Rather prescient of BMW. All new cars sold within the EU will have to be fitted with such software from 2025, I believe.

I tried to watch the new guys on Top Gear and it was brutal. I enjoy Chris doing car reviews but the Interactions between the three are rough. I really miss these guys being on more often...

okay i happened to watch their vid on the VW electric car recently and it was actually pretty good. a lot more cut and dry than the old boys' tomfoolery, but it was a well-made vid.

@@Markcain268 - I've never complained about a penny of the tax I paid, and I have paid a lot. It's what they spend it on that I have an issue with. I want my taxes to go to people who need it and the services the country needs, not to line the pockets of Tory donors. Though I have to be careful what I say, cos I have not lived in the UK for 12 years and where I live now we don't pay a lot in tax and we get a HELL of a lot for what we pay.

As a previous RX8 owner, those half-width suicide doors are actually brilliant and give you the same entry and egress space as a regular door, because you sort of slide into the back seat around the front ones, being that there is no central dividing pillar between the doors.

Always watch these clips , mostly older top gear seasons news on a come down after a night out and it’s the only thing that make’s me feel better

"Amazing" isn't the term i would use. "Awesome" is probably more fitting. Electric cars still aren't practical for anybody that doesn't live in a city. Its just a weather weenie wet dream. They'll never replace ICE vehicles without governments forcing on people. Most people dont want a car that takes hours to refuel only to go 200 miles. That wont even get you from one major city to the next in the Western US. You'd have to stop twice just going from LasVegas to Phoenix and add hours of trip time to charge the stupid thing. Batteries will always suck for range. Its the fault in this fuel source. Give it another decade all the electric cars will be tiny terrible little things nobody wants but thats all that will be available on the market due to government overreach.

It's sad that manufacturers use these skinny tyres to improve driving range, but compromise safety with much lower grip levels

They are a softer compound and have plenty of grip. Read a few reviews - they confirm that handing is good too. I’ve driven one.

Handling is not grip. E-cars are heavier -> less grip. Smaller contact patch on the tyre with the road -> less grip. It's basic car dynamics physics. Yeah and many car reviews nowadays are just ads with more praising than criticism

I am aware of the difference between grip and handling but the two are related. Reviews aren’t always ads, but I did include that it’s based on my own experience. I’m not interested in a debate but I’ll finish with this - weight can increase grip (the R-35 GTR used this to it’s advantage and I believe it was considered in the design) and rubber compounds can compensate for less contact patch; otherwise your argument would mean that a larger contact patch would compensate for harder tyres - and different compounds of tyres in F1 wouldn’t make a difference.

Also, the i3 is one of the lighter BEVs - it’s weight and tyre width are perfectly acceptable on the road, in my 3-days of mixed weather experience, including spirited cornering and braking as I was considering purchasing one.

If it's an autobahn, then it's not outrageous for Europe, as that's only about $10K more than the US models. In many parts of Europe, a base Golf is $45K, with the GTI more like $55-60K, and the Golf R at about $80K due to gas taxes. It's why the Mustang in the united states is like $35K vs $120K in Europe.

@@USUG0 "power is how fast you hit the brick wall, torque is how far you'll push past the wall" so it is Speed (gearing) and Power vs Torque. Also its technically not a 1 speed gearbox it's a Continous Variable Transmission (CVT) there's no clutch at all unlike a single speed gearbox which would still have one. The BMW i3 enjoys no delay from the clutch and instant torque but suffers a low top speed, a heavier weight and running out of power after he's reached about 50 mph due to the CVT gearbox. The Golf enjoys alot of power, a much lighter weight, a performance oriented gearbox with 6 gears on a DCT gearbox so it changes gear the fastest a manual car can possibly but the golf suffers because the power delivery isn't immediate (especially with a turbocharged engine) and he has to actually change gear which means for very small amounts of time it isn't accelerating. But regardless that i3 isn't worth £40'000, £40k for a commuters car?? You could comfortably buy a used Nissan GTR for that money and if you run it a long time it'll be better for the environment than just that BMW's production, the GTR won't force you to drive at 50mph with the radio, air conditioning, Bluetooth etc off because its low of fuel, it doesn't take an hour to fill up and if you drive it politely will do hundreds of miles on a full tank.

It's congestion charge for everyone, but EVs get a pass because it's incentive for people to adopt less polluting vehicles. EVs get a pass in a lot of things and also get paid money on purchase because the oil industry has been getting tax payer money for decades and it's only fair to level the playing field now. It's not that complicated if you let go of your prejudice and actually use your brain, however little you have left.

There are plenty of small EVs nowadays, the problem with SUVs is not an EV problem, it's stupid people thinking they need an SUV.

Would still have a Golf GTI over any electric car. 20 min charging? Driving a computer? Pass.
