For those curious, the Azusa Street Revival was basically the catalyzing event of Pentecostalism in the US in 1906, a bunch of street preachers started speaking in tongues and doing the average pentecostal weirdness. First thing that came to mind when he said that was my favorite quote from The Princess Bride (incidentally a much better and more moral piece of fiction) when Inigo Montoya says to Vizzini "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." In response to Vizzini's repeated use of "inconceivable". I have found this quote useful in many obtuse conversations.

Atheist are the type of people that believe that the egg came before the chicken. Atheist are the most confused bunch of folks in the entire world. Any time a person can look at everything created and not say there’s an origin or create a word considering the intelligent design shows their ignorance. But I believe atheists choose to be ignorant. Obviously, my interpretation is correct. If I want to use it to take away women's autonomy, it doesn't matter if Jesus said nothing about abortion or the Old Testament actually provided the recipe for an abortifacient. If I want to oppress and repress LGBTQ+ because of my personal bigotry, it doesn't matter that Jesus said nothing about it. I can cherry pick stuff from the OT (except the shellfish thing because I loves me some lobster). It's whatever I want to use the Bible for.

And then as I started to binge listen to podcasts of past shows and heard the same idiotic arguments over and over, I came to the same conclusion that you did. I mean, for God's sakes, look into the Kalam argument a bit before calling the show with it thinking that you've found the proof that no one else has proposed.

I giggle at the total destruction of stupidity. When I joined the "Cub Scouts" I was forced to go back to my church to get a Bible. 4 Sundays and nice looking book to show my Pack leader. Atheism involves a logical fallacy known as a universal negative. Simply stated, a person would have to be omniscient and omnipresent to be able to say "there is no God" from his own pool of knowledge. Only someone capable of being in all places at the same time - with a perfect knowledge of all that is in the universe - can make such a statement based on the facts. In other words, a person would have to be God to say there is no God.

And completely irrelevant because "I don't believe in god because there's no evidence for one" doesn't make any claims about knowledge. That would be gnosticism vs agnosticism. Agnostic atheism is the _only_ completely logical and rational stance we have right now - at least regarding hypothetical gods. Being a gnostic atheist towards christianity, islam, hinduism and other man-made religions is also completely rational. Those simply cannot be true due to definitional contradictions.

That's the best comment here. Christian's hypocrisy is incredible. They believe God is just and he forbids murder and stealing, but when he doesn't forbid slavery, then somehow it's OK that all-good God ignores slavery because people already doing it. What's the point of moral authority that doesn't forbid what people already do?

Anyone who claims that they are not religious and then makes judgments about religious topics (e.g., the deity of Christ, the existence of God, the morality regarding adultery, the truthfulness of the Bible, and so on) has made a religious statement. Though they may “claim” to be irreligious, they reveal that they are indeed religious when they attempt to refute another religious view.

@@persephoneharrison3439 Even if I accepted the idea of creationism, there are thousands of different religions each with their own creation story, so you would first have to give me a valid reason to believe in your particular flavor of a "creator" as opposed to all others. And even you did give me a reason that I found acceptable, I would find it a bit of a stretch to call that creator "intelligent". The fact that nature is so unnecessarily complex and complicated is proof of that. The hallmark of good design is in simplicity of form and function.

They weren't even killing each other. "Don't steal" "Don't murder" (in most cases) is the bare minimum for a group of the same species to coexist, even animals know that. The ten commandments didn't bring anything new, except for the three first useless rules.

What I love about this well-worn atheist ‘argument’ is that it actually serves to demonstrate how vastly different a belief in God is to these myths and imaginations. When one honestly assesses the Judeo-Christian doctrine of God he will find multiple thousands of years of human testimony and religious development; he will find martyrs enduring the most horrific trauma in defense of the faith; he will find accounts in religious texts with historical and geographical corroboration; etc (these fact are of course not ‘proofs,’ but rather ‘evidences’ that elicit strong consideration). Pit this against tales of the Tooth Fairy, Santa, and Spaghetti Monsters and one finds the exact opposite: no testimony or religious refinement, no martyrs, no historical and geographical corroboration, etc. Instead, one finds myths created intentionally for children, for point making, or for whatever. It’s strawman argumentation at its worst.

Many of them would argue that they have a “nonbelief.” Atheists have an active belief system with views concerning origins (that the universe and life arose by natural processes); no life after death; the existence of God; how to behave while alive; and so much more. Honest atheists will admit their worldview is a faith. Atheism is a religion!

Talking about (Christian) denominations reminds me of that old joke: A Christian was rescued from a remote island on which he had been stranded alone for 17 years. When the rescuers arrived, the Christian proudly showed them the buildings he had constructed from palm trees. "This one is my house, and that taller one over there is my church." Her parents and the priest were rightfully convicted of homecide. Your god either doesn't care or doesn't exist, either way it's not worthy of anybods time or praise. You're going to need evidence for the things you claim exist or there's no reason to take you seriously.

I've personally known people exactly like that. No matter what you say to them, they are convinced you're making it all up and you secretly do believe in it and are pretending you don't. No matter how ignorant they were about the actual religion or any specifics, no matter what arguments you used. Always convinced their view on god was right and everybody else was either wrong/stupid or lying about believing.
