They never explain in the movies how Doc and Marty met, but in commentaries and interviews creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale said that Marty broke into Doc's garage and was so taken by all the cool gadgets, especially Doc's giant amp.

@@thamoose2179 I always kinda assumed everybody in town knew "Crazy Doc Brown" and Marty was just the only one interested in his experiments. I also assumed that Marty asked him to build the amp for his band. Though, it does make sense that the Doc might need a large amp for any kind of sound based experiments, however, we never see him preforming any sound experiments which is why I assumed the amp was built at Marty's request.

This movie is taught in film school as an example of an absolutely perfect movie script. This is one of the few series where watching the sequels is totally worth it

The Clocktower scene is also studied for its flawless editing. It's a masterclass in tension building, comedic beats, clearly informing the audience of the geography of the scene, and executing a satisfactory/exhilarating payoff. It may be one of the most perfectly edited action sequences in movie history. That scene isn't just remembered because it occurs in such a memorable movie ... the movie itself is so memorable partly because of how well that scene is executed.

BTTF and My Cousin Vinny are two films that have close to perfect scripts! My Cousin Vinny because of how realistic the trial procedures are, it's shown in law classes! BTTF is shown for the reason you said, it really is close to perfect. Not much wasted dialogue and every scene is worth watching.

Marty: "I have a time machine, I have all the time I want!" Also Marty: "Alright, 10 minutes oughta do it."

The PlayStation 3 game of Back to the Future is cannon and I think young Doc bumped into Marty's grandfather and some how that acquaintance continued to Marty. By the way the video game has used script and story from what would have been Back to the Future 4 but I think Michael was becoming sick or something caused the film to be placed in Limbo.

The guy you said resembled John Hamm was actually Huey Lewis. It was he and his band that recorded Power of Love, the song that Marty and his band were playing. For those who knew this, the comment "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is, of course, funny coming from the guy who actually sang the song.

How Doc & marty met is never covered, but the director said he figured Marty'd hear about with the crazy scientist in the neighborhood with a garage full of cool experiments so he snuck in to take a peek, got caught and the two bonded over both feeling like outcasts, and Doc gave Marty a part time gig running errands and taking care of the dog when he's away. This is somewhat implied at the beginning, Doc calling Marty at his own house, Marty using Doc's equipment as it was his own and knowing the dog's name, and the principal asking if he's still hanging around "that nutcase" Doc Brown.

Also, when you think about it, with all the time paradoxes and whatnot that come with time travel, after meeting Marty in 1955 there's no way Doc wouldn't have sought him out and befriended him when he was eventually born.

Very feasible and very on par with the times. I and am sure many many others just assumed this. Lol, maybe why none of us questioned how they met when the movie was actually out.

One thing I learned from reading the book that I never noticed while watching: The mall is called TWIN PINES MALL in the future. When Marty runs over the pine tree leaving the barn, the mall is now called LONE PINE MALL when he returns to the future.😂❤

The same thing happened to me. I did not notice the change in the movie when I watched it for the first time. Then I read the book. Then I re-watched the movie and saw the “change.” Incidentally, in the first book (Part 1) the term “gigawatts” is spelled correctly. But in the novelizations of Parts 2 and 3, it is incorrectly spelled “jigowatts.” For those who do not know, “giga” means billion. A gigawatt is a billion watts, 1,000,000,000.

The original writers of the show worked on a comic book series that explains several aspects of the movies. Marty as as a boy was dared to break into the docs house by some bullies, when he did he had to navigate the docs booby traps which impressed the doc who hired Marty as an assistant

@@neil2444 Correct, it's a time paradox, a loop. In the new timeline Doc read the letter and of course is aware of that at a certain point in his life he would meet Marty again. He had to pretend he didn't know him when they met for "the 1st time", in order to keep the loop closed. But then of course BttF2 happens, and things get very complicated with multiple overlapping time loops.

