My Secret RARE Fruit Tree, PAWPAWS!!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Pawpaws are my secret go to fruit. In fact you may have never heard of them, but pawpaws are a fruit you should have in your permaculture garden. These aren't the kind of fruits you can buy in a store, in fact I don't know of a place that I can ever buy them. The only way to for me to eat pawpaws is if I grow them myself!
Thanks for the kind words and support 😁🐕❤️

As a First Nations person from canada thank you everyone for replanting these trees across the US and Canada, it was heart breaking when the american Chestnut was almost wiped out, and when the Scycamores and Redwoods almost went extinct too due to the lumber industry. Keep planting native species everyone :)

I just planted two little paw paws in my back yard. I just learned that the Zebra Swallowtail butterfly larvae depend on paw paw leaves as their main source of food. Paw paws fill an important niche in the natural world of which we are a part. These trees are surely a gift from mother earth. Thanks for your post!

James -- I am IN LOVE with Paw Paws!!! I grew up on my grandparents farm in southern Indiana and we had a Paw Paw forest! They were plentiful in the fall and we would eat our weight in the fruit! When I was little Grandpa and I would have seed contests to see who could spit the seed the furthest. And at the same time we were contributing to building the forest. After graduation, I moved to Ohio and through the years I tried many, many times to transplant seedlings from the farm to my home, but none ever made it more than 6 months. But, happy to say I have a 3 year old tree now and it's growing well. I don't know what the variety is, but I garden a lot and hope it is enough to pollinate my beloved tree. I am a misplaced Hoosier gal and no one in the state of Ohio that I have come to know, realize the Paw Paw is this state's fruit. Except for those folks in southern Ohio near Snowden Lake. Those folks can grow Paw Paws and they celebrate their gems at an annual festival in September. I could go on and on with my love and stories of Paw Paws... I am more appreciative of your channel and what you do and who you are. I respect your passion for growing good food and protecting mother nature along the way. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I think you are terrific and my Grandpa would have been proud to have met you. And Tuck, too!

Just LOVE fresh ripe Paw Paw fruit. We live in Maryland and kayak up and down the Eastern seaboard where we often find wonderful ripe Paw Paw along our paddles! They thrive in the shady moist under story areas in our region AND provide leaves for the gorgeous Zebratail butterflies whose caterpillars feed exclusively on Paw Paw leaves. I recall in the Autumn of 2017 when we paddled near Mattawoman Creek in Southern Maryland and landed on a shaded beach with Paw Paws falling all over! An hour later, with our sacks full of ripe Paw Paw fruit, we headed home happy! Paw Paw is like the best tastes and flavors of warm banana and mango and papaya in one spoonful.

Here in Australia we have related butterflies called the "green triangle butterfly" and the "pale blue triangle' that lay their eggs on our custard apples. I'm super keen to see if my new pawpaw trees get used as a foodplant for the same butterflies. In Papua they have the beautiful "purple spotted swallowtail" that lays eggs on the custard apples so I'll get to test out the pawpaw with that one too :)

You can grow paw paws in southern Ontario. There's a thicket of them at an arboretum. The raccoons love them. I go gather what I can and make custard with them. I tried to grow some but they died due to competition from other plants and too much shade. For better pollination I've read you hang scraps of meat to rot and attract flies that then pollinate the flowers

About 4 year's ago I discovered a couple cluster's at our new homestead and didn't know what they were and didn't get them and later found out we have pawpaw trees on a bluff. Now I know I was lucky that I even saw those 2 small cluster's because every I think I'm going to have a bumper crop and get to try pawpaw's and so far late frost destroys the bloom's and I find them brown and dead. I've got to figure a way to protect the blooms next year. I'm miffed that these early warm springs are causing my trees to bud and bloom too early and then a cold stretch happens and freezes the blooms and maybe some very small fruit cluster's and I'm in Kentucky. Nice looking pawpaw tree with lots of fruit you have there.👍

I live in Maryland, where we have paw paws growing in the wild. If anyone is passing through, check out great falls. Or in Richmond Virginia on james river, there is a paw paw island. The deer can’t eat the leaves, but they love the fruit, and replant them everywhere.

Nice. We got lucky and had a grouping of pawpaw trees grow naturally in our backyard right along a creek. We didn’t even know it until recently because they don’t grow fruit for a few years. But these trees grow like weeds it feels. Like the more you have the more it fosters growth.

My husband has his phone number but he feels bad to call him. Luckily he gave a branch of the tree to us. It’s growing but too small. I don’t know how long we’ll have to get fruits from this tree. He gave us a lot and I was enjoying them so much. I’m so happy I watched your video. I’m from Niagara Falls , Ontario, Canada. I wish I could be a Neighbor to get some fruits. The main reason they aren't sold like others is because they bruise easily and they don't last more than just a few days at most once they are ripe. This makes shipping them EXTREMELY difficult.

Ok James. I might be able to blow your mind I am in Ohio 6a/6b line and my property backs to undeveloped park land that borders past that on a state scenic waterway. Hiking around there,I found the odd maroon flowers and I checked Google Lens to identify pawpaw (there are hundreds of trees!) Now I can't un-see them. I collected wild fruits and saved seeds this year to start my own. Just saw a vlog for rooting cuttings of the same. But in the woods, it was really cool. Every place there was a patch of pawpaw trees, there was also a buckeye tree right there as well, without fail. Nature's companion planting.

Groundhog, raccoon, squirrel and possum go after paw paw fruit, also. so get it before they do. you can shake the tree and the ripe ones come down, also. Paw Paw is my favorite fruit in the world. Grows all along the EASTERN USA and other areas. Zebra Swallowtail butterflies need PAW PAW trees to survive - so if you see Zebra Swallowtail Butterflies - you know you have Paw Paw trees nearby. Paw Paws are often in parks and Parkways.

Pawpaws were part of some groundbreaking cancer research done by Dr Jerry McLaughlin at Purdue University in Indiana. “It killed just about every cancer cell we tested,” Oberlies said. (Nicholas) However, the drug failed to reach markets and go beyond laboratory research. It's interesting to read about that research. My brother was great friends with Dr Jerry and took care of his cabin in the wood near my brother's house. To this day, my brother gets loaded up with pawpaws from their research trees. We love pawpaws.
