X-acly. Streets are what they are, sometimes crowded and sometimes empty, depending on what time and place.

With the current global health crisis, the empty streets are so haunting and tell a story without anyone in the frame.

I've always heard that street photography has to "tell a story", but as you showcase, an environment can tell a story by itself. Human presence is still in the environment, like the shoes on the wire, etc. Fantastic video man!

Personally I prefer street photography without people, telling a story without them can sometimes be more challenging in my opinion and at my age the slower pace is definitely a plus. :) I'm glad I found your channel and am happy to have subscribed.

After years of street photography looking for interesting people, i became a little jaded. It requires a certain mood and energy that as an introvert I don't always have. This was the video I was looking for. Subscribed ! Thank you

Herzog's photographs evoke a great sense of loneliness and solitude. The empty chairs ask, "where did all the people go?" When I look into a Herzog photo I wonder; "Why am I the only person here?"

There are so many things to photograph in the street without having to photograph people. Shadows, shapes, reflections, colors, materials. When you can make a beautiful composition with these elements, and you have done the best you can and you are satisfied with it, why not continue on this path. It is incredibly rich and endless.

Thank you so much for this! I've always struggled with my photography because I like to go out and about and just take pictures of my environment. I live in a very small border town where there aren't many people walking around and those that do will often be bothered by my photography because no one tries streetphotography in this tiny town! I even got banned from the streetphotography subreddit because my pictures didn't have people in them, and I got to a point where I didn't know what style of photography I was aiming for or what the purpose of any of my pictures really was! I found this video reassuring and think that maybe this 'streetphotography' without people might fall more into the category of documentary photography, that's what I've been labeling my work as of recently. Any way, thanks for your honest opinions and beautiful photos, love your content!

Hi Domblis, might I offer a suggestion. . . Stop thinking about yourself as any kind of photographer. You are an artist creating images using a camera and drawing with light. Don't let others limited perceptions stop you from doing or question what you love. Might I also suggest spending some time in the company of Harry Callahan, Joel Meyerwitz, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston.

I lived in cities most of the time and I think you have to be respectful so people accept you in the neighbourhood before you go and snap everybody. I wouldn't like some stranger putting their lens in my face, either.

Great content. The music, mood, narration, transitions are all hypnotising. I get very engaged and am learning.

"Capturing the human presence" What a wonderfully simple definition. And refreshing. If I had to wait for people to get into frame in my hometown, I'd be a long time waiting for a photo, much less a GOOD photo.

Picked up the book recently as well! You and Fred are my inspirations. Fred is such an underrated photographer who is teaching me to love my current city, just as he loved Vancouver. And like Herzog, you deserve more recognition. Thank you for your work!

Quality video as always. Labels and rules are the worst things that can limit you as a photographer, especially the beginners who are yet to find their style or what they like in photography. There are many great street photographers that are including photos with no people in their work. Document your city or village and everyday life in it in the way you find interesting, that's really it.

In order to avoid arguing with idiots I just call it urban landscape.

The "background" composition skills you'll learn from shooting without people will elevate any people photography you do beyond that of most portrait photographers, because only the best know how to compose the background so well that the human subject isn't really even needed. As a bonus, you'll feel more comfy shooting street when your focus is on the environment rather than the individuals.

Completely agree with you, I picked up this Herzog book earlier this year myself and it is beautiful. If you're looking for other great images that don't feature people in a similar way check out Luigi Ghirri's work, his work was fantastic at documenting just the normality of life in Italy across the 70's and 80's mostly without people but just the things humanity leaves and builds around them.

Excellent points well made. To paraphrase urban sketcher Iain Fennelly, I photograph where people have been. You can see where people have passed through or shaped the urban landscape.

Great tip on Herzog and here on Aruba I am looking for angles/scene first, then I hope there's punctuation that can happen. Did not think to look for remnants... Thank you!

