Biden's Cognitive Health: Neurologist Explains

In this video, I discuss Joe Biden's recent behaviors and evaluate whether they may be indicative of normal aging or a potential neurocognitive disorder.
DISCLAIMER: In this video, my goal is to enhance awareness and education about neurological conditions using real world examples. I am not Biden’s physician and I have no patient-physician relationship with him. I do not make diagnoses in my videos; instead, I make observations and opinions based on my medical knowledge and publicly available information.

Someone in the comments insightfully asked about Biden's confabulation and quick temper. Here are some examples to provide evidence: Evidence of confabulation: 1. Falsely claiming he was at Ground Zero the day after 9/11. 2. Recalling conversations with leaders who had passed away years ago. 3. Biden kept telling a story suggesting that his late uncle was eaten by cannibals after his plane was shot down in World War II. Biden’s dramatic details of the story do not match the Defense Department’s official account of the plane crash. Regarding irritability, multiple news outlets have reported instances of Biden's quick temper with staff. Even when we listen to Biden's speech, he has inappropriately lashed out at people. For instance, during the debate, some of this behavior was evident, when he exhibited sudden anger seemingly out of the blue, lashing out at Trump and calling him a "sucker" and a "loser."

Thank you for this! Thank you for your courage. The US versus them mentality in this nation has got to stop. Sometimes it comes down to humanity. It's not about power. If we are to thrive as a nation, we must be honest with ourselves. People seem so worried & passionate regarding whether or not their team wins, regardless of competency. I think it's time that we as a nation, take a step back, and detangle this mentality from our consciousness. If we scrutinize our own team as rigorously as we do our opponents, I think we'll find that we are not so different. Under the waves we are all the current. Let's seek to understand the "them!" Perhaps one day they will all become "us" and we will become "them"... Together... United in understanding & compassion. ✨🤍☘️🕊️✨✨

My father went through this and it was heartbreaking. He was a highly regarded thoracic surgeon with board certifications in pathology and vascular surgery along with a stint as Midwest president of the american cancer society. We witnessed a change in gait, a propensity toward sudden anger outbursts and memory loss. Our family had to act fast into getting him into a care facility. The thought of him practicing surgery in this condition is of course absurd, however, this country is expected to accept Biden as President. Now, that's not only absurd, it's both frightening and dangerous.

This is an enormously traumatic event to ask Biden to step down, his entire life has been devoted to govt service, and this is akin to asking him to obliterate his identity. When my grandfather had to go to a care facility he went through all the phases of change: shock, disbelief, anger, negotiation, compromise, acceptance and then adoption. The arc of these stages is psychologically brutal, some cannot make it through and crash and burn, whereas others finally make it. It requires love and care and feedback and empathy along the way, yet at the same time being firm on the new direction...and not just for the good of a person being targeted, but also for the collective he or she is in. In my opinion Joe has gone through the shock and disbelief stage, and now is in the anger and negotiation stage...soon he will move into the compromise and acceptance stage. Interestingly enough these fazes also apply to the country accepting this change, as well as Jill Biden who is perhaps will be one of the greatest hinderances to Joe's acceptance Important role in moving this along with dignity and respect and empathy, yet with firm direction for the greater good will be Barack Obama

Jimmy Carter, when questioned 4 years ago, said he couldn't have managed the presidency at age 80 and opined that there should be age limits. Yes, Biden's degeneration is probably abnormal, but - just as a basic safeguard - it's probably not a good idea to have 80 yr old presidents. Or senators, or supreme court justices... I think we have a lot of elderly people in very very high positions in the US, and maybe we need across the board reform as to age limits. We do it for air traffic controllers and pilots, and I think it makes sense for very high level government positions. Maybe we could allow elderly people to serve 2 year terms in the house of representatives, but things like the Senate or the presidency are probably too critical to allow people past 80 to serve.

When the Constitution was drafted, the average life expectancy was 35 to 40 years old, (depending upon the source); therefore, during this period in history - and with fewer significantly old(er) people living in society by virtue of average life expectancy, it would be less common (although not impossible) to have encountered a person with any type of senile dementia routinely back then. Nowadays this is not at all the reality of the more widespread prevalence of this condition/disease we are witnessing within our families and our communities, and these statistics are quite a cause for concern, as per National Institute of Health (NIH), "One in Seven Americans Age 71 and Older Has Some Type of Dementia" (2007). Per wording of the Constitution: "In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office..." It can be inferred that although our Forefathers did not explicitly define "inability to discharge the Powers and Duties", nor did the Constitution expressly confer a duty to a sitting president to determine their own capacity for "inability to discharge their Powers and Duties", it follows that (1) a president who does not have the ability to discharge the Powers and Duties is legitimate cause for concern and removal; and (2) by any reasonable standard of interpretation of this wording in the Constitution, an ability to perform implies a measurement on some valid battery or scale that by convention would not be a self - directed nor self- reported assessment.

