The First 24 Hours of a Kestrel Chick's Life

Join this young Kestrel family as they embark on the first twenty-four hours of life. Shortly after the eggs hatch, parents must scramble to find food to keep the newborns alive and provide protection from unexpected dangers.
After hatching, the first twenty-four hours of a Kestrel chick’s life is often the most challenging. They emerge weighing a mere 5-6 grams and are an inch or two in size. Both parents work tirelessly to provide food and warmth for the newborns. Although adorned with down feathers, the chicks lack the ability to regulate their own body temperature, so both parents must keep them warm. Parenting duties are split between the male and female, although the male will do most of the hunting.
