Bluewater sailing boatlife - saluting the internet Gods and other first world problems - Ep 120

Boat life, saluting the internet Gods - first world sailing problems - Ep 120
We continue our sail up the west coast of Australia, but the further north we go the more spaced out the towns become. No people no internet! Before we head out to the off grid Montebello Islands we need to stop in at Double Island military base gas mine to grab a bit of internet so that we can upload our vlog. With a good easterly blow predicted it gives Declan a chance to pump up a kite and get a bit more kite boarding under his belt.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
Our plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Helpful to a tee, we are! 25 kt is a smallie device compared to some. Developed as a "deterrent" at the time, it`s actually the biggest waste of taxpayer`s money ever devised. Hi Brien, thank you. Maybe one too many sunset shot me thinks but who doesn't like a sunset? Yes Ivan is our man on the drone. It's the first time he has tried it for kiting shots. He doesn't usually like flying the drone in windy conditions. I think he did really well. And Declan is doing great too on the board.

"She doesn't make food anymore!" Poor Ivan. Cooking lessons maybe? Turning around out of that lagoon was probably a good idea considering your guys' talent for finding the shallowest spot in any fairway. Sorry, couldn't resist! What a quandary for Finn. Is he in Auckland or Waikato? This latest lockdown must be playing havoc with his plans for anything. Tried taking the gyb off the furler yesterday. Failed miserably! Couldn't get it to budge, thinking it.s probably jammed at the top of the mast. Bringing in help from Neil, the previous owner who you guys met on the boat apparently off Tiririmatangi Island. This may involve a lifechanging experience for me. Going up the mast!

My advice is for Finn to do what is most important to him, it’s his life so if rowing is his passion then by god do it. Good luck Finn! In American most of the employers really don’t care what is going on in your life. It’s come to work or get fired. Jobs at least in my experience don’t care about us, so don’t worry about them. You can give 100% to a job and they will dump you next week if it suits them.

Sad to see Finn is having issues with his employer - the delay in him getting back to NZ was unfortunate during these crazy times we are living in, but surely not something that can't be worked around. Hopefully a workable compromise can be come to and his employer cuts him a bit of slack to allow him to follow his passion.

  • @wishusknight3009
