my brother buyed yesterday the new bmw 3 model with mpacked, the harman sound system is a fking monster. We listened to hip hop, edm, Pop and generally music with bass, the quality is on an other level... Sry for my grammatics im from switzerland

Nice to see they've included an actual equalizer, which seems to be absent in almost every other modern car.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the great review, nicely done and i really appreciated the different tracks you played, they really highlight the good qualities and the bad. We've just traded up to the new 3 series from the 2015, both with the HK upgrade. On the old car, the bass speakers under the front seat were way better (prominent) - we're struggling to get this new system setup as well as the old one too. Would you recommend changing out the bass speakers in the new car to get that real bass boost?

Thank you for covering something which no one else is, and doing it well. This is actually a big deal for me in choosing my next car.

About time they did this ... practically all of my previous cars I have ended up installing an aftermarket head unit just for similar capabilities and sound. Used to love my Alpine headunits.

I currently have the S-Alpine system installed in my car. But I’m driving an old beater lol It rattles too much. I’m privileged to have driven a variety of cars even pretty high end ones. I’m hoping one day I can buy a Tesla Model S. I’d love to have the Harmon Kardon system but also combine it with the dual Sub bass system I currently have in my car right now. That’s be awesome!

Nice review! What to do if my iPod does not shuffle the songs but keeps playing the same song repeatedly, even if set under "Titles". The shuffle icon is checked on both the actual system and the iPod. Any suggestions about how to correct this? Thank you.

The default sound signature is super flat and perhaps more of an audiophile-suited profile. What’s amazing about the Harman/Kardon system is how well it responds to EQ. You could easily fix the lack of bass, and end up with an incredibly strong bass that doesn’t overpower the rest of the system.

yeah but it will never have very good bass that's super well controlled because it has no subwoofer, and is just 460 watts. The Genesis g70 360 horsepower v6tt w/ its standard lexicon sound system is much superior to this and a cheaper vehicle, better interior too

@@roboticvenom1935 ok, bmw doesnt need anywhere near that horsepower figure to out perform the genesis, bmw, audi and benz are simply superior to other cars in there leagues. a bmw bowers and wilkins in the 5 series is way better than the lexicon sound system, same with burmester in the e class and also the bang n olufsen in the a6/7

It is the same as in the F30 / F31 series.It is real good for average music listeners. However there is always room for improvement. It is absolutley woth the money and gives you the chance for improvement as you have all the slots wirings and spaces.

Great job, I’m awaiting the delivery of my 2023 320i M Sport pro with the H&K sound system. It was a must because I currently have a Jaguar XF with the 825 Watt, 17 speaker (that extra speaker being a subwoofer under the floor in the back) Meridian sound system so there was no way I could get a new car without a decent sound system after that. So it sounds like I will loose that base experience, but you can’t win them all.

What is the best eq settings for this HK system?

Finally! Someone did it! It seems that I am not the only one! Car Audio is as important as the engine in my view! ;) I definitely don't think this is a 5.. It's more like a 7-8/10. I've never seen or owned a sound system that sounded perfect from the factory settings ;) and this one doesn't either. but with 5 minutes of tweaking - like one time ever - the quality is so much better! Then again, I know audio quality is subjective ^_^ Again awesome review!

I am a bit curious, you have tested the harman kardon soundsystem in the 840i and there it got a better score from you. According to the bmw website they are both the same systems (464 Watts, 16 spekaers etc.). I got a BMW G21 (3 Series Touring) recently with the harman kardon soundsystem and compared to my old E91 LCI 3 Series, also with Harman Kardon soundsystem, its not that good anymore. So i am bit dissapointed with the system, just like you were. Its exactly like you said, no bass(-guitar), no low ends...even if you get to high volume, the sound just feels a little bit "empty".

Yeahhh, to be honest, some of the early sound tests were a little too nice on the ratings. I'm trying to be more center weighted now. But also, different cars can have a completely different sound than others with similar systems. In fact, we just had an RC F and an NX300h from Lexus, both with 835-watt Mark Levinson systems, and the RC was much better. Very surprising. But also an interesting point to keep in mind while shopping.

You are absolutely right. I am quite disappointed with this HK crap. Savagegeese has also mentioned the poor quality of the HK sound used in the USD 100k X5.

Can someone please post their equalizer settings? I find the bass lacking as usual with the HK stereo. It usually improves over time with break in. Right now I have bass turned up very high to 8 with treble at 2. Equalizer left alone in V shape with only adjustment of the 200hz band to -1 (seems to clean up any muddy bass sound). But other than that I haven't had a chance to play with the equalizer settings as of yet.

What's the stock one ? Still Hartman Kardon just less speakers

Good video! Sounds great. The song itself has too much compression that causes the snare to drop everything else around it for moment of what sounds like attenuation. A better test, if it was possible to do it without getting demonetized, would be a more dynamic jazz song by Pat Metheny where high quality instrumentation can show off the “dust” during the moments of silence. Thanks for putting in such a great effort to share your experience. HK is an excellent sound system to say the least!

Greeting from the weed Nun. I have two options, a keep SRT or a 2021 m550i. I went to a dealership in Manhattan the other day and decided to hear the bowers and Wilkins... and it’s insane it’s almost as if you’re in a theatre you hear everything.

Great video and I totally agree - have just bought at new 430i with HK "upgrade" and also have real lack of base and also the tendency for it to sound very front weighted. I've owned 4 BMWs all with HK upgrade and none had this lack of depth. Disappointing.

