Biggest lithium battery installation ever on a sailboat? - Episode 105

Sailing Dauntless (on KZread) is a 2017 Lagoon 450 which was hurricane damaged in Tortola, at exactly the same time as Parlay, which is also a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450. Ty, Kim and Syd describe what it was like to rebuild her, and also undertake probably the largest lithium battery installation ever on a sailboat. They go with Tesla batteries, and have added 5000W of solar to charge their huge battery bank, which supplies the boat with power through their 15kW Victron inverter!

When I watched you party on the Super Yachats I thought just that your a party guy but I've changed my mind. You are a very good interviewer and extremely knowledgeable about this. I'm a old Navy Photographer 1970 to 75 and a long time sailor. At 70 now I'm now going to travel in a 2017 F350 dually with a Cirrus Camper and I'm going to travel from Florida to Alaska. I did restore a 1978 VW WESTFALIA CAMPER and after that I realized I need more room for this old body.

Nothing excessive about 5kw of pv. This is the future. The way that it works together is the innovative step. Smart systems that tell all the compressors to 'share' the load and NOT kick in at the same time etc. Control and monitoring systems need to be developed. And redundancy is the key. A single massive inverter, not idea in salty lightning risk environments. Multiple strings of pv, independent supply systems will make it more robust. You guys and others bringing up live-aboard standards to modern house like lifestyles is a big important step. You are raising the bar and should feel really proud of your contribution to the lifestyle. And your learnings and mistakes will be important experiences for those coming after you. The gear is getting cheaper and better. I'm so glad to finally see decent pv and battery systems being employed. A kW of wind would be good too.. I hope you have a way of shutting down and isolating some of your solar for when it fails, and it will, big fire risk in that much dc in those environments. But how you manage the wiring, connections, and equipment failures will lead the way for others. Dont trust anything, develop emergency procedures for arcs everywhere. Isolators everywhere, and extinguishers. Great to see. And you made me cry. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm 70 yours old and I did not miss a thing, I've done it all with few regrets and I don't feel like there was something I should have done. I don't own a sail boat and never have but I never wanted to either but I have owned several airplanes. I live on the Gulf coast and have sailed but it was something I never was really interested in doing however I enjoy watching people like this and their love affair with sailing and sailboats. I worked on several large sailboats doing repairs in the 80's that were equipped with the Pathfinder Sailboat Engines. These engines were in cramped spaces and the wiring on these high dollar boats was a nightmare ,wire color would change several times in one run. Anyway, life has not passed me by and I tried or did it all.

Boat yards are boat life, every 12 months or so, haul out, anti foul, service to props, shafts bearings, pumps, standing rig, running rig, sails, engines BUT as others have said "there's nothing better than messing around with sail boats". Great interview with the Dauntless crew.

I am one of them guys sitting around saying I can do this! Matter fact not only do I think I can do it, but I think I am prob inflicted just as bad as these dudes! Spreadsheets, numbers and algorithms and we speaking my language! I am a mechanic turned nerd that decided to go back to school for software and web systems management at 48 years old. It is by far the greatest thing I ever did. Been one of the most fulfilling things of my life! A passion you might say lol. I have another dream turning passionately in my mind and that is buying a sailboat and transitioning to a live aboard in time. I am actually going and looking at a sailboat next weekend up on Lake Michigan. A hunter 31. A boat that I can afford while not draining our savings and we can take the next few years learning how to sail it and learning what life aboard a sailboat looks like. But one thing that me and these folks have in common, I would pay 25k for a boat and put 12k into the battery/inverter/solar system, before I would just buy a boat that was bigger for 40k. Not saying that's what they did, I'm just saying that power means as much to me as it does them. I found the tesla batteries, the quattro, and the solar panels but I could use a rough draft of the connections. Nevertheless I prob need to jump on this dudes crew and get some knowledge!!!

Wow… Very impressive electrical. And quite an amazing story. There is great value in knowing you’re possessions inside and out. Whether that be a boat, a vehicle, a home, etc… Investing your own blood sweat & tears into something.. it makes it part of you.. part of your soul. And that always results in it having more personal value as well as being far more appreciated and enjoyed. It’s great seeing wonderful people going after their dreams… having the faith in themselves to stick it out through tough times… then being rewarded with getting to live their dream life. Truly happy for you guys. And I have to point something out… Colin was part of your inspiration, as he’s been for many of us.. but you took that inspiration and then inadvertently created an inspirational story of your own. You have become inspirations yourselves. It’s great how life works sometimes. Thank you for sharing and it would be awesome to see you out there on the water one day. 🤙🏻

their boat will make a really interesting case study about how those automotive batteries stand up to marine conditions. I've been really curious about that question, but so far the few tidbits you could find on the internet about such projects have been in their very early stages, and rarely more than a single post on a forum somewhere. So it will be really interesting to see youtubers document their longer term experience with the Tesla battery pack.

I've thought about this issue but I have no boat on which to try it. I think I would build an enclosure that would stand up to complete submerging and group the modules in banks, in aforementioned waterproof enclosures, that are small enough to manhandle if needed. All that in addition to every precaution in the book and beyond to ward off slowly advancing causes for corrosion and whatnot. Also some implementation details that possibly make or break that critical backbone...

I was thinking about this myself. Im an electrical engineer and did my Electric vehicle course before the pandemic. If you get a fire on an EV battery you don't fight it you just evacuate, when the fire service come they put a chain around the vehicle and drag it out the way then just leave it to burn its self out for the next week or so. They cant extinguish it on land, on a boat maybe use explosives to jettison your entire battery pack through the hull seems extreme but that's all i could think of that's guaranteed to work. I love Teslas, and I love what these guys have done they clearly know what their doing, I haven't got the balls to have that much lithium under me at sea though.

Any issue with those batteries and the entire boat goes up in flame. Those modules have a cooling loop that isnt being used and the BMS is assuming its used for a car application (high C rate). I personally would only put LFP's in a boat for the added safety and they are getting really cheap (~$150 per kwh for the cell).

My dream is also to be out on the water - still got no money to buy a boat, have no partner or family to share this dream with and I also have to face I might not have even 20 years left - one time I shared this on an other sailing channel and a guy reacted saying something like: forget it! buy yourself a canoe!" It didn't stop me from dreaming! Thank you again for your inspiration and sharing "like minded people" with us who are following the same spirit! ps: months ago I bought a Parlay T-shirt, my daughter, living in US received it and will bring me in June this year to Belgium! Sounds like he has a nice system. My major concern is the Tesla batteries. The cells in the Tesla banks are lithium ion cobalt. Although they have superior energy density they are susceptible to thermal runaway and catching fire. The fire once started, cant be extinguished until the combustibles are consumed. Not a problem in a car, you can pull over and get out. For a boat at sea or an airplane in flight you don’t have many options to evacuate. For this reason Lithium iron phosphate is a more desirable and the gold standard battery chemistry in these applications. The energy density is less but the safety factor vastly increased. Phosphate cell don’t catch fire even when directly shorted or when punctured. Hopefully you have multiple thermal and smoke alarms loud enough to wake the dead. An insulated steel enclosure for the battery banks that vents to the outside would also be a good idea. That way if your bank caught fire the boat would survive.
