SHOW NOTES
Hello all you atheists (and theists) out there! The hosts of today’s Atheist Experience are Matt Dillahunty and Dr. Hector Garcia! Hector is an author, podcaster, and youtuber. Heh has been spending his covid time making a new KZread channel, shout out to Genetically Modified Skeptic.
Our first caller, Jonathan in the UK wants to know how to help his believer wife without challenging her beliefs. Tough request Jonathan. Is the belief of a punishing god damaging to begin with? Be honest, come at with concern and let her know this is you and you are not taking away her beliefs. Reach out to Recovering From Religion.
Shawna in NY asks what to say to people that say consciousness is proof of god. There needs to be more to the argument, a statement is not enough to conclude a god exists. The brain is malleable, it can be altered and fundamentally change the person affected.
Dean in CA argues that wellbeing is not robust enough to base morality on. Dean argues coronavirus harms our wellbeing. We agree but there are forms of wellbeing, like societal wellbeing. In discussions of coronavirus we are always talking about wellbeing, not personal preference.
Brian in CA asks about Pascal’s Mugging, a thought experiment on probability of return on investment and risk versus reward. We would want more evidence to believe someone would return any money given. Way too many factors to consider.
Rick in MI thinks Matt is wrong that slavery is in the bible. Rick agrees with Matt that slavery is outlined in the bible but its immoral to own people. Matt points out the bible advocates for something we agree is immoral.
Ron in FL asks how to combat the argument that his brother needs to power through mental health problems. You can research barriers to mental health and help direct him. It’s not a failing on his part and one can’t necessarily pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
Mark in NM asks if atheism creates a contentious point for people arguing new theological ideas. Atheism is merely a response to a claim. We are unsure of what you are asking.
Nathan in LA feels people are agnostic because we don’t know where people came from and feels there has to be a force controlling evolution. Look at the trees… Abiogenesis deals with where life came from, not evolution. No creator required.
Michael in AZ thinks god is a paradox. A paradox implies that something doesn’t exist, a god can’t both exist and not.
Last caller, Vernaz in the UK asks why does god have to be connected to religion and feels god has nothing to do with religion. Some religions don't have a god belief. Email tv@atheist-community.org, we would love to hear more.
Thanks for tuning in, we are so glad you joined us today. You can find more from Hector at www.hector-garcia.com. Stay safe and continue wearing masks out there.

Sure they do. 2nd Thessalonians 2 describes what happens when the police are removed. The man of sin the lawless ones are revealed. They are the ones who will be destroyed. They're called the children of destruction or The offspring of the destruction. So when cops go and atheists (who are anarchists) begin looting killing and doing anything they care too because they don't follow the ten commandments they will die. The ten commandments constantly plays a very important role because we will all be brought back to life into incorruptible bodies that cannot die and then you will be judged by the Catholic saints. And there's a nice warm fire waiting for those who they deem evil or unfit for freedom. Where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.

This is how I would’ve sounded, because I knew the Bible said something HORRIFIC that conflicts with what I know to be morally correct. When presented head on with this, I think I would’ve (and I’m only 3 mins in when I write this, so it may need a revision) tried to make it seem like there’s no way Jesus told ME to do that. No way, that’s impossible! I’m not worshipping a guy like THAT! I dunno, it feels familiar to me. A similar type of mental block that I could’ve easily hit in a conversation like this. But I’ll finish the video and see if I change my mind. Edit: So after watching the whole thing, I can’t say this was like looking at my past self. Parts were familiar, but not all of it.

I disagree with this on a basic level. Yes, you may technically be picking an evil action, but if the choice comes down to A: punch a misguided but innocent person in the face or B: allow a nuclear explosion to occur in the heart of a populated city, it is not evil to choose A. That said, this dichotomy doesn't apply in this situation. If we're talking about a supposedly powerful god, then instead of writing some rules which slightly limited slavery he could, off the top of my head, Order slavery to be abolished. reveal himself to more than one tiny group of people and tell the whole world (or even just a large part of it) that slavery is evil. Magically pick up all of the slaves and transport them to an uninhabited continent he made specifically for this purpose. Create a spell where any time someone tries to enslave another person, the ropes will untie, the brands will heal, the chains will fall off, and the doors holding them will unlock.