Very nice vid 🙌🏽 as someone new to this style I can say that if you're timid it's way better to go on a slow pace, just walking around, observing and shooting things of interest, no matter if there're people or not. Helps a lot to accommodate yourself with being out there and makes the process a lot easier. Anybody who doubts they can do it, has never tried. Go out and shoot people 🤘🏽

That "slow observation" is what I like to hold close. I latch on to what I call "Urban Photography" and here in Japan it's SUPER taboo to take photos of people in a street-style way, so I opt to not do this. The slow observation comes in to play here in a big way. Focusing on textures, contrasts, insane lighting during evening rain shoots... that's amazing. For me, Street Photography is Urban Photography. What do you think?

That's the kind of photography I like doing too. When I shoot pictures in the street, I like to take my time and observe things from various angles, notice the little things, with no people in the frame. That to me is much more enjoyable than trying to catch people in a photo. I do like shooting portraits in certain conditions, where the subject is happy and willing to be snapped and where we take our time with it, or if I'm walking around with friends, but I would never photograph a stranger on the street without them knowing, unless they're so far away that they're just an unidentifiable stick figure. It's just not something I like doing.

How I miss Kodachrome 25! Really nice video. 👍 I don't see myself as a street photographer, because I don't take pictures of other people, because I'm not comfortable with others taking pictures of me. But I do take a lot of pictures in the city. Of course everything is influenced people.

lovely video bro! you have really inspired me. I would always aim to shoot people for street photography because thats what I thought i had to do, but the concept of "whats left behind " really makes me think about the direction I wish to go in with my photography. I remember watching a programme on tv about an old guy who's black and white photography was so simple yet powerful. For instance he shot a set of keys that had been left on a park bench and for me that particular pic told so much, I've been struggling to explain why but i think now you have helped me understand. Are there particular settings that i can use ie; shutter speed to help me achieve such shots? right now I just shoot on aperture mode f1.8 and a min 1/500 shutter speed. these setting are mainly for catching people on the move but is there a better way to shoot the stillness ???

The style, the trend or the fashion becomes very much secondary or even transcended altogether when one has clear vision and purpose. I enjoy taking photos of completely empty spaces without people, animals or cars, even without subject on those spaces and as a result the feeling this spaces evoke are much richer and stronger in my opinion.

It most defiantly is. My approach to street photography will maybe see 1 out of every 10 photos I post with people as the main focus. It is a powerful subject but it shouldn't be regarded as the only valid subject. To this point, I went out on a dreary December Day about 5 years ago at a small downtown district that was empty of people, but had all sorts of decorations, art and window displays up; and I really enjoyed that set, and it was a fun exercise and challenge for me. This concept was also re-iterated to me during the Covid Lockdown where empty streets were littered with signs and barricades stating businesses were closed due to Covid and it presented an opportunity for some really unique once in a lifetime street photography shots. Candid or posed portraits with a city background can make for impacting photos and add to storytelling, but I think the "Hand of Man" shots of how just the recent presence of Humanity (whether it be signs, Architecture angles, a Bicycle chained to a street meter, a pile of discarded clothes, etc) can have just as much of an Impact on Street Photography.

Rules were made to be broken. Photograph what YOU like, not somebody else's ideal. Empty street scenes are enigmatic. Cropping architecture in contrasting light makes for great abstract designs, and don't get bogged down with focus or exposure perfection, the unknown is more interesting.

Don’t worry about whether or not you’re doing it right or wrong! This genre is very unique in that there are so many ways to approach it, so just keep shooting!

The artificial environment by itself can tell a story with no human presence because is just a human product. And at the same time we are modeled by that artificial environment.

I found that mostly, depending on the situation, people don't bother if they're in the picture. And some even seem to like to be captured in the frame. Sometimes I wait for them to pass, and I often had people appearing like they were amused being photographed. I think it's best if they don't care or are surprised. I don't want wannabe-models in my pics. When someone waits for me to shoot or walks around me, I like to say thank you or sorry to them.

Art should have no rules. Great video.

Though I don't see you shoot with DSLR's, I would love to see you shoot street photography on a Canon T7i ! I just got this camera and I love it
