about what other people want, never sees through their eyes, but just heaps what he wants onto them. A contrast to the depressed BoJack but similar in many ways. In a way, the happiest ending for him was being single.

I love that you keep these coming. Most creators tend to focus on what is new or popular at the moment because yeah, basically that's what the algorythm feeds on in exchange for views and popularity, but Bojack Horseman is possibly one of the most original, best written shows ever - not only in animation, and it's a joy to break down and discuss the ever important themes it revolves around. So thank you :D

This was the ONE episode of Bojack I sorta disassociated when watching so I have faint memories of this episode. So thanks for this

I couldn't help feel so much relatability to Mr. PB. It wasn't until my 30s that I went to therapy and learned taht I had abandonment issues and codependency that explained why I was a serial dater. And after I worked through those issues, I felt like a changed man. A lot more free. And it just reminded me of how PB feels at the end of the series. He's just on his own doing his thing. I always related to him, because I never really suffered from depression or anxiety like so many other characters. And I'm absolutely the kind of dude who could randomly hammer out a book and go "oh yeah, that wasn't hard at all. I just did the thing! Neat." I love how this show has such a wide diversity of cast that people could relate to. Although I always thought PB and Princess Caraline would make an interesting couple. PB's relaxed and carefree nature would help mellow PB out a lot. And Caraline's "adaptability" would roll with PB. However, at the end, I was still very happy that Princess Caroline got a happy ending, which is all I ever wanted. She's by far the best character in this series, and she truly deserved a happy ending, and I'm glad she got it. In a world where so many shows like Game of Thrones had absolute dumpster fire endings, it was nice to get a happy one for once.

I liked how nuanced your take was. Mr. Peanutbutter isn't all bad, but has a lot of work to do on himself, not only for his romantic relationships, but for all of the relationships in his life. I feel like everyone either adores or hates Mr. Peanutbutter, so this was refreshing.

I was with a guy who was almost exactly like Mr Peanutbutter. Definitely the worst experience of my life and I'm so glad he's not in my life anymore. I find a lot of comfort in BoJack Horseman and your videos, they kinda help me process everything and better understand what I've been through. It's nice to not blame myself anymore, thank you for doing an analysis on this episode as it really hits home for me. I feel like I'm finally healing and this analysis has been another part of that healing process.

A common aspect of Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane's interactions is the contrast in how they handle adversity. Mr. Peanutbutter constantly skirts around the truth, while Diane gets right to the point. This is best shown in the scene where Diane confronts Mr. Peanutbutter over why his previous relationships failed. Mr. Peanbutter agonizes over what caused these relationships to break down, without getting to the heart of the problem. Meanwhile, Diane points out to him, clear as day, that the problem is that Mr. Peanutbutter never grew up, while his ex-flames did.

This is a big problem in relationships: he can communicate but he can’t comprehend

I think, Mr. PB’s problem with dating is that he loved his partner to death, literally suffocating them with all he did in a relationship. He’s a very good dog but as a person, not so much. Not until later seasons when he started working on himself. BoJack on the other hand loved not at all. His cynicism and toxicity tore his relationships apart and he simply didn’t love his partner. I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong. What do you guys think?

This episode was a nice bit of fun when binging the insanely dark Season 5. No really. Free Churro drove me to pounding liquor in the afternoon, so this episode really lightened the mood.

Ugh! KZread is such an ocean of content. I can't believe I'm just now coming across your channel. This is a great video! I devoured Bojack Horseman during the beginning of the pandemic and I slowly began to realize how much Mr. Peanutbutter reminded me of my mother. She's only had one man in her romantic life but she's always been completely oblivious to her families needs. And when we'd discuss this,she'd cry,tell us she'd do better but then go right back to being inconsiderate and thinking about what would be "nice" for us rather than what we actually needed or wanted. She does everything with good intentions and poor executions. But she is getting a little better with it too.

God I relate a lot with Mr. Peanutbutter, and the experience with the Halloween parties. Maybe minus the age difference stuff, and more like a period of five years instead of 25. But I have felt like I was stuck on a treadmill with different relationships, always sincerely trying my best and somehow screwing it up anyway, never really giving myself time to process the last one before the next.

I love these deep dives especially so long after watching the series bc I can get back into what made me fall in love with it in the first place

I was 17 when I first watched this episode and it didn't sit well with me either. I know a good portion of his partners were 25 and so were pretty much grown adults, but the late teens and (very) early 20's are a time when you're between high school and adulthood. Compared to an almost 50 year old, someone younger than 25 is a kid and it does seem predatory because they wouldn't be in the same life arena.

Great video, as always! I know someone who reminds me a LOT of Mr. PB. The refusal to listen to and hear what someone wants and the pushing on toward an idealized picture they have in their mind are very familiar (and frustrating to deal with). Many people are surprised that Mr. PB is my most disliked character of the main 5, and it's because I feel like I know him already, and better than I'd like to.

This is hands down my favorite episode of the show!

8:45 another interesting part about the Belle Room is that all the books in it are fake, Mr. PB says so, complaining about how expensive it was to get them, and to me that COMPLETELY reframed how I would think about PB’s gestures, they weren’t sweet anymore, they were performative (i mean they always felt performative, but this was the nail in the coffin, practically a confirmation)
