    @@michaelsvk1355 The Golf is a good car because it's such a good blend of practicality and performance but the BMW is even better because it sacrificed a little bit of practicality for a lot more driving enjoyment. Big engine, loads more power, rear wheel drive, good manual and great auto available. Top spec ones are baby luxury cars. They are fantastic for people that can't justify a full on two seater sports car but also don't really need the rear seats or boot space too often.

    @@niallcorcoran4437 Well then you'd be wrong. The Mk 7 Golf R is boring in truth, front biased all wheel drive, 2 litre 4 cylinder engine that sounds mediocre. It's fast, but in a way that elicits little excitement. The BMW on the other hand is more unique for hot hatchbacks. Firstly it has a rev happy three litre straight six driving the rear wheels as standard, and an Xdrive option with rear biased four wheel drive. In other words, it'll slide about unlike the Golf with a purity of balance the Golf does not possess. Both manual and a superb (ZF8) auto slush box auto are available. It has more power stock than a mk7 Golf R (322bhp for the facelift versus 306 for the facelift R), more torque (332lb/ft plays 280) and still very tuneable. 400 horsepower was easy. In 2016 the N55 engine was replaced by the same configuration B58, which had even more power (335bhp with 369lb/ft) and was even more tunable and stronger, having a closed deck. This was dubbed the M140i. A remap equivalent of about $750 with no hardware changes on an M140i is approx 415 horsepower. With minor bolt ons costing perhaps $2000 it is 450 horsepower.

    This head-to-head track test reveals exactly why Clarkson (along with his crew behind the camera) are so good at making a car review entertaining. He could just tell us that the Beamer has less space in the boot and barely any leg room in the back seat, but he doesn't. Instead, he spends more than a minute (4:38 - 5:54) messing about with a nuclear warhead and sawing a leg off of a mannequin. Sometimes he staggers even himself with his genius.

    The Clio V6 is very very good (driven one) but the one thing it's bad at is storing stuff in the rear, which is what hatchbacks are supposed to be good at, also it doesn't have rear seats... Because they put the engine there. 130i M sport is also very very good simply because it is a FR RWD (Front mounted engine, Rear Wheel Drive), but it's more of a 5-door compact-wagon'ish in size, looks and function. Yes there is the BMW M140i PE and it is a hot hatch but 1) Only a handful of the M140i PE's were ever made, very few people (60, to my recollect) ever get to own one (and thats assuming none of them have been crashed/scrapped so far), and 2) Too pricey. The (affordable) RWD hot hatchback Jeremy is referring to is the 1988-1994 Nissan 200SX (I've driven a tuned example and yes it was bonkers) and even with inflation considered it was way cheaper than any of the aforementioned modern equivalent alternatives, it's way lighter, way less power (when stock, not so much when you remove a bling and adjust a blong) so it's cheaper to insure. And it's a cult car with a massive following which the NPC-like (again, fast AF, but thats all they got) BMW and Golf wont have, and while yes, the Clio V6 is legendary, look at the prices, it's what we call unattainable (25k for an almost decently good one) so these cars (minus the Clio) will be... forgotten. Excluding the Clio V6, bring one of these new BMW's or Golf's to a car meet and everyone goes -.- Bring a Golf R32, or Nissan 200SX or Golf MK.I Rabbit or MK.2 Synchro (w/16v swap) or BMW 1602/1802/2002 or Clio V6 (yes I said we'd exclude it but you'd defend it to the death anyway so I might as well give an inch now than a mile later) to a car meet and everyone does that whole gushing rainbow meme thing.

    ToreDL87 I don’t know how you can call the bmw not a hatch. The rear door is a hatch so it has a hatch on the back. Therefore it’s a hatch back. Also you can pick them up for around £5k which is very affordable indeed

  • @Janshevik

    @Janshevik

    He said hatchback and Clio V6 is closer to classic sports car as it is mid engine with only 2 seats, while BMW 1 is an ordinary car that you can use for everyday life. And only like 3000 of Clio V6 were made, which makes them less affordable even than Alpine lol