The joke about Johnny B. Good is that Marvin Barry called his relative, CHUCK Barry so he could listen - Chuck Barry actually wrote the song and released it in 1958 - hence Chuck Barry wrote this groundbreaking rock song (which was arguably the first rock song, atleast in the mind of any guitarist) with help from Marty.

Um, no. Various forms of music, including the original hip hop were intermixing since the 40s. For example, the black bands playing hip hop were influenced by Benny Goodman and swing. There were also influences such as country and R&B, which led to rockabilly. Young people, both white & black, had been listening to to others music for a while before Elvis made an appearance. Little Richard is a good example. What made Elvis famous is that he was a white performer who imitated a black style on stage.

When I was in the U.S. Air Force training school our instructor would show us a schematic diagram and ask us what part had broken. If we couldn't think of the right answer, we'd usually respond...It must be the Flux Capacitor. He'd snap back that it doesn't exist. We'd all be laughing!

I was working at a Target and sometimes we would jokingly get on the walkie and call one of our team leads or managers (LODs) and ask them "Do we have flux capacitors"? or "what aisle are the flux capacitors in"? we would then wait to see what they would say. I cousin of mine used to work at an auto parts store and would pretend that a customer was looking for some flux capacitors and ask his manager. the manager would fall for it right away.

Wow, shocked that Mary knows Freaks & Geeks!! It only lasted one season and most people have completely forgotten about it. Definitely a show that deserved more seasons

That doesn't jive, because even in the 80s there were bottles that required bottle cap removers. I was a kid in the 80s and remember machines still around that sold the glass bottles and had the cap remover built in.

This movie came out in 1985 and Marty would have been older than I was at the time. He would have been exposed to glass bottles with metal bottle caps and the machines or cap remover.

coming from a broken family nothing warms my heart more than the idea of going back in time and fixing everything. The ending where Marty's parents are looking over him and Jennifer is just so beautiful. Absolutely love this film

The first time I rewatched this as an adult, I was struck by the same realization Marty has in the movie - the fact that our Parents are/were just like us. They were once kids with dreams. And so often, life and time seem to fly by, and many of our dreams go unfulfilled. We need reminders, to stop and appreciate, and make the most of the days we are given!

They are many others rock n roll stars before him like Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry (the guy who talk through the phone while Marty playing the guitar), Richie Valens. Chuck Berry was the Father of Rock n Roll and it was his song that Marty sing.

Your “Jon Hamm” guy is Huey Lewis. One sign of a great film is that we see new things on repeat viewings. I’ve seen this 100 times but this is the first time I’ve noticed; Marty hits Biff hard at the halfway point but he’s not knocked out, unlike what his dad at the climax…I cry every time it occurs 😊

if you notice Docs house was huge when Marty went back to 1955 and doc learned his invention worked, Doc then basically spent his entire fortune building that time machine.

I adore "Back To The Future". If I ever have kids, I'll raise them properly with timeless classics like this cinematic masterpiece.

Doc took a chance on the letter because he knew the timeline had already been changed thanks to George standing up to Biff.

Another great reaction video and looking forward to many more :) Fun Fact: The flying car scene at the end was a gag more than anything, and caused headaches when the studio green-lit a sequel LOL [how they were going to make it work beyond a 10sec gag scene, make it look more real, and how to do more scenes with a flying car in the sequel - they never intended a sequel and esp did not envisioned having to do a flying car VFX for more than the few seconds they did it at the end of Part 1]

If I recall, Zemeckis and Gale wanted to leave it as a stand-alone but UA said we’re doing a sequel with or without you. So rather than having their story ruined by someone else, they were in, but asked to shoot II & III back to back.

This movie really is a double period piece now. It's nostalgic for the 50s and the 80s at once.

Mary, with disgusted look on her face: "It's a pretty judgmental family." Also Mary: Spends the next 32 minutes of the reaction judging everyone and everything she sees. Glad you enjoyed the movie again though. It was for sure one of my favorites when I was a kid. Got me through some rough times.

