Blacksmithing - Making a kindling splitter
Follow along as I make my take on a kindling splitter. A fun project with a lot of room for your own design ideas. I also utilize the "side set" tool I made in a previous video.

I couldn’t be bothered to look up what kindling splitter meant, so i sat through the whole video without a clue what kind of contraption this would become. Now i know and have to say: very nifty!

For me, it's the bouncy hammer on the anvil sound. Makes me happy.
Never seen a kindling splitter before. It does an amazing job!! Wish I had one about fifty years ago.
Once I saw it in operation, my childhood self became extremely jealous. Forget my favourite hatchet, I needed one of these 20 years ago.
I love the finger protection measures! Such clever. As always, a gorgeous fabrication. Thank you for sharing it.

Blacksmithing is like sculpting, it's an art and only those who have an eye for art will see it. Beautiful tool made by artist not just blacksmith.
I suspected this video would get made after the side set tool was made. Very inspiring as always!

Thanks Neil! It's a simple tool with it's limitations, but a fun build!
Wonderful work, AND great cinematography. My granddad was a blacksmith from 1910 to 1957. But I never got to see him work. Vids like this help me to connect to him.
I always enjoy seeing one of your videos arrive. I've seen similar kindling splitters but nothing as beautiful and stylish as yours. Your blacksmithing channel is my very favorite. This spring I'm hoping to get started on my blacksmithing shop. Thank you for what you do. Many blessings my friend.

I like to see the Japanese and Torbjörn handling the iron and I am more and more impressed. Congratulations!!!!
I recall seeing a version of this several years ago and have been thinking of making one. It was a pleasure to watch you build this one. Wonderful.

Always a treat Torbjorn! Love the design, its efficiency, and handy to use. The artisanship in the curve, finger clearance, cleats and leaf petal anchor is what makes your work such a treasure. Wishing you and your family a warm and cozy time until spring arrives. ~PJ

Very nice! That pine tar finish is pretty amazing. I have to confess I didn't know how it would be used until you showed it towards the end of the video.
Your videos are mesmerizing and expertly produced. And your craftsmanship speaks for itself. The other blacksmiths I watch on KZread have either slowed down production or stopped entirely so I appreciate the fact that you’re still producing these great videos.

Beautiful Torbjorn! Works great!
My father was a blacksmith and a welder. I watched him make and repair many, many things during my lifetime. I never saw him make a thing like this. I really wish he was alive to see this video. I think he would have tried to make one the next day. Because of my father I know a bit more about blacksmithing than most, and this device is a tool and a work of art too. I don't need kindling, but I still want one one of these devices.

Very nice job on the kindling splitter Torbjorn. But then like all your other projects I'm not surprised it turned out mighty fine. Well done sir!!
Nice and handy tool, pleasure to watch. Totally Åwesome as always!👍🏻
Beautiful work, as always!
What a beautiful and ingenious tool! The video was such a pleasure to watch, particularly the creation of the rivet/hinge and the metal shavings circling around in the hemispheric depression. I certainly would have liked to have this tool when I was a child. We burned so much wood back then.
Beautiful as always! I loved the ball socket for the mounting screw, and using the ball peen hammer to make it is the struck of genius!!!
Even up to the very end before you put a piece of wood in there i had no idea what you made. Now i get it and i love it! Thanks for the awesome content and a beautiful build. now i see what you intended to use the side set tool for!

This video doesn't just show what the set too was for, but answers a really old question I have had. I saw one of these in an antique shop and had no idea what it was. The shop owner couldn't figure it out either. Now I know what it is, and I think I might add something like this to my offerings when I actually start Smithing in about a month.

MVH Theresa

Stunning craftsmanship. Never seen one of those before, but now that I have I can’t help but wonder how that’s the case. Form meets function in a way that makes it so safe that even a child could use it. Amazing!

This is a very safe way of splitting kindling, and the design of this one is excellent, but, it does require a lot of equipment to make! Many thanks for posting this. Chris B.
I have to think if i lived in all that snow i would have become a ɓlack smith instead of a carpenter. Also that was one beautiful anvil. Never seen one that big before

Blacksmithing skills don't happen overnight. Thanks for taking us along and job well done. Regarding splitter, I make my kindling with 16" straight grain Fir and my Sager Double bit Cruiser's Axe.
I've wanted one of these for so long! And the fact that you can make one in 15 minutes means that I could pry make one in 30. 🙂
