    This is a regular struggle. Wow, You’re really good at explaining things. I generally follow 3 major parameters to decide if I want to edit in black n white 1) Is it a high contrast image? 2) What’s the mood I want to create? 3) Are the colours in the photo main subject? If the colours in the photo aren’t that interesting or playing a crucial role in making the photograph visually appealing, I lose them and go for monochromatic look.

    Sometimes I like to go shooting with the camera already set to b&w, so that I can focus on thinking about the picture before editing (it changes the whole mindset for the shooting)

    I still struggle with B&W. I love your B&W and other people's B&W but I hate my photos, even using B&W film. I don't know what it is. The subject and the background blend, subjects don't pop out. In color, I can notice every detail in the photo because color highlights every single object. I see colors and I can't imagine the world in B&W haha.

    @@juguetesjaponeses5020 You can still highlight a subject in black and white. If the subject is wearing white, try to make the background black and vice versa. Or get your subject in the light and the background in the shadows. You can also separate the subject by using a low aperture. A more general tip is to find a background that has almost no clutter. It really helps a photo if there are no other distractions.

    Quick tip to black and white photos: go to where light and shadow intersect. That normally is a good scene to shoot. And in post, try to increase the contrast of your photo, it may improve how your subject pops

    Hi ! ....I used to do this.... Shoot in colour RAW....Process the colour to mono, taking ages, not always successful... after a few years of doing this I decided to compliment my LUMIX GX8 with a GX9 this is permanently set to the MONO M L mode; it produces superb mono studies as high quality JPEGS... all they require might be a crop then a sharpen...this is done on my iPad Pro.....My GX8 is still set to Colour RAW... so the best of both worlds....I am so pleased that I discovered your channel ...

    Well put: my struggle usually is when I both like the composition and the colours of the image, each bringing it's own contribution to the image and each one detracting somehow from "strengthening" the final result in one direction or the other.

    I primerily shoot in B&W for street photography. Personally I belive it tells a better story, I can get better compasition by taking away all of the colors that can be overwhelming when taking the photo. In post I'll then use film settings (XT4) to see if I prefer the original image or colored. I also belive the difference in shade and lighting in a color dominant frame can enchance the black and white image in a way that portrays a better story.

    I always don’t get it when some photographers give their audience/students advice and tutorials based on their personal choices. Like b&w isn’t the right choice for digital cameras or like when one of their followers shares their photos with them, they start criticizing because “if i were you, i would do this and that”.

    I loved your explanations and now I defenitely have a better understanding why people might choose sometimes B&W. For myself, I really only use colour photography, because often when I see B&W images I just find them pretentious and can't help but thinking "nobody would even look at that image if it were in colour". So I really don't use b&w: it feels to me as if this was an easy fix for a bad image while pretending to be an "artist". These two factors let me prefer colour: it's more natural and demands more effort to get a good result.

  • @samdee7104
    @samdee71043 жыл бұрын

    When u shoot colour you see how it should look like in colour. If u shoot b/w you are thinking how it's going to look. Not editing afterwards. Actually u never were taking that picture, u just feel it's looking better as b/w than colour.

  • @JanneRanta
    @JanneRanta3 жыл бұрын

    How about editing the different color channels in b&w images? That could be part 2 of this video. I personally made a LUT for realistic luminance conversion from color to b&w. It's based on what human eye sees and was used back in the day to convert color tv signals to b&w. It's a great starting point rather than letting LR decide.

    I have to disagree with that statement Antonio. B&W photos have the ability to convey things in ways color photos sometimes can’t. For example, whenever I want to emphasize emotion in my portrait work, I almost always shoot it in B&W. Great video as always Faizal. You have a way to explain things without sounding like you are lecturing people. Keep up the great work. Greetings from the west coast. ✌🏽
