SHOW NOTES
Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! The hosts of today’s Atheist Experience are Matt Dillahunty and Paulogia! Paulogia is a recent atheist and has a popular YoutTube channel addressing christianity.
Our first caller, Jelmer in The Netherlands argues that god exists and god doesn't exist is a false dilemma. Matt explains it is a direct logical negation and the laws of logic holds up, even in a black hole. Jelmer confuses laws of science and logic.
Marius in AL argues that Matt’s interpretation on Exodus 21, great another slavery arguement. The bible explicitly endorses owning a human. Marius argues that it permits indentured servitude. Even if we grant that, it still outlines some horrific actions, like beating their property. People are not property.
Omniskeptic in Canada claims most atheists activists misunderstand the no true scotsman fallacy and feels christians are just amending their definitions. A good practice is to let people give their label and what they mean by it. Atheists catch a lot of flack claiming we were never true christians.
Jacob in the UK argues in favor of the resurrection of Jesus. Paulogia tells us that we can only be confident about the martyrdom of 2 of the 12 apostles of Jesus. We can’t be certain anything in the bible occurred but we acknowledge people truly believe, but we can’t link it to anything factual.
Shannon in TX thinks that atheism is wrong by definition, defining atheists as “god or gods don't exist”. That's not the definition we use. One needs to agree on definitions to have meaningful conversations, gods don’t exist just by naming an existent person a god.
Nadir in FL can prove the koran is from god, using science even! There is not a way to prove any text is from the mind of a god. Was this merely a call to challenge Matt to a debate?
Last caller, Jeff in FL asks if there is no free will how do we hold people responsible. We don’t think people are overall evil, but we can hold people responsible for the actions they take independant the reason they took the action.
Thanks for tuning in, we are so glad you joined us today. Check out more from Paulogia at / paulogia Keep wearing your masks and please go vote!

Honestly it's kinda scary hearing Christians defend all of the fucked up shit in their "holy book." Like one time a guy defended slavery in the Bible to me as "It's basically the same as employment today so honestly it's really not that bad." Then I asked him if he would be cool with his employer selling him, his wife and children to another "employer" and that the new employer could do anything that they want to his wife and children and for some reason he had a problem with that.

Actually, Matt had to school Marius about how to bow out gracefully, by actually telling him what he should have said, which was “you’re right, I’m gonna have to think about that,” after he conceded that he was wrong. Marius initially thought it would be a good idea to introduce the practice of cat ownership into the conversation, because I guess he hadn’t humiliated himself enough yet, at that point. So in fact, he was very much like most of the theist callers attempting to defend slavery in the bible.

If I was Matt, as soon as they brought up this “paying off a debt” caper, I would say explain Exodus 21:7-11 then. “When a Man sells his daughter as a slave, she is not to be freed after six years, as a man would be.” Aside from this being a dramatic reason why no females should buy into this rubbish, as there is a clear bias against women, If a believer says, well that’s because the parents owe money, is there any DECENT person on this planet who would believe that children should be used as collateral for any reason? I just had a crazy woman telling me that slavery and beatings were common in that era. They say their god is flawless, all knowing, and omnipotent. If he really deserved that title, he should not have condoned such barbaric practices, because anyone that intelligent should have known all that was wrong regardless of what era people were living in. They love throwing around the word “omnipotent” without knowing what it really means. It signifies that such a god should be aware of what morality means both back then and how we live today. I hope Matt gets to read this comment about selling a daughter, as he may find it useful to short-circuit their bullshit even quicker.

Yeah and in the same way that GOD "hardened the heart of Pharaoh" (Who knows which one because the bible doesn't say?) Then so too could God soften the hearts of those who would wish to own slaves or they could've been given the knowledge which was apparently already in everyone because "GOD is the arbiter of objective moral values". How do theists get this wrong all the time? What's the mystery?