Inwas test driving a 2017 infinity q50 with the Bose and it sounded freaking INCREDIBLE!! Does anyone know how it compares th the HK in this m340!!? The Bose sounded so damn good!!

I’ve made a decision to purchase this car, so comparison to other cars don’t really interest me that much, unlike the comparison of the base bmw g20 audio with this h/k system. Is the upgrade worth the $2k sticker price, in your opinion?

While we haven't had a chance to test the base system in the 3-series, we have tested other BMWs with their base systems, and the HK is definitely worth the money if you care about good audio.

So if you would adjust the settings accordingly (low end), would it be comparable to the B&W systems in Volvo cars? So in other words, is it possible to fix the lack of low end through the settings?

Somewhat, but not completely. The Volvo systems are very powerful, have many channels, and are well mixed.

Good review. I experienced exactly the same. Switched from a BMW 4 Series (bought in 2017) to a new M340i and was very disappointed. The bass is so much weaker. They really did a step backwards

Had to upgrade my f30 to a g20 after an unfortunate accident. I was disappointed with the bass as well and the f30 wasn’t even HK

I love the sytem, you have to know how to handle with the equalizer. 8/10

Thank you! I typically mention near the end what settings I use if the system greatly benefits from a specific adjustment. However, most of the time different songs require different tweaks. If there's ever a very good setting, I'll try to mention it!

How do I know if a 2020 m340i has HK sound system?

Will you be testing out the the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system in the X7 ? I think you’ve already tested one in another car. What did you think?

Tested it in the M8, wasn't very impressed, although I'd be willing to bet the X7's system is better due to the shape and nature of the vehicle. We'll likely test one by the end of the year! - Charlie

I don't think so. Only B&W, which was pretty good

My brother is 19 and he has a bmw 330i 2018 with standard speakers it sounds OK I give it a 6.4/10 and my mom has a BMW X6 50i with Harman Kardon speaker and there is quite a big difference between bass on both

@@flandrescarlet486 I once heard b&o used in rs3 and it is better than HK in M2 and X5. In fact Dynaudio used in Golf R is superior to HK in BMW.

Thanks! We haven't had much seat time in the A4 or C-class, so it's tough to give a fair comparison. However, I am familiar with the M3, and I would put its system slightly above the M340i. Stay tuned, because we should get the other two cars over the next year!

Audi’s B&O is far superior to this HK soeakers crap. Even VW’s Dynaudio is way better than this HK one. Yes I used to own a VW, I had the M2C and I now own an X5 G05 M50i.

I test drove a 2021 M340i and a 2021 Audi S5. The S5 sounded much better. The BMW's HK system was really lacking from what I was expecting.

Perhaps I want to make a large adjustment quickly, or maybe I only have one hand on the wheel and it's the wrong side.

The H-K Surround Sound in my Tanzanite Blue 2020 (U.K. spec) M340i is nowhere near as good as the H-K system I had in my previous 2018 440i Coupe. It sounds more hollow and boomy whilst also being less powerful.

The Harman Kardon system in my previous 330e f30 sounded much better then in my current M340i G21 (600 watts vs 464 watts). BMW really disapointed me with this downgrade. I’m looking for an upgrade now to get the sound to the level of my previous f30

the new one is lame, try another brand like Mercedes, volvo, Gensesis, or Lexus who all have way better stereos. Wait for Genesis to re-design the g70(coming relatively soon) and that'll be a monster.

Having driven one of these I can confirm the HK sound system has a high bias, not great in the mids and good in the sub/bass. It's easy to overdo bass, this system has two 8-inch sub drivers (under front seats) which I think were reasonably well EQ'ed in. The mids were lacking, which you can hear in this video - try listening out for the vocals in one of the demo tracks.

it's wild how much they downgraded the audio system in the 3/4 Series over the years, in the e9x's HK had two subwoofers, and the Individual sound system had more than a 1000W and 21 speakers, even in the Fxx models' HK had a subwoofer afaik although it was already not as full sounding as the predecessor

yeah this shit sucks, the kia sould sound system is on par(No I'm not joking, it has 200 more watts of power and a subwoofer, the quality is similar when it's not far behind). The much cheaper Genesis lexicon audio is much better, as well as volvo, Mercedes, and lexus esp

Harman Kardon always surprising, but better sound quality than Mark Levinson from the Lexus line I haven't heard yet.

Volvo has the best systems across its lineup. Mercedes is also very good. Mazda is near the top for more adorable brands. We're coming out with a tier list for sound systems later this week

Keep in mind he’s running this test on factory setting. In the start of the video he shows a lot of ways to customize the sound, including bass. There is even a highly accurate and advanced equalizer. Trust me, even their standard systems have plenty of bass.

BMWs have always had lackluster audio systems when compared to similarly priced (and much cheaper) autos. Never understood why. They are so bad, in fact, there are a couple companies that specialize in aftermarket BMW audio systems.

Harmon kardon don’t have the deep rumbling base im not a fan bmw should use bose or b&a

just saying..i do hear your voice trough the micro you use to show us this soundsystem....and i am not impressed by how your voice comes trough. so how do i judge this? if you want to do a sound test online and use a mid price lvl micro (or one that sounds like one)...this comes with some amount of salt with me

This is the annoying part of buying a car. I LOVE Lexus sound system but it doesn't have the same sportiness, the bmw drives amazing but the sound is meh, audi has trash reliability...
