    I found this channel only very recently, thanks to The Photographic Eye. It is already one of my favourite channels. Things I like about it: - Relaxed conversational style from a very relatable person - Perfect length to watch over a coffee - Directs me, a relative novice, to the work of celebrated photographers - Nice graphical and musical elements that serve the content well, without ever being distracting I'm going out with my camera today, inspired by this channel!

    I wondered if the old painting masters ever debated charcoal/pencil vs water color/oil.

    Yeah, that's what seems silly about the whole "true art photography is in black and white" argument that consumed the middle part of the 20th century: painting had been in colour for what, 3000 years at that point?

  • @JamieMPhoto

    There's the Ted Grant quote, “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls.” I don't entirely agree with his sentiment, though I think (after lots of thinking about this) that what you said about B&W being a natural filter is very accurate. I tell people one of the main reasons I like film because it's a more direct filtering/interpretation of the world than digital. I think color can definitely be a "reduction," but in its natural state, illustration seems more immediate. I think B&W is a great way for photographers to learn how to interpret the world instead of merely capturing it. Thanks for another great video!

    I like the idea that black and white is a reduction but I do think that black and white has a better chance of showing structure, pattern and expression of feelings. Great video.

    I think that it is our natural inability to digest and interpret the information in a colour photograph, that elevates BW photography to a medium supreme in the expression of mood, feeling or structure.

  • @owenrodgers8020

    @owenrodgers8020

    that assumes that the scene with the structure, or pattern will be shown off in black and white. a lot of colours tend to end up as grey unless filters/film is used to modify one colour over another. there are a thousand instances in which colour is the expression of the feeling... as T mentioned - you have to shoot with the intention of ending up in black and white or colour

  • @OwenEDell
    @OwenEDell2 жыл бұрын

    To me it comes down to subject matter. If the scene is mainly about form, texture, and contrast then it's worth trying as a black and white image. On the other hand, if the scene includes, for instance, a beautiful red door, then it would be a shame to miss out by insisting on a b & w image. And you know, many subjects are equally good in either. I like digital because I can play with this and other matters in post. I often find it hard to prefer one outcome or the other. So yes, it's really a non-debate, like arguing over whether a sunrise is better than a sunset. The main thing is to keep making photos!

    This is a really nice comment. I similarly dislike the film vs digital debates - both are wonderful and the choice simply depends on your individual needs/intentions. Most importantly, as you said, just keep making photos!

    I'm an amateur trying to develop my "black and white eye". Yet I could never clarify what the roles between b&w and color were, specifically how I should think about them. I'm so glad I found your channel and this video. This puts into words what my gut was telling me--to value both mediums for the good that lies in both. Great job on the video. I especially liked the format and the abundance of historical and personal examples of what you were describing.

    There really is no debate between the two. Each one has it's place. Some images look amazing in color, while others look better in b&w. And at the end of the day, even that is subjective. Thanks for sharing.

    Yeah, I think the laid back style is nice because you're just introducing us to content and giving your feelings about it casually rather than making a statement, but videos with a strong, planned out, personal take are also good because they show how strongly you feel towards one topic or another and why you think that way. I think it's a spectrum of the laid-back-ness and it just has to be felt out for every video. Also, great perspective to have on B&W v. Color!

  • @filmic1
    @filmic12 жыл бұрын

    Terrific survey! Thank you. b+w = interpretive as opposed to colour = descriptive. Neat! I was taken aback when I saw that Magnum was posting Capa's colour work as I wasn't expecting it. When I think of colour, my intention is photograph the 'colour,' rather than the elements, texture and their arrangement. So I kept one body with colour film, usually slide, and two other bodies with b+w film.

  • @washingtonradio

    To me debates of 'black & white vs color' or 'film vs digital' are foolish and strike me as a form of gatekeeping. The arguments are not about the final image or artistic intent but about the tools used to achieve one's artistic intent. Now, most of us will, by default have a strong preference for 'x' because 'x' best suits each person's artistic intent. 'X' itself is a set of personal choices, e.g. B&W film or digital color, flash or no flash, etc. As you noted in closing, it is not how we create images but that we create images that is important.

    I did not know there was a debate BnW or colors, for me me the choice depends of the intention, some scene are just better in BnW, some scenes are better in colors. BnW is not just a desaturated color scene, when shooting black and white I am looking for contrasts or textures. I much prefer portrait in BnW, it brings more attention on the subject

  • @Thorpal
    @Thorpal2 жыл бұрын

    Great video Tatiana! I'll just add, looking at both Erwit's and yours scenes shot in both style, that when a color one works better over a b&w one it is because color is the main interest/subject. I'm not saying that color pictures have no substance but themselves, but there's an immediacy that is more easily captured that way. When b&w really works much better, you've touched "un je ne sais quoi" or something else light has dropped there for you. There's no option better than the other. Color always works, but when I think about some Tom Baril "pears work" I'd say when b&w truly works it can only be by landslide.