In terms of presidential ability and the "job of the POTUS" and performance of POTUS, it should be a determination of ability based upon a broad spectrum of psychosocial domains / "abilities", which include cognitive "ability". And cognitive ability, in particular requires objective measurement and testing.

As a medical consultant myself - specialising in mental health I have been more concerned for the country with the mental health of the other candidate for President. In that person’s case there is a life long public record of concerning erratic behaviour but also an overriding cognitive deterioration in recent years. I would agree that extensive medical assessments should be a prerequisite for anyone putting themselves forward for leadership of the country. If prospective CEO’s of large companies, pilots of aircraft, anyone wanting to sign up for the military etc have to be healthy enough to be employed, then Presidential candidates need, at least, to prove they are capable. Since my assessment is that the other candidate is more of a problem win the mental and cognitive health areas than President Biden, I would like to see a similar assessment done, here, about that fellow. I note quite a number of medical specialists have done these ‘at a distance’ assessment and they seem to agree with me. It seems to me that it is the team members of a President’s Administration ( the cabinet members), under the leadership of the President, determine more the success and safety of a presidency than the President alone. Who the President chooses for those roles tells me how mentally capable a President really is.

Dr. Tom Pitts, a board-certified neurologist, in an interview with NBC's Tom Llamas was pretty sure that Biden is affected by parkinsonismi even if diagnostic exams are needed to understand the cause of parkinsonism. From a political point of view, we already have a President who, by his own admission. and/or by his "magic circle" is active from 11am to 8pm and that after the debate he has imposed himself to "work less and take more naps". Practically a working President. part-time... Regardless of the cause. Objectively, Biden has speech impediments with slurring his words so bad it is so hard to comprehend what he is saying. Every president must possess clear and cogent speech which everyone can understand without troubles and wondering what he said.

My husband had an MRI in December, 2019, for cancer screening. While there was no growths in the brain, there was finally for me validation of FTD, Frontal Temporal lobe dementia, that I discovered in 2018 and joined a forum for this still little known condition. It is different from Alzheimer and Parkinson's as on some levels he was functional. It could br these conditions overlap but in my husband's case his impulsivity and reckless disregard of consequences was evident quite early on, at least 20 years before that. When a president makes a snap decision like he wants to leave Afghanistan no matter what and is stubborn enough to double down, this is decidedly playing with fire. My husband used to like to flirt with danger. At times though he was able to pull things together and seem normal to the outside world. In the words of the FTD forum, this is called "showtime". I could write much more... he also was falling towards the end had frightening lack of effect shown in photos, a blank stare in his eyes. From what I see, I believe nature will make the decision for everybody. My husband was in a similar state about 5 months before a complete collapse. Things cannot be expected to get better. These brain cells will not rejuvenate no matter how much adrenaline or uppers are pumped into him.

The intermittent worsening of cognition, falls, stiffness , in ordination, confabulation to fill on memory gaps, the slowing down and seemingly impaired emotional control centrally an diminished facial expressions all could be due to Lewy Body as a differential diagnosis. Diminished repertoire of thinking, stubborness, obsessive features appearing or worsening, and new tremors if any, rigidity etc etc if present will be contributory. A challenging role which is stressful, would be detrimental and possible decline is a definite concern.

The doctor raises a good point in regard to the possibility that some neurodegeneration could be a late sequel of a history of brain aneurysms. Some people who believed that Reagan had early Alzheimer's during his second term argued that the interval of prolonged hypoxia between the time Reagan was shot and the time he was in surgery may have accelerated the later development of his dementia. However, this theory is speculative and not widely accepted.

Prior to 2016, I worked for several years at a gated retirement community in Dallas, TX, initially as a security officer, then as a concierge and valet. Our facility had an "independent living" side, which was essentially an apartment complex, and a "managed care" side, which had a 24/7 nursing staff, and included a memory-care wing. All members of the staff on the independent living side were trained to engage with the residents as often as possible, and to note any signs of concern in their physical or cognitive faculties. If we noted anything resembling a _pattern_ of concern (because everyone has the occasional "bad day"), we were to immediately report those observations to the medical/management staff, who would speak to the resident's family, to see if the resident should be placed into managed care. Going by the video evidence that was publicly available at that time, I stated then, and restate now, that Joe Biden would have been seriously recommended for managed care, and possibly direct transfer to memory care, as early as 2018, and definitely by 2019. Pushing Joe Biden into the Presidency is a public example of Elder Abuse.

This whole situation with Biden is so very sad to witness. Millions watched and are convinced that this is not normal aging. And to your point, yes, many like myself question the motive of those close to Biden, when at an "arm's length" objectivity (and beyond), it is clear something is amiss. A first - year nursing student could appreciate the signs and symptoms pointing to some form of Parkinsonism or neuropathology. And when elder abuse is so prevalent and should be taken very seriously (unfortunately, the laws have little teeth as I have witnessed first hand in my family - sister financially exploited my mother) - it sickens me that what is going on the White House on so many levels undermines people getting the care they need and also invalidates the excruciating betrayal that victims of elder abuse endure.