@@markcostello5120 . Yes, that is to do with what I said about being omnipotent. A definition of that that I read means someone who can LITERALLY do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING, including the ability to draw a square circle. NOTHING but nothing he can’t do. So for example, when Adam and Eve stuffed up, he could have zapped them, including the devil and started again. Otherwise he could have reprogrammed the bad people he wiped out with the flood. Oh no, they will say he couldn’t do that. Well guess what? Is that not exactly what he is supposed to have done, by reprogramming people to speak different languages when they built their awful god challenging tower? That’s an example of what they say he can do when it suits them, but he cannot do something similar when they want to perpetuate their myth. Of course they will use the “free will” excuse, but if he created or reprogrammed their brains to act decently, they could still be given free will after that. It pains me to write all this, as I feel like a two-year-old, because I’m writing about something that is the greatest load of garbage of all time.

This was likely the best conversation I have witnessed on the Atheist experience (at least dealing with the issue of slavery). Even though Matt has been through these conversations countless times, he executed calm staitfarward conversation kindly holding the callers feet to the fire. In the end, the caller acknowledged his errors - which might not had happened if a backfire effect had happened. The calm, kind, and patient approach from both the hosts gave room for the caller to not feel threatened by acknowledging his error(s). This may not always be the case with other calls, but it was refreshing to witness this conversation. It gives me hope that good healthy conversations are not only possible, but can happen when both caller and hosts can keep conversation kind and honest. (Note: Matt did say he would offer a retraction to anything he said in error, that can be demonstrated to be actually in error. That is what honesty looks and sounds like!) Thanks Matt and Paul and the caller for this one!!!

This caller highlighted a very sad state of affairs. After conceding that Matt wasn't wrong regarding Exodus 21 and slavery, the callers instant reaction was that to start defending what The Bible said and tried to justify owning slaves. The flipping of sides was quite interesting. It went from, you're wrong the bible doesn't say that you can have slaves; Matt proves The Bible says that; caller goes to, well you can own cats. I could be wrong but the argument of 'Well you can own cats' sounds a lot like trying to say, well if we can own cats, why can't we own people. I don't believe that this is the callers beliefs and it's more a reflection of how deep the indoctranation goes, that they would instantly start to defend a book, despite seeming to originally disagree with it's interpretation. Sounds a lot like no matter what side of the fence an Atheist is on, a Thiest will do or say what ever to put themselves on the other side of that fence, rather than questioning their own belief system.

Top Ten List Top Ten Signs You’re a Fundamentalist Christian 10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours. 9 - You feel insulted and “dehumanized” when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt. 8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God. 7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the “atrocities” attributed to Allah, but you don’t even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in “Exodus” and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in “Joshua” including women, children, and trees! 6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky. 5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old. 4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs - though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most “tolerant” and “loving.” 3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in “tongues” may be all the evidence you need to “prove” Christianity. 2 - You define 0.01% as a “high success rate” when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God. 1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

I do laugh at and really pity callers like Marius here - they always try so hard to defend something that they deep-down know is wrong and indefensible. They know that if they concede that they are wrong then they will have to question their whole lives, and they will see that they have followed nonsense

You can not own a cat. A cat owns you. But on a serious note, a good point to make this caller understand the difference between owning a human slave and owning a cat is: My cat is free to leave, whenever she wants. She has a catdoor and can walk in and out 24/7 and she does. I give her food, but she can hunt her own food and she does. I do not give her commands and i surley would not beat her to death if she does not follow my orders. If she leaves today and never comes back then thats the way it is. She is not a slave.

Yup. Most of the cats I have shared my life with, have actually managed to train me quite well. I know when they are demanding comfort, or food. They told me where they wanted to sleep and in some cases, when they permitted me to sleep.

My cat comes and goes as it pleases. I open the door to let him out and to let him in. I feed him. I take him to the vet when he's sick. I never force the cat to return home, it can run away any time it wants and there's nothing I can do about it. The cat sleeps wherever it wants. So who owns who? Do I OWN the cat or does the cat OWN me? If you're going to compare biblical slavery with owning a pet then the Bible must say, "feed, house, and care for your slaves and let them come and go as they wish. I don't think I'd mind being a slave under those circumstances.