    Great topic. My feeling is that the image dictates whether it wants to be black and white or color. If the colors don't add anything to the impact or story, I believe they distract. That said, I am trying to up my color game so I can be confident in my choice. I shoot with a Leica SL 601 in raw so I can make the decision at any time. I can change the EVF to show color or B&W which sometimes helps me decide, though I tend to set it for B&W so I can concentrate on the light and shadow and deal with the color later.

    Thank you for a lovely take on the subject ! I myself virtually had sleepless nights on this, to eventually come to realisation, the light bulb so to speak, that it is likely all about the light ! If you have top 12 noon sun in summer, you cannot do much in colour because of shades and contrast - a different story here with noir. And on the opposite - you get to the golden hour, or into the rainlight, nightlight - it must be a Kodachrome or a Ektachrome ! And this is how I am forcing myself into in my photography, sometime failing.. Take care

    Thank you for you great videos. I love the general tone, and above all a content that does focus on the photographs and the photographers, not the camera and lenses. When I look at one of your videos I don't fear to be interrupted by some shopping advice... I shoot both BW and colour. BW mostly because it forces you to see your scene with a different eye, with no hope to make it "realist". Color is great if there are "color contents" to show. Saul Leiter is for me a master of colors. The subject in his work is "the colors"...

    Thank you for the ideas to ponder. I don't know that I have ever understood why people want to rationalize a difference between the two mediums. To me it has similarities to other comparisons like : MS vs Mac, vinyl vs digital, or hand tools vs power tools, the differences are subjective and have little meaning outside the world of the adherents. I use the Pentax K1, I also have the Pentax k1000 and LX. I think I will start carrying one of these cameras as a second camera.

    Yes, I very much like your thoughtful reflections. Deeply grounded, relevant, and practical. Can you someday do a follow-up on why color is often more difficult and even a disadvantage? Enjoyed the video and discussion. I use primarily Leica M10-P and GRIII, not that the camera matters. I used to have the M246 and loved going out with the commitment of "only" black & white. I eventually sold it to acquire the M10-P which I love and shoot color and sometimes go out looking for black & white with the intention of converting the color. I appreciate having the flexibility to do both depending on the scene, however I really love black & white and wish in a way I could just fully commit to just that.

    I am a black and white film photographer. And this is only because I adore those images and their grain. Just like Saul Leiter, he chose color to build very beautiful images. I believe that today there is no debate, simply, each one chooses what they feel most comfortable with, or what medium provides what they are looking for. I was very amused to see a documentary where Doisneau stated that he was shooting in black and white because color film was very expensive and difficult to process at the time. We should not put obstacles to our creativity, nor consider absurd debates; If you want to express yourself, do it with all your heart. Congratulations by your work. It's a fantastic Chanel, and I enjoy it so much!!

If there actually was no debate the need for this video wouldn't exist. There will likely always exist a debate concerning color vs black & white, film vs digital, camera formats, lens focal lengths... and on and on. Good one Tatiana! As a person who shoots both color and b&w, not concurrently however, I find both require a slightly different approach which makes it interesting. Both have their merits and both are equally fun to me. I do subscribe to the notion that it’s best to stick to one, while you do a project. After I shoot b&w for a while it takes me a few rolls to see in color again.

    For me it depends on the image. In design school we thought of color as a design element. In photography it becomes another part of the composition.

    I really like your approach on this topic and I share your opinion. As you mentioned the choice of B&W or color was dictated by technical and economical reasons. However, the reduced amount of information captured in B&W requires a strong composition to convey a strong impact. Composition also plays a major role in color, but the photographer has a larger palette available, more information. For historical reasons we are used to see B&W photos of certain subjects, such as street photography, but I don't think there is really a preferred format for any given subjects and that decision belongs to the photographer, artist.

    Thanks, interesting video and discussion! You showed so many great examples! It's funny that before photography, most famous paintings had important aspects of color to them. It would be difficult to point to a pre-photography work of art with absence of color, except for drawings and sketches but they often had a notion of being quick or incomplete. But, in photography, a black-and-white image offers a lot more perhaps because of the potential for complex detail, textures, and gradients of tones, do you think?