This was an excellent video, and very educational. I do believe that our current president has a lot of issues that are starting to get worse. But it is also good information for all those who have an aging parent or grandparent.

My mom died at 92. The last two years of her life we saw a significant downward slide. Very similar to what I observe with Biden. Her speech, language, posture and facial posture/expression were very similar to what we see with Biden. I’m a speech language pathologist so I really know what I’m observing. My mom a retired nurse got it into her head that she had an older adult onset MS. I could find very little research on this and do not know where she heard this. Is this a thing? If so could this be what Biden has. Also, mom was adamant she was always right but made lots of errors. Thoughts?

Since we have two elderly men competing for the presidency, the public would be better served by explaining the situation of both candidates - since both seem to have serious issues. Just talking about one seems lacking.

I agree with this writer. Let's hear what you have to say about Donald Trump as he has made literally thousands of "conflabulatory" statements throughout his last term in office and his multiple campaigns. I do realise that most of Trump's issues are due to his personality disorders as described by 37 prominent psychiatrists and mental health professionals . ( See The Dangerous Case Of Donald Trump, updated and expanded, headed by Bandy Lee, M.D, Yale University ) I'd be very interested in your professional opinion concerning Trump's rambling and excessively long speeches . Why he jumps from one subject to another that has nothing to do with his original topic. Why does he constantly repeat his words or his sentences. And what about his constant monotone delivery during those excessively long speeches ? By the way, did you know President Biden broke his foot several months ago. Us older folks don't heal as rapidly as you younger people. Might have been partially responsible for some stumbling or tripping--don't you think? I'll be watching for your critique of Trump's neurological issues .

This was very helpful. My husband had a stroke and has vascular dementia however I’m not aware of the testing that was performed. I was told by a neurologist, 2 neurologist that he had vascular dementia and I saw the MRI scans I assume. I wanted an evaluation and 2 physicians told me it wasn’t necessary. His Lange including writing , memory and his gait and eyesight were all affected. He goes along for a while and stairsteps down. That was why I ask for the evaluation. Thank you for what I learned personally from this video.

Have you been watching Trump's rallies? I watch every one on RSBN for 4 years. it's rich to call out one candidate and barely the other. The other's 'Man, Person, TV, Camera' test was hardly adequate and that candidate's slurring is noticeably worse.

Being a cyclist like me Biden may have shortened hamstrings, resulting in a stiffened gait. I just went through six weeks of PT to stretch them. The results are alarmingly positive. I am seventy eight and have forgot to stretch for six years. If you cycle don't forget to stretch your hammers every day.

Part of the problem with analyzing Joe Biden is that his behaviors are looked at as if they are suddenly recent occurrences, when you can see similar incidents throughout his political career. For instance, confabulation--Biden has long been known for taking others' experiences and making them his, because it sounds good or endears him to the audience. He has long been known as a gaffe machine who couldn't shut up. And, sure, he has a grandfatherly image, but he has exhibited a quick temper before in his previous campaigns for president. Is this evidence of cognitive decline, or is it Joe being Joe?

@@wlogan2000 Others have made the same observations re Biden's personality and attributes throughout his career, and though all the points you make are valid, there's something more going on here than just normal aging superimposed on his usual quirks. The decline has been fairly rapid, with distinct and new presentations of both motor and cognitive deficits. It is reasonably consistent with onset of a neurodegenerative condition.

Please stop lying. You can't put the clips of Biden speaking like 8 years ago side by side his clips now and come up with "Biden being Biden" claim. You don't need to be a doctor to identify a cognitive decline.

For me that doesn’t matter as much as the presidency being a 24/7 job that sometimes requires you to push through, and even if it’s just Joe being an older Joe, his ability to push through is hampered by his aging. Normal aging can impair working a high intensity, high consequence job. Sometimes we just have to accept that we can’t do all the things we use to or want to.

I'm 72 and in October, 2022, I went numb from the neck down and the doctors finally realized it was not my lumbar spine this time but my cervical spine and the disc was putting tremendous pressure on my spinal cord. Had my 4th cervical fusion in December. Much better, but feel unsteady walking and do experience occasional falls. Thanks for answering so many questions!! God bless you!! ❤🤗🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲

At the stage where Biden seems to be at now, the next change will be that he doesn't recognize people he knows, which will even include members of his own family including Jill. If you've never personally witnessed anyone going through this, consider yourself fortunate.

My father during his working years drove all kinds vehicles, bulldozers, bucket loaders etc. Even had a trucking business at one point. When he got near retirement age he developed Parkinsons disease. I noticed at times he started driving his pick up in the middle of the road. Then one day he went to back out of his driveway but put it in drive instead of reverse. He was ok but caused pretty bad damage to garage door that he hit.He had a really simple little Chevy S10 pick up with an automatic. He asked me if he should give up his license and i said yes. So that was the end of his driving days. He didnt want to kill or hurt anybody on the road. If Biden makes a mistake about a war etc I hate to imagine what the result could be.
