Eurasian Blue Tits are master nest builders! This determined mother spent twelve days gathering materials to build the perfect place to lay her eggs. The intricate process shows how layers of lawn moss are used to make a soft foundation before it’s finished with feathers.
Blue Tits typically spend between one and two weeks building their nests, although we have seen cases where it’s happened in as little as one day. The first layer of the nest is built using lawn moss found in nearby gardens. It creates a soft foundation and base layer. Then, structural materials such as twigs are added to give it strength. It is then finished with a soft layer of feathers and animal hair. This creates a soft cushion to hold the eggs.
The nest is designed to be expanded, so when the eggs hatch and the chicks grow, the bird expands the nesting cup to accommodate their bigger size.
