My One Year Black & White Challenge - What I‘ve learned

In 2020 I decided to photograph everything in Black & White. It was a challenge I gave myself to learn more about Black & White Photography and discover what it means to me and my photography going forward. In this video I want to share my experience and the lessons I learned.

Colour is for how something looks like, black and white is for how something feels like.

Color vs.black & white. I choose B&W ~ 75% of the time. I’m near 70 and that is what I grew up with. Color was always more expensive. I mostly use Fuji cameras and use a B&W jpeg film simulation with RGY filter simulations. I have a button that will change the film simulation to color for a quick change. The advantage of using the film simulations is since the camera is mirrorless, I see the image in the EVF or LCD the way the film simulation is set up. Very handy to see in B&W before I press the shutter. Can’t understand why in the 60’s onward professionals most used B&W. It wasn’t considered artistic if the image was in color. People like Saul Leiter were using color film but by and large didn’t share their work. How silly. It is all about how you see the world. You showed how the traffic cones change in nature based whether you use color or not. Sometimes the subject IS the color. When I shoot in B&W I like,to underexposed the image by about half a stop. I like strong contrast and crushing the blacks. When B&W is normally or over exposed the blacks turn into grays. I don’t like that look. The Ricoh GRs have a film sim that gives me the crushed blacks I like. Of course now we use digital cameras. We have a 2nd choice as to whether use B&W or color. Shoot both! Use a B&W jpeg simulation and also shoot raw. The raw file can be your color negative. This way you have the best of both worlds. The thing is to take and make images. We aren’t using film. We aren’t limited by the film we have in the camera. We aren’t limited to 20 or 36 images in a roll of film. We don’t have to wait or pay for the film to be developed to see what our images look like. I like and appreciate your year of shooting in black and white. The value of shooting this way was clearly expressed in your video with Sean Tucker. Please hyperlink to that video as you did mention it in this video. Ricoh. Fuji. Leica. You are a man of several flavors. Mask on Nurse Marty

I started shooting in 1959 while serving in the Army stationed in Munich. All we shot was B&W as we couldn't afford color. I went on to shoot while serving in Vietnam, using what ever film I could find. Later I shot for two newspapers and that again was always in B&W. So for over 40 years I shot with film and never in color. Then digital happened and I played some with color and Brides wanted their weddings shot in color. Now I own a FujiFilm Pro 2 and I shoot with three film simulations two B&W and one color. I really see in B&W.

Hélène Binet gave an explanation that physically, the eyes receive b&w with different sensors than colour, the eye rods that read b&w are responsible for analysis of form and that happens a faster than the reading colour. She wasn't so convinced entirely but wondered about it. She shoots predominately b&w but also some colour

Great video Samuel. For me as an 'old' hobby photographer born the same year as Aleksey Myakishev it is immediately clear what Chris explains: with BW you have to compose in contrasts, not in colour. It is a different way of view. You can see Chris is from a digital era and has a hard time discovering and describing it, as we are overflooded with colour nowadays and can even pimp the images with software to be more colourful than usual.

This is wonderful Sam, and thought provoking. I can’t remember where I first heard it, but somewhere I picked up the notion that you should get comfortable with black and white so that when you use colour you do so with intention because it has something to add; it has purpose. I lack the skills to help with your book, but I’m buying a copy for sure.

Some people say there were no good photo opportunities during last two years in the ongoing pandemic, but in fact there will be no other time in one's lifetime like this. I took street photos of the empty streets for what it was and couldn't before with all the busy people walking around. And when there was one person walking into my frame, it was only one person. B&W was great for the past two years as for me it represented real life with all its color sucked out; everyone was so gloomy it just worked with B&W.