Fun fact: The original time machine was supposed to be a fridge. They abandoned the idea because they didn't want little kids locking themselves in fridges trying to re enact the film. The car (a mobile time machine) is a stroke of genius

And said fridge wasn't powered by a bolt of lightning for the return trip. Instead they harnessed the power of an atomic bomb test out in the desert. Spielberg held on to that idea of a fridge getting nuked in the desert with someone inside and used it for Indiana Jones 4.

Yes, Doc met Marty in 1955 but he couldn't tell Marty about their previous adventures until 1985 so he just befriended him and became a mentor so things could unfold the way they are supposed to.

You should definitely watch the next two parts, Mary!!! The Back to the Future films taken in as an adult is a complete movie experience, that is incomplete if you skip the other films.

Biff met his density - George McFly's fist. So fun and delightful how you related to all the characters. Great Scott! looking forward to a Part 2 and 3 reaction!

Fun fact: When Marty is auditioning with his band for the school dance, the guy who you said looked like John Hamm is actually Huey Lewis. He was pretty famous in the 80's with his band, Huey Lewis and The News. Lots of great music! He even had a couple songs in this movie. Matter of fact, the song that Marty and his band was playing WAS one of Huey's from the movie! So it's even more funny that Huey said that they were 'just too darn loud'. 😀

On Netflix there is an episode of The Movies That Made Us dealing with Back to the Future.. the original method of getting home was insane. Very well worth a watch imho.

Robert Zemeckis had an explanation for how the Doc and Marty became friends, where Marty broke into the Doc's lab and was fascinated by all the random inventions, which is kind of represented in the opening scene. But you weren't the only one who was confused by the lack of an in-story explanation. John Mulaney did a great bit on this in his Netflix special.

Reactions to this are always fun! Another face you might recognize is Billy Zane as one of Biff's mates, who would be a memorable jerk in "Titanic" a dozen years later. 😀 There was a nightmare behind the scenes that made the movie turning out as well as it did a bit of a miracle. They originally cast Eric Stoltz as Marty and filmed with him for a few weeks before coming to the conclusion that he wasn't the right fit for the part. They had circled Michael J. Fox in casting but he was on a popular sitcom at the time and the scheduling wasn't conducive to his taking part in "Back to the Future" but the producers threw money at everyone, and Michael J. Fox killed himself filming both things for a while on an accelerated schedule for the movie because he had to reshoot all the scenes that Stoltz shot. He's said he doesn't remember anything from that period apart from being really damn' tired all the time.

Young Lea Thompson was beautiful. I had the biggest crush on her for years. Ever since "Jaws 3" in 3D.

Since I have memories, my brother and I have been watching this saga at least once a year every year. It is amazing. Thank you so much from Spain, Mary. Watching this video made me rewatching it again XD.

In the Bullwinkle & Rocky cartoon series there was a dog who owned the "Way Back Machine" that allowed him to travel back in time. The dog's name was Mr. Peabody, the same as the farmer with the pine trees.

According to the writers the origin of Doc and Marty's friendship was for years, Marty was told that Doc Brown was dangerous, a crackpot, a lunatic. So, being a red-blooded American teenage boy, age 13 or 14, he decided to find out just why this guy was so dangerous. Marty snuck into Doc's lab, and was fascinated by all the cool stuff that was there. When Doc found him there, he was delighted to find that Marty thought he was cool and accepted him for what he was. Both of them were the black sheep in their respective environments. Doc gave Marty a part-time job to help with experiments, tend to the lab, tend to the dog, etc. and that's the origin of their friendship.

As most everyone knows, Michael J. Fox replaced Eric Stoltz after Stoltz had already been filming for 6 weeks. What not as many people know is that the hiring of Fox required that the actress who was set to play his gf (Melora Hardin) had to be fired. The producers felt she was too tall to play alongside the rather short Fox

You didn't show it, but around 28:26 here is one of my favorite easter eggs. The sign for the mall says "Lone Pine Mall", but at the start of the movie 5:46 you see it reads "Twin Pines Mall". That is because when Marty went back in time, he ran over one of the pine trees.

