I'm also a freshman, and I have something to say about this. It's good to learn the moves. But you need to learn how to control your opponents, this Arm Throw is an exposure move, not a Control move.

@@ummno4849 First of all, wrestling is a pretty broad term that covers many different sports (I think wrestling includes judo as well). A more precise wording is that wrestling includes some sports that are older than modern judo. But modern folkstyle / freestyle are not significantly older than modern judo. Ancient wrestling styles (there are many) are *completely* different from modern wrestling. For example, in Greek wrestling, submissions were allowed, and there were no points for takedowns. The only way to score was by forcing the opponent to submit, touch their back to the mat, or step out of the ring (all of which all scored one point, first person to score 3 wins). Chinese wrestling (shuai jiao) is even older, around 6,000 years old. In some versions, competitors fought on a raised platform with the goal of knocking the other person off. Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling were invented in the early 19th century, but they did not look like modern wrestling. For example, there were no points until around 1941 (same is true of American folkstyle), so anything less than a pin (back exposure, takedowns, go-behinds, etc) would not score. Needless to say, stalling penalties did not exist either. Since then, the sports have undergone many changes, and it's only in recent times that they have become the fast paced sports that we see today. The same can be said of modern judo. Judo was invented in the late 19th century. But modern judo looks nothing like judo of the 19th century. It starts looking like the modern version around the 1960's, thanks to its inclusion in the Olympics. Anyways, in the modern versions of these sports, the arm throw is a primary attack in judo, akin to a high crotch or head-inside single in wrestling. On the other hand, the arm throw is merely a secondary (or even tertiary) attack in folkstyle / freestyle. It's obvious that judo places more emphasis on this throw than folkstyle or freestyle.

This brings me back to pretty much my only moment of glory in wrestling. Well, it was kind of glory for a second and then got scary in a way. The opponent was not a strong or skilled wrestler. The arm throw was one of the few moves I really paid attention to in training. He seemed clueless and kind of just let me do it if I remember correctly. I was so pleased for about two seconds, and then he did not get up. He seemed to have been severely stunned. He was okay after a bit though, and the other team informed me that he was prone to injury. So that made me feel less guilty about it.

@Gumba237 The keys is momentum. This doesn't work unless your opponent is push into you. To set him up you need to push into him (which naturally should bait him to push back) and then you hit it. The footwork is vital also. You need to swivel your hips hard and your back should almost take the place of where your opp is standing. So as his momentum is going forward, the power of your hips (and back) is bringing him over top of you.

to prevent injury a judoka told me that you should try and not fall flat or put out your legs, he said that your best chance is letting the side of the arm that the opponent has hit first and kinda roll the rest and make sure you're not stiff when you hit, from there the momentum from the roll can be kept to belly down by pushing and bridging to one side then the other if the guy tries to put a pin on you

An important factor is following up or rolling into your opponent. It could be that you're rolling too much into it and he ends up above you. Or you don't roll enough and you're not exerting as much pressure on him, thus making it easier for him to roll you over. It takes practice. But you'll get it. It took me a good week to get a good consistent throw.

it's the convergent evolution in wrestling. While this case foregoes any stable stance for bracing and lifting for directional changes and would be the same as momentum based ipponsei, the theory is essentially the same when you boil it down, though I think that Ipponsei would lend itself equally to going to the ground or staying standing, this would want to go to the ground to maintain control, either for a sport pinfall or self defense submission.

Beautiful arm throw. Do you always have both arms under during the throw or can you utilize an over on the wrist side and under on the armpit side?

The classic arm throw is from an over under position so yes you can throw from there. The point of this throw is to make your opponent feel comfortable after blocking his shot by giving him the inside position. So, both your arms are outside after the block. The outside arm on the throw side clamps his forearm to your chest while your other arm goes around and under the opponent's other arm as you back step in for the throw.

Obi I think his name is (sorry if I am wrong or spelled it wrong), is a man of steel as in every video he gets such punishment, I wont be suprised if he is a champion or something.

Hope you got disqualified, that poor kid probably wont go to tournaments ever again. You even find that funny that you almost broke his arm. Bet you don't know how much physical pain that causes... I remember my fights, one guy tried to throw me but he grabbed my arm in a wrong way, failed the throw. And after failing he rotated almost breaking my arm, i don't fear the pros i fear the begginers. I fear people like you.
