Bigorexia: Never Buff Enough | BBC Newsbeat

Ойын-сауық

Thousands of men are living with an extreme body image disorder known as bigorexia. Experts estimate one-in-ten men training in gyms in the UK may have the condition. It's been compared to anorexia in reverse - where men become obsessed with putting on muscle. It can lead to depression, steroid abuse and in extreme cases, death.
Newsbeat meets men living with the condition and those who have had their lives turned upside down because of it.

    @@JayMoney-hd1jl Is that from "Lone survivor" lol. it's a good movie. This quote comes from the military mindset. This quote specifically comes from The UDT Navy Seal Diver ethos (The Frogmen). The whole" keep going until you die" is nothing more than military mindset propaganda to keep soldiers from quitting the fight. It is short sighted and only serves one purpose. Outside of that reason for which it was created, it is useless and dangerous and as such should be forgotten; or at least evolved to fit a different use. What it has in absolutely motivating testosterone FUCK YEAH MURICA, " lets kick some ass!" it lacks in real world wisdom for anyone else. It is a wonderful mindset to have to keep you alive in the worst of times, but it fails when there is no war to fight. What happens when you have no motivation or reason to "push forward and fight"? What happens when the worst you have to do is get a 9-5 job and just make enough money to feed the kids? What happens when survival is no longer an immediate day-to-day worry? i'll let you figure that out. I agree with the idea that in order to become the best at something you need to be obsessed with it. "time is god's currency"- Me For instance, Marco Pierre White (FYI, The famous chef that was the youngest ever to win a michelin star and was mentor of Gordon Ramsay) said he worked 16 hours a day, 6 days a week in the kitchen to perfect his passion. But he ,after winning the michelin stars and becoming the best known chef in the world, said he was still not satisfied and even quit professionally cooking for a while because it had become boring to him. long story short, you can never be satisfied with acquiring things and emotions. the only time the race is exciting is when the race is still happening. When you hit the finish line, then what? You're not done with life, you didn't die. what next then? Stop looking for finish lines and enjoy the race. For there are no finish lines in life except for the ones we humans have made. For every mountain, there is a valley. Just enjoy the moment and try to learn to enjoy the race.

The way his eyes looked you could tell his mind was racing crazy in a place that doesn’t stop screaming. He’s going to think about it at work and it will be at the front of his mind the entire day. I know how real this state of mind is. I was in the army and got posted overseas for 12 months, with nothing to do in my spare time but go to the gym. The whole time I was doing it, I’d look in the mirror and couldn’t see any gains. I stopped lifting once I got home. At the end of those 12 months I had a picture taken of my physique, I look back at that photo now and realise how good my body looked at the time, seems crazy that I couldn’t see it back then.

It's called 'bigorexia' for a reason. Saying he looks so good, is similar to saying to a girl who is starving herself with anorexia and being overly critical she looks good. Even though she may end up dying because of the way she's treating her body. It's not okay and feeds the illness.

    i dont know how u are rn dude but I hope u are able to find a way out of it. I used to feel bad about my body as the more I critiqued myself in the mirror. But one day I really looked at myself and saw my stretch marks, striations, etc. And then I remebered how I started off and what truly drove me to workout. I was disatisfied about my body and my mental state so I decided to make a change. I fell in love with the soreness and the pain and the conitnual improvement. So now after I am in the best shape in my life and still continuing this journey, why should I feel sad? I should feel proud about my body and cherish it. I so started to love it and now I am making some of the best progress I have made.

    +Chris Helheim it is not sad because of what you think, but because they can't achieve want they want(because they don't have the support and the genetics).. it is a dream.. you want to be big enough to success on the biggest bodybuilding compatition you don't care at all about others opinion of your body.. you just care about your dream personal i don't have the same dreams because i think it is not worth it for me but that doesn't mean that i can't understand someone who have that dream and call him that he suffer from bigorexia... so i suffer from doctorexia too? because i want to be a doctor? hah!

  • @ChrisHelheim

    @ChrisHelheim

    8 жыл бұрын

    +giannhg13 You do realise those two can't even be compared? :D Because you becoming a doctor can't hurt anyone (besides your financial status...I'm a student too...I feel ya man) but him not seeing himself right and being ignorant towards how great he actually looks may scar him for life? It actually did, when he said he can't look at him self and is disgusted by what he sees. Because when I see him I see nothing to be disgusted about :D he looks fucking great, better than I do or will probably. It's one thing objectively looking at your self or your actions and being reasonable about it, but looking at something without realising how good it is and what you've done is just not healthy. Your view becomes distorted and you'll never be satisfied with your work which can lead to deeper mental issues. I'm not a bodybuilder myself, I've decided to follow the path of martial arts, but I find the mind of a bodybuilder interesting and sad. Yes, the point of the sport (and the dream as you've said it) is to become bigger than the guy next to you but it has to be done right mentally and physically. I can even understand the state of mind of realising you've reached your genetic potential and you need that extra enhancement so you turn to other substances, but neglecting the facts and being blind towards what's in front of you is just sad.

