120 psi isn’t a dead cylinder , def would check out other options , I’ve had good m52/54 with those numbers. I’d test all the cylinders , if they’re within 15% you’re good

Totally agree with this. You know a dead cylinder when it's crazy off from the rest of them (for the most part) this feels like it's got a problem somewhere else

The engine was also cold, and cold engines give lower compression readings because of looser tolerances. It also doesn't sound like a single cylinder misfire issue, but more like a vacuum leak or a broken maf.

Intake manifold gasket ripped on cylinder 3? 120psi, and 15psi lower than cylinder 2 really shouldn’t cause an issue…

Agreed. I’d do a bit more troubleshooting before you call it dead. I’ve had cylinder failure twice on an M54 and both times compression was in the 60-70psi range.

Proper way to compression test is to warm up to operating temp. Then pull all the plugs. Also pull the fuel pump fuse. Then test each cylinder. Dead cylinder on an m54 is usually WAY lower than that in my experience. Like less than 100psi.

A. Don't trust HF compression testers. B. That small % difference in compression won't cause a dead miss. C. Compression changes between cold, hot, wet, dry. D. Do a leak down test.

Are you using the 3.0L maf and crank position sensor? Some of the sensors like the maf are different between the 2.5 and 3.0

I have a 3.0 with a bad cylinder one - 90psi versus the 155 on all others... and it runs great, its my winter drifter and I beat the crap out of it. Your issue is most likely a vacuum leak, do a smoke test before you pull the engine out!! Also if the engine has a mismatched spark plug, the repair on the threads could easily be janky and leaking compression on the cylinder.

I've heard from 50skid on KZread that harbor freight compression testers can bloat when reading giving an artificially lower compression rating than is normal fyi, it may be that is causing the out of spec compression, but still doesn't look good for the difference in pressure between cylinders

I had a misfire in bank 3, couldn't figure out whats wrong, then i noticed one of the pins connectors of the fuel injector electric rail was misaligned and that was my issue, check all the plastic connectors in the rail that clips in all the injectors.... anddd come to Curacao, we've got a drift show in April, ls swapped 240's good stuff

Junkyard budget ls swap it. I did to my e46 sedan and it's still super fun. I'm on low boost in the low 400s on stock getrag 5 speed. I have a spare ict billet alt and BMW power steering bracket for corvette spacing I can donate to the cause

im no expert but i would remove the valve cover and intake mani & replace all the gaskets clean icv check if headbolts are torqued down or just also do the head its pretty simple on these engines no need to remove the cams just lock em in place with a cam tool its also very cheap to do u can get all the gaskets for like 100-120$ and the cam & vanos tool for like 10-30$ would be awsome to see videos of micah doing that

DIAZ IT IS THE FREAKING DME!!!!! Im an e46 guru & last time i chased a missfire with good compression it ended up being the dme. Another sign could be a suspicious looking but fully working coil. The transistor under the board gets hot and literally melts off. Go with a dme deleted DME or at least check yours for damage.

Should make a video showing spark on cylinder 3, like pulling the plug and putting it close to metal or even a video showing your dme front & back. If that doesn’t fix it then maybe a fuel filter because regulated one’s like to act up in my experience. If you do an ews deleted dme & it doesn’t work still then I’ll be shocked. Also I’m assuming it’s ms.43? Could be a bad wiring harness from coils to dme.

If these overheat just once its screwed the alloy rots the threads on the block all the threads-

its been so long i couldnt remember what all was done when you guys did the swap so i just went back and watched the video, motor sounded good before it started missing on first test drive so i feel like its not low comp? even though 120 isnt good by any means.. im no expert but i just finished doing the 3.0 swap into my e39 and i think you might have a ZSR resistor or other ignition harness issue try swapping the ignition harness from another car on, as long as it has the same ignition coil connectors (theres a triangle type used on later e46 models with a push in style coil) its no problem, could also be the grounding this older style with the square connector runs all the grounds from the coils into a bundle then into the resistor and then it splits and one ground line goes to the DME box and the other is the ground on the valve cover could be a place to start if you have the old 3.0 harness sitting around so you dont have to pull the whole motor also you could try installing BMW standard tools and reading the round diagnostic port it is supposed to have more BMW specific codes/info hopefully this is some help 👍

Buy another e46 engine ir swap it - as someone who spent way to much time and money on one of these

Yo so I just had this issue i had two Cylindera dead so I changed the the vale cover coils and even the coil side harness and I disconnected my fuse for the gas tank and I disconnected my MAF maybe u flooded it give it one more shot man I'm on ms43 tune now its bmw break my wallet 🤑😁🤣🤣
