WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

You guys nailed it about how we formulate viewpoints and feelings etc. I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland and I was taught to view Catholics as my enemies from a very early age. I was surrounded by Christian fundamentalist preaching and I absorbed a deeply bigoted version of Christianity. I have been an atheist for about ten years now and even at the age of sixty, I still find that bigotry causing me problems. It stays with me, despite my non belief; however I am at least aware of it and I am trying to extinguish it completely. Thank you for your show. It's really enlightening to me and keeps me moving forward in life.

Greetings from Dublin. I was reared Catholic and my god father was from St James's Park of the falls. I spent a lot of time in Belfast as a child , grew up watching the ridiculous behaviour and beliefs on both sides of the divide. I became an atheist 46 years ago at the age of 15 having questioned religion for 4 to 5 years before that. Religion is nothing but mind poision

I am/was a Southern Baptist and was also taught that Catholics are literally working with Satan to destroy the world. And I went to a Baptist school so it was an everyday thing being reinforced. Not only in the classes but we had Wednesday chapel at school with K-12th grade where we were told it’s our obligation to “fight against the satanic Catholic Church” and that until the government outlaws Catholicism, makes Southern Baptist Protestantism the official Christian religion, and enforces that on everyone “we can never know peace or be truly free”. On top of a bunch of other extremist views like the earth can’t be older than 10,000 years, men have one less rib and women have an extra, every nation knows that the Bible is the one true religion, non-believers should be put in jail, a long list of anti-christs, that “we” deserve to control the Middle East because it’s gods will and that’s what all the wars are for, that said Muslims in the Middle East deserve to be killed. Even the children because they may have some resentment over having their homes obliterated and may decide they don’t want to be Christians. One of the scariest things was that Jesus can’t come back to rule in peace until “every knee is bent, every head bowed, and every thought goes to god” and that we have to “do away with” people who disagree because they’re an “active threat to our survival”.

@@DontRespectTheUS They sure teach some shit in religious schools. I finished school at the age of 15 in Dublin Ireland. I was kicked out because priests ran the school and taught in it and I said I did not believe in god. Other guys in my class did not believe or had doubts but kept quite so their dishonesty was rewarded by letting them finish school. I went into construction and prospered, however now at the age of 61 I'm finding the work hard. I might go to college as a mature student and do architecture as I like to work. Who knows what would have happened in my life if I went on to finish school. Religion is mind poison and brain washing and the cause of more wars , terrorism and strife through out the world . Until every church , temple , synagogue and mosque have been demolished there will never be peace in the world.

The Exodus happened sometime during the 18th/early 19th dynasty (i.e. c.1550BC and c.1230BC) depending on which biblical chronology is used. Karl Butzer (1970s) estimated the population of Egypt around 1250BC using two methodologies to be between 2.9 and 3.5 million people. The methods he used were 1) to take the estimated cultivatable area of Egypt at that time and multiple the resulting number by the estimated carrying capacity of that land and 2) to take the estimated occupied area and multiply this by the estimated population density. Barry Kemp (1983) used a similar method to 2 (above) to derive his estimate of 4 to 5 million people. Using slave estimates from Roman Egypt and combining them with Butzer's population estimates, John Madden has estimated that the number of slaves in Egypt c.1250BC to be 200 to 250 thousand people. Maskell (2002) determined that the number of people under the age of 20 was approximately 42%. According to the book of Exodus, God commanded Moses to lead the Israelites away from the fertile Land of Goshen and to conquer, without killing anyone (because God was soon to forbid this), the already occupied Land of Canaan. Exodus states that the Israelites numbered 600 thousand men. The book of Numbers is more specific stating 603,550 males older than 20. Assuming a like number of women and grossing up for the accompanying children, we get an estimated Israelite population of 2,081,207 people [(603550 × 2)/58%]. There is no evidence in the Egyptian records to suggest that Egypt suddenly lost 40 - 50% of its population around this time, nor is there any evidence that the scrublands of the Sinai desert could support this number of people for even one year, let alone 40! The total size of the Egyptian army during the New Kingdom has been estimated at 40 thousand men. These were arranged in four divisions stationed in different parts of Egypt. If Pharaoh's army had pursued the escaping Israelites it is unlikely that they would have faced more than 20 thousand men. The Israelites outnumbered the Egyptians by 30:1, if Exodus is to be believed. Why did they not just take the Land of Goshen? Also, the Land of Canaan throughout this period was under the hegemony of Egypt. So the escaping Israelites were fleeing from Egypt to Egypt controlled Canaan. A pointless exercise if ever there was one. The story of the Exodus, as written, not only didn't happen but it couldn't possibly have happened.

If someone during the time of Jesus wanted to convince people that they are the Messiah, they would have looked at what was prophesized and try to convince people that they're meeting what was prophesized. The fact that what's written the new testament was written to be "congruent" with a pre-existing text doesn't provide a proof that the prophesies were miraculously met.

The Bible is a collection of stories that were edited and retold and then rewritten over extended periods of time in attempts to increase the interest in those stories. For example, some re-tellers and later the writers who documented the verbal versions of the stories thought it was more interesting to have the hero do supernatural stuff, like walk on water, instead of simply strolling along a sandy beach. The miracles never actually happened as written, but they made for more interesting stories.

I still remember this story from when I was a child in 1960. Wynken, Blynken, and Nod Eugene Field - 1850-1895 Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night Sailed off in a wooden shoe,- Sailed on a river of crystal light Into a sea of dew. "Where are you going, and what do you wish?" The old moon asked the three. "We have come to fish for the herring-fish That live in this beautiful sea; Nets of silver and gold have we," Said Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. The old moon laughed and sang a song, As they rocked in the wooden shoe; And the wind that sped them all night long Ruffled the waves of dew; The little stars were the herring-fish That lived in the beautiful sea. "Now cast your nets wherever you wish,- Never afraid are we!" So cried the stars to the fishermen three, Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. All night long their nets they threw To the stars in the twinkling foam,- Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe, Bringing the fishermen home: 'Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed As if it could not be; And some folk thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed Of sailing that beautiful sea; But I shall name you the fishermen three: Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes, And Nod is a little head, And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies Is a wee one's trundle-bed; So shut your eyes while Mother sings Of wonderful sights that be, And you shall see the beautiful things As you rock in the misty sea Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:- Wynken, Blynken, And Nod.

Mathematical analogy to congruence or consistency: If 0 = 1, then 9 = 10. Not only are the two equations consistent with each, one actually implies the other (such as by adding 9 to each side of the first equation to obtain the second one). But the fact of this consistency does not tell us whether the individual statements are TRUE - which, they are not.

There were many messiahs! They came and went and this is something Christians brush over. The fact that they have attached a name to the term messiah is not in itself out the ordinary. To claim that this is THE messiah requires evidence. How is it all these other "messiahs" were not the true one? Forgotten to history as many of them are. Could it be that this messiah just happened to be the one the Roman Empire adopted?

Show me any example FAITH that solves a problem? When a GOD of action shows up There is no need or room for FAITH. Seems that FAITH becomes the crutch used to help you feel better about nothing special going on.
