Bill & Joe Taste Ndea (Nauclea latifolia)

Tasting an African fruit from the coffee family called Ndea for the first time. I would eat it again, not bad.

    Sounds like the seed is similar to Dragon Fruit...but smaller, so your idea of slicing thin and seeding from there sounds like the right idea. Thanks for sharing Joe!

    I would make sure you have your identification right first. Since your trees are growing in the wild they may not be as good as the one we ate. The fruit was a specific selection with good qualities. Always take a small sample the first time just incase you have an allergy or the ID is wrong.

    I'm not sure but I suspect there are no inedible fruit that resemble Ndea. The wild crop might be inferior to the domesticated form we have in HI.

I always believe that there is no such thing which is grown naturally and is useless. By the way Nice Channel and great videos.

    Perhaps I have a different variety here. Our annual high is around 88 and the low around 50. It was in the low 50's here last night and no problem, the 20 plants left in the nursery are thriving. Are these temperatures you indicate the high or the low reading? If they are low readings I suspect the decline is from causes other than weather. If these are high readings then yes, that is definitely too cold.

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    @GreenGardenGuy1

    Yes, the nursery is filled with seedlings. The seed is small as dust and deeply embedded in the flesh. To grow it I had to cut the fruit into razor thin slices and lay them on the surface of soil allowing the flesh to decompose before the seeds germinated. If you used a microscope to plant or planted the flesh then you planted this fruit.

    I planted the seeds this evening by slicing the fruit in thin sheets, laying them on seed mix and covering them with a bit of mix to keep the fruit flies off. Usually when I grow seed this fine it's in a berry and I plant it whole. If it is clean dry seed I spread it on the surface and keep it moist. This is completely different. We will see what happens. Aloha

    I've removed seeds from many different fruits over the years but never saw anything like this one. If you have a technique for removal of seeds fine as dust, firmly embedded in flesh, I would like to hear about it. I used the standard old method of allowing the flesh to ferment and decompose around the seeds. Can't think of any other method.

    Thanks for the video. I want that ! I am planning to plant this in my garden in West-Africa. The seeds are for sale from seeds gallery. But does anyone have an idee how long it takes to get a fruit-bearing shrub from seeds? I prefer to plant fruit trees I will see to fruition before I die (2030).

    I grow almost everything from seed because much of what I had isn't easy to find as a plant in HI. Time isn't much of a concern, the dead don't eat. Under4 the best conditions the plant will produce some fruit in less than 5 years. It is an early fruiting shrub.

    I never used that name for Nauclea latifolia. We used the Africa name Ndea for the fruit. I had a crop in the nursery for a while. I put the last one in the orchard. The fruit was good but I question how much it likes my location. The leaves get rather distressed during the winter. I suspect more heat and drier weather are to it's liking. Aloha

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    @GreenGardenGuy1

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yesterday was the first time I ever heard of this fruit. I did reserve 25% of it to plant. If you noticed from the video the seeds are like dust and embedded in the flesh. Removal is nearly impossible. I cut the fruit in thin slices and planted the slices. Because of the seed issues I will probably never have this seed for sale. If all goes well in a year or so I will have some plants in the nursery.

  • @GreenGardenGuy1

    @GreenGardenGuy1

    4 жыл бұрын

    I am uncertain as to what information you seek. Do you mean, in what season do you start the seeds? The fruit ripens in July so I extract the seeds and plant in July. Currently the plants are less than 1/2"high in the pot. I suspect it will take a year or more to grow a plant large enough to go to the field. When they are large enough I will transplant them no matter what the season is.

    Tramadol is a narcotic. I can't find any evidence that the Ndea has a narcotic quality. I see a huge list of medicinal values but nothing showing it is a narcotic level pain killer. This is new information to me, can you validate this?
