@@RobespierreThePoof I would say it's because even not all locals know how to speak those dialects, especially younger people, so I think that's what makes being able to speak some dialects so special. I grew up in the city where the dialect is spoken, but still I cannot speak very fluently, because I only speak that dialect with my grandparents (which is kinda sad). It is indeed quite different from Mandarin, but it's more like an ancient version and some words and sentence structures are similar. In southern China, dialects vary a lot even in two neighboring cities. So I guess that also makes them hard to even understand.

@@xinkaichen2877 That is actually true. Even in my country Malaysia, the younger generation of Chinese not many know how to speak the dialects. Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew, Fuzhou, Hainanese and Foochow. The dialects are slowly dying which is actually sad when you think about it. So when someone speaks it, it is rare and you'll appreciate them. Let alone a non-chinese.

Its awful to hear that he passed away. I stumbled on these videos way back, and it amazed me how such a simple thing as sharing a language can help people feel welcome in a world that is often filled with so much "us vs them". It was always wonderful to see how quickly he built a connection and warmed up peoples days. In just a few videos he spread his positivity to so many people who found his content. I like to think that he changed peoples outlooks a few shades brighter, and we really need that these days. He may be gone, but the footprints he left behind will last a long time. Carrying a little bit of extra positivity and community-heart with us would be a great tribute to what this gentleman embodied, even if its hard to do in such trying times. Let his spark catch on.

I cried while i watched, as I have experienced that too & she reminded me of my mom. . Then I cried when i heard Laoshu had passed away (Honestly i'm not usually that much of a crier)..He made so many positive connections, breaking down barriers with apparent ease through the gift of language, obvious intellect, & generous, loving personality....& that infectious laugh..... He was unique. .

Laoshu! My man! I needed this today. I’m filled with anxieties both about COVID, and the xenophobic backlash, and it’s such a great relief to be reminded that there are people who see the beauty in our culture (every time I say that, I hear Jason scott Lee from Dragon saying it, but anyway....) The world needs this right now. I work at a grocery store and we’re required to stay open. Among the occasional strange look, and paranoid/racist customer, I’ll be exposed to the virus more than most so that people can access their groceries. All of a sudden, I’m doing important work... lol. I think what you’re doing is tremendously important as well. Much love, brother (I mean that in a sincere way, not the slightly cringey way,) 👊👊🏾✊🏾✊