  • @TatianaHopper

    @TatianaHopper

    Hey Jeff, very interesting question! I really agree with your point and I think its really valid. I honestly didn't think of it before but its true paintings always had colours in them or at the least product (sketches were mostly BW as you wrote). I think in photography black and white does over more and photography unlike painting offers less room for manipulation and its like painting with light because it depends on it, that's why I think you're right when you say BW in photography potentially offers more detail, textures etc... thank you for watching!

    I agree in some people rather to be shooting in both medias in Color, and B/W. When I was in High School, (Mission High-Go Bears) as I spent my free time in the School Library as the first item to look in Color was an Issue of National Geographic as the issue was on JAPAN. As I look at the images, and took notes, and figuring out in what lens, film, camera, but it was the image that was important. Then soon to City College to learn more about Color VS Black White was even more interesting to see a film on Bruce Davidson of East 100th Street documentary in Black & White, as the images were so stronger. Then also learning more images in Black & White with seeing images comparing to Weegee to W Gene Smith. Later at the same time that the city was facing the news event in which I decided to load my camera with Color film as Fuji release a 400 speed color neg in 1977 in which the event was on a Eviction of a Resident Hotel. So I took shots as when looking at them that they were in Color as these were real people saying to City Hall Of San Francisco "We will not Move", and I kept continued to shoot the series in Color. Only one teacher did not like the series as I turn them in as a final editorial assignment, well he gave me a "C" as I protested as the department hired this person as a photo instructor but he was for the Corporate Companies as in one of the hired photographers that he work for, So we fired him as the C turn into a B+. Unfortunately the negatives were lost but I still have the color prints in which it is fine, but that was not the first time that I accepted Color, as looking at the Works of Ernst Haas as when working a the camera store Kodak was really pushing for their slide films as he was mentioned with 4 other photographers "Haas, Turner, Maisel and Art Kane. Haas said that when he buys his 40 rolls of Kodachrome that he would Smell the roll as he knows when it is Ripe to Shoot, as Kodak was really pushing to people to shoot more slide film since Fuji, and Agfa were also pushing Kodak in their new E6 Slides films, as I remember shooting a roll of Agfa 200 I was very amazed with the results like shooting Kodachrome, and when I head that Kodak was discontinuing Kodachrome everything, that I had rolls of Kodachrome in my fridge, about 19 rolls that I shot in Japan of 1992, and only one roll did not come out - only 10 shots did, as I scan them... As I still shoot, and most of my film in the fridge are now expired So I will have to alter the exposure, and well it will be fun and scanning them will be a challenge. As I have 2 boxes in the fridge, one box have shot, the other with film that has not been shot, and when I got my first medium format camera with only one lens, as I photograph my area where I live shooting in color, and since then my area was mostly industrial area then during the mid 1970's .Now the area is now as it went trending with Coffee shops, and Health Clubs, and Restaurants, and Trending Bars. But before that as I was surrounded with Old scenes of buildings falling apart, Train Yards with rail cars, A Cement factory that dates from the 1920's, and I was shooting Color as I got a chance to shoot it, and understood texture, form, and color. as I am glad that Kodak, and Fuji still have their slide film, But I need speed, and 100 does not cut on Overcast, ad rainy days. Unless that if you have a lens that is F/1.1.0 or Canon F/0.98 which is $$$$$$, and having 100 and 400 is Ok in my book. Ah the films that we sold at the store that I can tell you stories.... So I have to admit to accept in both medias, Color to Strong color to Haas, to Soft color to Meyerowitz, and also more to interested in the photographers like Stephen Shore, and Joel Meyerowitz But I do not want to copy them, I want to see to way in my seeing color. Now here is one Photographer that has not been mention until his death in 2016 that is photographer David Hamilton, as when seeing his work in how he controls color was like looking at a impressionist piece, in softens the colors, and also that reading his tech talk that he also experimented by pushing E4 Ektachome films as the only slide film that was fast was Ektachrome 160 ISO, as he must of had one hell of a film processor to have his photos well maintain the separation for printing, Yes I know his subject matter, but he also cause a trend in shooting color photography his way. So in Black White that I have admired the works of Diado Moriyama, and David D Duncan to see the rich contrast, and again not to copy them but to admired them. So I just keep shooting... So T Thanks for showing me videos of photographers that shoot both media.... That's Film Media...