  • @ToreDL87

    @@lbnewell23 Not a hatch because the sheer size of that car dictates otherwise, just look at that thing, I revise my statement from calling it a wagon to calling it a SUV, too heavy, too long and too wide, and dare I say, too powerful, completely useless around the bends & corners on narrow roads, it has a hatch in the back but it's not a hot hatchback, they're meant to be zippy and toss-able and revving in the corners, not boating around the bends PRAYING to the gods there wont be oncoming traffic! The 140i PE fits the bill size-wise, but too few were ever made and commands prices more than 5k, and there's the weight to take into consideration, and way too much engine. The Clio is really good,(if not a bit too little contact with the front wheels, especially at higher speeds, not that I ever broke the speed limit with it ehrm ehrm ehrm ehrm) but too few were ever made, and that rear mounted engine makes it useless for exactly what it's meant to do, they should have gone F/R with it, and the price.. In terms of how quick it picked up value as a cult car, after it went out of production, it beats even the JZA80 Supra, again, great car, IMO it should be a government mandate that EVERYONE have one at least once in their life, I can't praise it enough, BUT, it doesnt fullfill it's supposed role, it looks like a hot hatchback but you cant toss stuff in the rear boot (because it doesnt have one) and go for a spirited drive. Again, Golf R32, Nissan 200SX, Golf MK.1/2 are absolute UNITS. Heck, I own one and don't like bragging about my sh*t, so wasn't going to say it, but what about the 3dr "AE86" Toyota Corolla GT 1983-1987? over 350000 were made and enough are left that the average person can get one, it's got the 200SX beat by how many knows about it, it's RWD, has Limited Slip 1.6 Twin Cam so not enough to get killed but enough to have fun.. and the intake SOUND!! And in terms of aftermarket parts support/community/helpfulness etc over all, the BMW community is put entirely to SHAME (and I own a BMW and I know how to google parts, go to forums, find dedicated facebook groups etc), heck it wasnt until recently someone (RacingDiffs) came up with a Limited Slip for the regular 188mm E46 diffs, and I can't praise them enough, but why did BMW not offer Limited Slip diff for the regular E46??? WHY??? Arguably the most easily attainable late 90's/early 2000's RWD chassis today and they botched it up! Meanwhile, the "crappy" Corolla & 200SX has always had like pff 10 different brands that offers fully adjustable Limited Slip diffs to choose from, and thats assuming you manage to blow up the diff it has (which is easily rebuildable), and that's before we get into engines, transmissions (there are 3 different companies that offers dogbox racing transmissions, 4 different companies that offers custom transmission gear sets) and final gears, not to mention the rear axle swap kits that are available. Most hot hatchbacks ever made were absolute legends and units in their time, heck, new types of motorsports and new types of classes in motorsports were created with them, everyone could get one when they were made, they are collectable as heck, and still completely attainable for the average person, without getting into debt, given motivation and application of simple economics by laying off useless subscriptions, stop adding to your flat cap collection+changing flatphone every second and stuff like that.

    I agree. The X-Drive M135i and Golf R in these awful conditions would have made for a brilliant comparison. I'm a big fan of the M135i. I've been a passenger and driven one in Germany. The engine is simply majestic. The best way I can describe it that it's like a high-performance Diesel and a naturally aspirated, six cylinder petrol engine all in one. Anyone who owns one, will understand what I'm saying. Put a BMW LSD there and you've got a baby M car. Great car.

There is, however, a mouse pointer in the image just between the "i" and the "e" in the "Efficient Dynamics" portion. 3:17 shows that the DSC was indeed switched off while he was driving at high speed. DSC switched off while doing a high speed run on an extremely wet track. There's a word for that. Nice try, Jezza and Top Gear.

    I went from this very GTI with the performance pack to the LCI M135i. 2 different beasts. The golf always felt safe and planted, very difficult to unsettle it when gunning, and it felt plenty fast enough. The m135i however is significantly faster, a totally different beast. It has so much power going through the rear wheels you can get a little squigly in a straight line. It's far more exciting and an astronomical degree more involved to drive; not for the faint hearted. If you want a drivers car with more power than you'll ever need for a public road - m135i (old 6 pot, not so much modern 4 pot). If you want a safe A to Ber with reasonable fuel economy that's also quick - golf all day.

    Because his tires were spinning so quick they had no more grip on the road and the car started 'floating' over the water. And then your car starts spinning and you have absolutely no control left, you could see it as ice skating.

    Oh so it was aquaplaning pretty much? Maybe if he had some thicker, wider tyres that wouldn't have happened? Or was it just because of RWD?

  • @HerraTohtori

    @HerraTohtori

    It seemed like the BMW entered aquaplaning conditions earlier than the VW. Most likely because it was simply traveling faster, but there could also be other factors in play. It could also be that the BMW just happened to hit a puddle that the VW didn't. Maybe the BMW simply had inferior tyres with less water-clearing capability. Maybe the BMW had tyres with wider contact patch, making it more susceptible to aquaplaning. The crux of the matter is that the BMW was traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions and the amount of water on the runway, ended up aquaplaning and with no control, while the VW did not.

    Strider Sky The 1 series might have a little less space, but that doesn't mean it's not practical. The M135i is based on a regular 1-series which is a hatchback after all. And I bet you with the adaptive suspension it's more comfortable to drive than the Golf. It's a poor man hot hatch? Haha, you make no sense. What's a rich man hot hatch then, a Ferrari FF? If you want a fun car that is most certainly practical in every day life, there is nothing wrong about the M135i. If you want a understeering, slow Golf that pollutes like a train and is powered by a toy engine, go ahead and get the Golf, which is truly the poor mans hot hatch in this comparison.

    I haven't looked at anything from this show in a while. I also suffered two car accidents which caused me a lot of memory loss so this is also like watching it again for the first time for me. God everything was so beautiful during the production of this show. The lighting, the soundtrack, the commentary, the presenters. It's the same men we know on GrandTour but, it's just... different. They seem to focus more on the comedy, not the art. I feel like these men had a huge impact on the way auto manufacturers started to look at their cars, I think their opinions alone might be why we have some of the options we do now. Something about this made me feel a feeling I haven't felt in a long time, and it felt good, it made me feel alive. Now I'm just left with the comedown emptiness of my life and the friends I had during this time in the shows production, they are gone or dead now. I guess life is about experiencing things, emotions, the sensation of living and it's ups and downs. My cars are the only thing that's kept me sane through the madness in this world. God's speed James, Jeremy, Hammond, thank you for reminding me why I was put on this earth.

I don't care about the VW's practicality prowes, the VW's just a little bit more spacious, that's all! The 1er has some 2.1 extra inches of wheelbase, so it's almost as roomy! I also don't care about the VW's ease of insurance! I just want that rear-drive Straight-Six and stand out of the croud, whilst drifting in a Straight-6 soundcloud! Besides, the 1er's the only car to match with the old rear-driven hot hatches!
