Boat life - HAMMERHEAD SHARK at island paradise wants our dinner - Ep 121

Boat life - A hammerhead shark wants our catch of the day -Ep 121
We have sailed to the beautiful, tranquil Montebello Islands where Declan, thanks to ‪@SailingZatara‬, has had a chance to learn to kite board on a foiling board. And he's 'got it' really quickly.
Meanwhile Rob does some hunting and gathering for the family, catches a tasty coral trout but then inadvertently attracts the attention of several sharks to the boat, one of which is a huge hammerhead, who all want a bit of the Mr coral trout too.
Luckily it all ends well and we get the lions share of the fish. Though should we be eating fish in The Montebello's we ask ourselves? You see the British military tested three nuclear bombs here in the 1950's yet it still says don't spend more than an hour at the testing sites, which begs the question how radioactive are the islands? And should we eat that fish?

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
Our plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

Judging by the size of the dorsal fin, I’d say that was an Oceanic Hammerhead! The nasty bastards! Usually, although, my experience is on the northern east coast of Australia. Hammerheads are usually quite docile. I’ve done shark feeds in the Coral Sea, with a large school of Hammerheads nearby on one occasion, they didn’t even come and look....!? We used dogtooth tuna frames, and all sharks seem to especially love those! Any who, Oceanic Hammerheads are bad News to swim with! As for the beans......🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for sharing. 😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺

And the author of that receip, seeing you (luckily for us!😂) still well alive and cruissing rough and quite seas. Well done Finn and Ivan for that skating trick!! And Rob, Rachel, I admire your cold bload. Filming (even with the" hanmade selfie stick"). those hammerhead sharks sooo close!! The music choice was great, Rachel. It must been. Guess Ivan did enjoy that lobster, right? Or not, like that fish? Indeed, Rachel, they want us to be scared but we musn't. Or not too much. As The Beatles say, Life is to short (for fearing, fussing and fighting). But yes, indeed is infuriating how they could bomb such a paradise. The Hammerhead was reacting to the minute electrical fields generated by the metal of the steps and motor of your dingy... Their head is that shape for a reason their eyes and nostrils are out at the ends and the pits in their skin that contain the field sensors are spread over the underside. Rays have similar senses as their shark cousins. At the point they bite a sharks blind so its reacting and biting down on whatevers aroused its curiosty.. even if the waters clear. Think of a hammerhead as a living electric field detector/.packman ...attracted by vibrations and blood at very very low dilutions and over large distances😉. They are also some of the most threatend species in the seas... because of illegal fishing for their fins and sometimes their livers ...which as they lack swim bladders make up to a third of their inner mass. They are vital to the health of the ocean and reef. Being in effect chiefs of quality control and clean up in the marine environment pretty much since the end of the Devonian period. Period.