    Thanks for the thought provoking commentary. I have been thinking about this for a while. I would like to mention two concepts, one in "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman, and the "Elements of Art". When we see something, the brain uses discreet Nuclei of subroutines that process information. Input leads responses that evolution has developed by survival advantages. Thinking fast is immediate, fast and not emotional. Fire-jump. The elements of line, shape, form, value, color texture and space likely have discreet nuclei in the brain (sorry I haven't researched that). Line and shape let you distinguish quickly between the Bear and your cow, so you don't shoot your cow. Color gives some degree of recognition of usual, green and unusual, poisonous snake. I suspect that B&W stimulates the nucleus for the first instance and Color stimulates the second example. Of course both work together but when we see B&W we may have a burst of recognition as pleasurable and with Color a burst of adrenaline which is slightly shocking. So yes your conclusion is enlightened that both are good and stimulate our mind to appreciate image.

    Good job! I'll just add a quote from Ernst Haas "Color does not mean b/w plus color. Nor is b/w just a picture without color. Each needs a different awareness in seeing and, because of this, a different discipline. The decisive moments in b/w and color are not identical. We should never judge a photographer by what film he uses - only by how he uses it." ✌

    really appreciate this video topic I definitely have "trouble" when choosing what to choose when doing work. And so the question I ask around is how to integrate both or to understand maybe each photo project is better illustrated with one or the other. I try to find and study photographers that have found success doing both. This Black and White vs Color selection I feel is similar to the question of which focal length prime lens i should pick to use for the rest of my life. Feels a bit exaggeration but its certainly the interpretation when seeing maybe too many videos on how some people are already locked in their 28mm or 35 or 50 etc etc then the aspect that one is more "skillful" similar to color or black and white that one version will be more "artistic" or meaningful when doing documentary.

    Hey Jay, thank you for your comment, I understand what your point, I personally cannot lock on one focal length just as much as I can't lock on either BW or colour, I guess we have to go with the flow and keep our mind and feelings open to it. I personally think that while shooting for a project it really depends on the subject and what we're trying to convey wether that is a principle, an idea, mood or feeling. Cheers for watching!

    A quote I heard somewhere was "God created the world in colour, why would I shoot in black and white?" which is a cool thought process I thought, but a counter to that could be, "The Lord said, 'Let there be light'" and Black and White really highlights the contrast between dark and light. I shoot mostly in colour, but not exclusively, it depends on how a scene feels to me.

    Came here on a recommend from Sean Tucker and very much glad I did. A few thoughts that came to me as I watched. -I learned to think in B&W, even when shooting colour. Probably because leftover artistic prejudice influenced me, but also for the idea that a good colour image was built on a structure of what made a good B&W image. Took a long time to shed those pretensions. Colour is its own thing. -I think part of the perception of what colour is, stems from film. With film, it is more difficult to have the control in the darkroom than it is with digital in the digital darkroom. I disagree that colour is an illustration. Colour, especially with digital, can be anything B&W can. Except greyscale -The idea that photography is ever a "mere capture of the world" is incorrect. It isn't just the storytelling potential, but in the difference between how we see the world and how the camera does; in our choices of subject, position, lens, etc -"Decisive moments" Ansel Adams photographs were decisive moments, it is just that their moments were a bit longer. But none of his images could have been made at any other time than when they were. Not taking anything away from HCB, but we tend to over categorise categories.

    I think the complexity of color processing in the film era meant that photographers had far less control over the final result and so this limited many of their choices compared with those available to those who processed their own images in black and white darkrooms. Thankfully, that distinction is now moot in the digital age.

    Hi Tatiana, I like the laid back style, you still present and explore ideas well...which is why we keep coming back. I think of color and black & white as different languages. Not better or worse, simply different tongues. I would like to think I am fluent in both - but I don't believe I am. My color photography is rudimentary. I hold the idea that "color is the topic" when shooting. I'm a work in progress. My other thought is B&W was a democratic process with darkrooms in closets, bedrooms and basements all over the world. Color wasn't like that. The gap between the One Hour Photo, and fine art was huge. We had our two copies of 4X6s, and an occasional enlargement - but for me, black and white is the language I learned as a child, it is still my native tongue. Thank you T.

    Hey John! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, after reading a lot of comments on the colour developing I realised that it’s true that colour developing back then wasn’t like what it is today and definitely created a barrier between photographer and their work, so I think it’s something to ponder too, that a lot of people didn’t want or appreciate that separation. I too love developing but sometimes am discouraged to do colour because it takes longer than B&W, whereas with B&W sometimes I use a mono bath and in 5 minutes it’s done so it’s a contemporary example but still puts the point across. So for me I think you’re right B&W is more democratic in a way!!

    Sometimes when I shoot I don't see color. Sometimes I do. Later, in the digital darkroom, I'll try to determine what, if any, role color has to play, and then play with it. Sometimes color is cut, just like parts of the image that fall outside a crop. Sometimes color is the whole point of the image.