    +Chris Helheim Average mentality.. there are hundreds of thousands of people who cycle on and off steroids and do fine; either these guys ABUSED THEM or they had a pre-existing condition. Of course; you'd rather kill for that body because 90% of the population don't want to work for it. so what if he's not satisified? it means he wants to be better.. just like how a millionaire wants to become richer? I suppose you should make up some sort of disorder for that too, Richorexia? lol?

  • @ChrisHelheim

    @ChrisHelheim

    8 жыл бұрын

    +the pain I usually tend not to reply too much on the comments and keep my opinion for myself; not getting enagaged in useless arguments :D but here I think as if a lot of people misinterpreted the message of the video. People do cycle on/off the gear and do fine, I do support that part of your comment. But a lot of people (including me) do work their asses off for great bodies but are at the same time aware of their progress, achievements, potential and what will it take to make that step further. But being unsatisfied and wanting more is the secondary ''problem'' of this video, of course we are all hungry for more but here is a much bigger picture. A millionaire is not disgusted by what he had made throughout the years of hard work. Howerever this guy, regardless of his achievements, can't stand to look himself in the mirror and sees himself as forever a small guy, which is far, far from what he should actually see; far from the truth. Like I said before, we can all be obsessed by certain things; bodybuilding, painting, music, money, but if we get to a state of mind which distorts the view of that reality then that's not right. We should be hungry for more and achieve more, neverthless. But we should aswell be aware of our state in a reasonable fashion, be objective and mindful, not blind. He did say, later on, in the video that he's working on his ''condition'' and that he realises such behaviour is leading him down a wrong path, so props to him. I'm not the one to judge, I have no right to, but many people will mutilate their bodies and change them in extreme ways because they're disgusted by what they see in the mirror. In many, many cases they are completely wrong. I do consider that to be a problem, not only in bodybuilding.

Plenty of stress on the body and plenty of health problems to have in the future.

    @@Penelope416 Well, for one he looks too big . Unless he is a 5'6 manlet, only about 1% of men can reach that size naturally at low bodyfat. Also he has huge traps and delts, as well as oversized quads. All signs of possible usage. Also he talks about some of his muscle groups lagging behind others. Generally this doesn't happen that much to natural lifters. If i knew his weight/height/bf% I could easily do some calculations to prove he is fake natty. Besides using steroids is a crime, so who would like to admit to committing crime? And for your information 90% of the men on a fitness magazine are on steroids. How much muscle you can build depends on your genetic testosterone levels, if you wanna go bigger, you have to hop on some steroids. No amount of hard work is going to compensate for a lack of hormones.

    This video is 7 years old and things still really haven't changed. I got into fitness a few years ago and enjoyed seeing the transformation process over time, but I don't believe it contributed all that much to my happiness. After two years of fully committing to a lifestyle of fitness and muscle gain, I suddenly got bored and worked out less and less frequently, becoming more loose with my diet. These days, I've never managed to regain that same kind of commitment I initially had, but I've learned to make peace with it. If nothing else, it's given me tools to manage my daily fitness and health to a moderate degree, but I think I'm much happier not feeling the need to constantly compare myself to how I looked yesterday, entering a constant cycle of pushing myself further and harder than is necessary. Some people I know are still on it, and though they look great, I can't say that we've stayed close since - maybe because their obsession with their physique is taking so much time away from their social lives. I believe everyone has a right to pursue whatever passions in life they desire, but my only condition would be that it's something that provides real meaning and joy for them, rather than something they think they need to aspire to.

    Half of the problem is the secretive side of body building. Top level bodybuilders will claim they don't use steroids/growth hormones/ diuretics/insulin until they're blue in the face, this leads teenagers to believe all this is achievable by just drinking protein shakes and working out. Once they really become involved in the lifestyle and discover the truth a few tablets or a few needles a week doesn't seem that much more of a sacrifice. Next minute they are pumped full of hormones and eating 7 meals a day.

Im sure there are body builders who claim to be natty, but the most popular ones like sadik, big ramy, etc are sponsored by companies that promote steroids and anyone who follows a bodybuilder should know that they use steroids. Also, no disrespect to them, because its not automatic muscle when you take steroids. Thank you, dont mean to kill the mood, but just an opinion from a teen who actually follows bodybuilders.