Ah, so that's why I've never come across it in any Van Halen songs. I've always been a bit confused by that, especially since this movie was my first exposure to the name (I was 8 when I saw it in the theater).

Hey Mary. The Doc DOESN'T know he's going to die after seeing the video. Why? Because, if you recall, he waved his hands to get Marty to stop recording prior to telling him that he (the Doc) stole the plutonium (he didn't want his confession recorded). The shooting then happens with the video camera still turned off.

I've probably seen this movie over 100 times since I've been little. I'll be 36 next month and I still end up watching this if it comes on. I have a lot of memories and nostalgia when I think about this movie. It's definitely one of my "death bed" movies. The sequels are both amazing too.

One interesting thing to note is at the beginning of the movie, the mall is Twin Pines Mall. As he goes to the past, he hits a tree. When he comes back to the future, the sign says Lone Pine Mall.

Did you notice the name of the mall he went to? The name was twin pines mall, but when Marty went back in time and the farmer shot at him, he ran over 1 or the 2 pine trees. When he went back to 1985, the mall was then called Lone Pine Mall.

Today we can probably assume that Dr. Brown had ADHD and that’s why he always was in a rush and impulsive with his inventions and caused him to fail a lot. Thanks to Marty, Doc found focus in his life and could find happiness.

I don't think ADHD was even a recognized neurophysical disorder back when this script was written. Yes, his character traits are very typical for ADHD, and they are based on the classical "mad professor" trope. But Doc. Brown is a fictional character. I don't think you can diagnose a fictional character if the author didn't specifically follow the diagnostics manual when they write them. For an ADHD diagnosis, you need to inquire into the patients childhood. Doc brown doesn't have a childhood, he only exists within these movies, as a middle-aged man.

Fun Fact, Mary: If you listen carefully, the *sound* of the time machine is the same as Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder in the first Star Wars! The special effects were done by the same company too - Industrial Light & Magic!

Yes. The original scripts were based on the three stages of Freudian psychoanalysis. As the “Doc” helps Marty work with his psyche and intergenerational trauma. Much more explicit in the first drafts of the script. So the first stage involves strengthening the superego (represented by father) so it can better work against the ID (base impulses, Biff) but he has to deal with the Oedipal complex 😂 to do that. Not kidding. This was the basis of the films inspiration.

The first script began with Marty being too scared to send in a demo of his bands music and his girlfriend saying something along the lines of: “well Marty my therapists says that our fears often have to do with family patterns” The scripts settled on the idea that Marty, the Ego, is unable to step down from being called chicken. And that is the test of his development throughout the films.

Wow!! I forgot about those old-fashioned soda machines that dispensed glass bottles and had an attached bottle cap remover. This was before twist off caps were invented. There was one in my old neighborhood grocery store.

What a joy to watch you react to this. I've seen this a few-dozen times with other reactors, but you are so expressive that it's like the first time. For instance, I think the earth's gravitational pull was hilarious the way Christopher Lloyd delivered it, but it just seems to pass over other reactors' heads. in those time, ppl was not effraid of pedophiles and ppl trusted each other so the way ppl think was different so weird friendship happend all the time! as a kid, i was friend with my babysitters neighbor, i was like 5 and he was like 50 and he was fixing everything and it amazed me so each day, i was goiing in his garage with him and help him and observe him, kind of like marty and doc...those kind of friendship was normal...

I lived right up the hill from the mall where they shot the opening of the movie. It's the Puente Hills Mall in California. The Twin Pines Mall sign is on display inside the mall, on the first floor.

The fact that Marty and Doc were the inspiration for Rick and Morty is what drew me to start watching _Rick and Morty_ in the first place. I loved this trilogy as a kid. You know, the first time I watched the trilogy, for some reason, I watched the second and third movies before watching the first. 😅

The "John Hamm" looking guy was Huey Lewis, the lead singer for the namesake band that recorded the song "Power of Love" which of course Marty was playing. Love the reaction video. Thank you Mary.
