Everyone suggesting Muppets (which IS good) but nobody's mentioning the best of them: 1951's SCROOGE. It's pretty much a perfect adaptation of the book with a brilliant performance by Alastair Sim. If black & white doesn't please you, then 1999's A CHRISTMAS CAROL starring Patrick Stewart is quite good.

The Chrismas Carol was Charles Dickens's most popular book. The most successful one in his career. Many television shows have used the plot of this book for a holiday special and there have been many adaptations of the book itself over the years. Of course, it was predictable, it was following the plot of a 200-year-old book that has been a holiday classic for several generations.

I'm a bit curious if she's even heard of A Christmas Carol before as she seems to think these different shows just happened to fall onto the same plot or are copying each other or something. I would've thought the fact that they were doing the show in the movie and the fact that it's called Scrooged would've been a tip off but maybe not! haha

@@TheOtherOne111 Yeah. Suppose if you want to get technical she says she never heard of Charles Dickens' Scrooge. But there is no Charles Dickens' Scrooge as it was call A Christmas Carol and just contained a character named Scrooge. It still probably means she's never heard of A Christmas Carol either but I could see some confusion there if she thought Scrooge was an actual story. Either way, she seems very unaware this story has been around for a long time.
“The plot is very predictable.” It should be, it’s a beat for beat of Charles Dicken’s Christmas Carol. It’s even the live performance they’re preparing for and performing at the end.

Dickens is an extremely famous author and A Christmas Carol is his most well-known book, published in 1843. Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly business owner who underpays his clerk, Bob Cratchit, and won’t give him the day off for Christmas because he hates Christmas. His dead business partner shows up, says he’s been punished in death, forced to carry around the chains he forged in life, but tells Scrooge he can still be saved and will send three ghosts to him. After the ghosts, Scrooge has a change of heart. That’s the short-short version. There are many performances and adaptations of the book. I think a really good one is A Muppet Christmas Carol. Yes, it is performed by The Muppets and has minor tweaks, but it sticks really close to the story.

I think I witnessed a Christmas miracle. I have never encountered someone of Mary's age who has never encountered Dickens's A Christmas Carol. We are talking about a book that has been one of the most popular Christmas themes for roughly 200 years coming from one of the greatest authors who ever lived. Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities just to name a few. The "A Christmas Carol" story is the single most adapted story in film and TV. Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol is the most classic Christmas story. Literally everyone has done a version of this from the Flinstones to Jim Carey in an animated version to HBO doing a TV version to there being several live action versions that play it straight and countless others that parody or do their own version ever since the copyright was available to the public. Everyone undoubtedly has seen some version of this at some point in their life. A Christmas Carol and Treasure Island are two of the most adapted stories in cinema.
The fairy ghost is the grandmother from the second Adams family that's probably why she's familiar

My theory is Herman was actually an angel and not really a human, and was there specifically to help change Frank's mind.
Literature dies the slow death of a 1,000 cuts. Each generation reads less, and each generation looses some previous generation's treasures. I am guilty as anyone. I grew up in the 70's, and I did read Dickens' A Christmas Carol (by choice), but the list of great authors and books I haven't read leaves me ashamed, and despondent for the future of this world's culture.
Frank's (Bill Murray) boss is Legendary Hollywood actor Robert Mitchum. He was considered one of Hollywood's tough /rebellious actors on and off screen .
Almost every Christmas special is based on either A Christmas Carol or It’s A Wonderful Life
One cannot look at okder movies with the hyper sensitivy of this era. It's a guy who's a Scrooge and who changes.

It is so endearing that you thought the show you mentioned was the only other version of this story put to screen. Since Charles Dickens published the novella, A Christmas Carol, in 1843 there have been more film versions of this story than any story ever written I should think.
How could you not want to comment on the whole Charles Dickens thing, I am crying laughing
Hi Miss Mary, Karen Allen is a great actress. Starman is also a good movie. I think it came out in 1984. Wish she was in more great movies.
This, A Christmas Story, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation are my favorite Christmas Movies!
Claire is played by Karen Allen of "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" fame. She was Marion in that film.
Us millennials know back when we had tube screen TVs, which means dogs and cats couldn’t see what was on the screen back then. It’s only been recently with LCD TVs that they can see anything. heck, back then if you had a video camera and you tried filming a TV all you would see is part of a faded picture with a analog white band going over the screen. The point is TV screens were weird back then. To the point, they were really only calibrated for human site spectrum range.
I love this movie. It's fun and funny and heartwarming. I love Frank's speech at the end especially the part about how it's the one day we are the people we always wanted to be. It's really so true. Then Calvin speaks and the song.
Having recently watched this, this movie was quite ahead of its time with the marketing strategy they had in this movie.

Ms. Cherry, I've often wondered if there are any Australian Christmas songs about the holiday being in the summertime? Christmas in the summer is something us northern hemispherians can't really get our heads around.
@michaelccozens
Жыл бұрын
There's a lot to delve into there, particularly as Christmas is mostly just hijacked winter-solstice celebrations (well, "celebrations"; it's mostly about keeping everyone from offing themselves by reminding them that, all evidence to the contrary, the world isn't dying and the sun is coming back. Also about the time you run out of stored and unspoiled fodder for livestock, and so have a feast instead of watching them starve) that are inevitably sliding-back to quasi-secularism (to the extent that it ever left that territory). But, at least in the North, the summer solstice is a lot less remarkable than the winter one (though I'm not sure Australia's deepest winter is quite as life-obliterating as it is in much of the top half of the world, particularly for those outside the effects of the Atlantic heat-pump), so I can see a lot of "traditional" Xmas stuff not quite resonating to the same degree. What's "A Christmas Carol" without the ever-present threat of darkness and cold, especially as it symbolizes Scrooge's dying empathy and humanity? Many a paper written on this, I'm sure.
How in the world can an adult who grew up in an English speaking country not be familiar with Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol? Blows my mind.
Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" was a schooltime classic. I have seen every adaptation from childhood on. Just about all of Charles Dickens' novels has been turned into a film, mini series, and Broadway play or musical.

140 years after A Christmas Carol came out, Disney did Mickey's Christmas Carol and it was a big deal. Introducing and starring Scrooge McDuck who went on to have his own starring role on a show called DuckTales.
Many, many versions of Scrooge/A Christmas Carol. My favorite is a black & white classic starring Alistar Sim. Very solid telling of the story!
Blackadder's Christmas Carol is the absolutely hilarious and cynical best adaptation of Dickens' original, by far!
I know there are people flipping out because Mary didn't know A Christmas Carol. She's not the first Aussie reactor not to know it. I don't think the story is as well known in Australia as it is in the UK, US or Canada, so I'd cut her some slack.
Took me years, but I noticed that the phone numbers in this movie are real.. They don't have the typical "555" like fake numbers....
Charles Dickens' book about Scrooge is actually called A Christmas Carol, but some adaptations were called Scrooge instead, for some reason. The Popular episode is also an adaptation of the same book.
The ghost of Christmas Present is Carol Kane. She has been comedic actress for years. Have you seen "Princess Bride" or Adams Family movies? Or a straight version of Charles Dickens classic Christmas story "A Christmas Carol" I recommend the 1951 or 1984 version. Look them up.

You really should screen one of the classic film adaptations of Dickens' tale.