The entirety of Christianity's basically "God has the biggest stick in the universe so his side is the right side, you either obey him or you burn." Makes perfect sense when you consider that before he usurped the "only and true god" status, Yahweh was a minor Canaanite war god. It's consummately unwise to base a morality system around a deity whose authority lies in genociding, enslaving, and rapping the opposition, but here we are.

Clearly it's not. Clearly they're using some standard other than "because the bible says so" when they choose to believe one passage is literal and another is metaphor. Clearly the fact that there are thousands of distinct sects of Christianity, each believing different things, says that this isn't an objective standard. For one, it's untrue that it took the bible to treat slaves as not just disposable property. People take awhile to reach adulthood, disposing of them willy-nilly would be stupid. It's like Sam Harris said (paraphrasing) - we're just wasting time with these types of arguments. I have yet to hear anything from the religious side that even approaches convincing as to why anyone should have faith in their particular religion. I would sincerely like to thank The Atheist Experience for taking a lot of these foolish arguments head on and dispelling them as rationally and calmly as possible, but also just for simply trying to make people think. The antidote to racism is exposure, just as the antidote to blind faith is thoughtful examination. Edit: typo

So if you believe any part of the Bible is inaccurate, or metaphorical without it being explicitly referred to as such, why would you believe a single word in it? What's stopping the idea of God from being a lie or being a metaphor? What is keeping you from adopting the pieces of Christianity that you do like and discarding the rest? Why do you cling so tightly to a God that lies or to a book that is full of lies? I suppose a part of it could be if you're raised in the religion, and it's literally the only truth you've ever known, and you start getting contradictory information, you start morphing your beliefs around the contradictions. But still, in perpetuating the religion you're forcing harmful ideas into the public conscious. Christianity doesn't just stop at Jesus telling us to love our neighbor. There's 62 other books in there, all of which show that God is cruel and will punish you for the most minor infractions. There is no lesser sin with God. Eating a shrimp carries the same punishment as genocide. What finally got me to drop the faith was realizing I was attracted to my trans friend, and coming to grips with the fact that my beliefs hurt her. I wish that more Christians who were doubting their faith would realize how many people they're harming with their beliefs, and finally make the plunge and drop the faith, especially if they already think parts of the book are bullshit.

Endorses something that is immoral but isn't immoral. How can anybody possibly even attempt to maintain that the property of immorality with respect to an issue is not inherited through endorsement?

Whatever "good" might come from putting people into slavery has other options that accomplish the same level of positive outcome at the metric of making a person your property WITHOUT making that person your property.

God recognized that some people lie, but he wanted his worshippers to know that lying is bad, so he issued a commandment. Thou shalt not bear false witness. And he recognized that some people steal, but he wanted his worshippers to know that stealing is bad, so he issued a commandment. Thou shalt not steal. And he recognized that some people covet what other people have, but he wanted his worshippers to know that coveting is bad, so he issued a commandment. Thou shalt not covet. And he recognized that some people want to own slaves, but he said, “Okay, fine. Whatever.” And put out a whole series of rules for purchasing, owning, beating, and selling slaves. Somehow, failing to honor your parents and creating graven images are serious enough matters that God absolutely put the hammer down. He found time to issue extensive dietary restrictions, strict rules for planting crops, and prohibitions against wearing fabrics made from different types of threads. But owning, beating, and selling other humans is so trivial that he just laid out some guidelines on how to do it properly.

The Bible advocates rules for owning a slave when it should be advocating that owning another human is not okay! Never brought up when you were a kid for some reason.
