Best Stereo Setup for Audio: Sennheiser MKH 8040 ORTF! Next Level Field Recording

Ғылым және технология

Are the Sennheiser MKH 8040s as ORTF still good enough for field recording for me? The DMS kit is fantastic, but does this imply I won't be using the Cinela with this set of stereo microphones any longer? The answer is simple. I love ORTF and the quality...

    Loved this. When you mentioned street photography it made my heart sing. Thinking about getting into more of this sort of thing really lights me up and the way that you explain things makes it seem so accessible. Have you ever done a video comparing ORTF and DMS? I'm curious what the differences are and why I would choose one over the other. I have the Zoom F6 already. Just got to figure out the mics and wind protection.

    Hey there -- Love the videos. So much good and fun info. I've watched your video on setting volumes (A Guide to Setting Gain for Field Recording: Tips and Tricks), but I have a more detailed question. I have a similar set up to the video seen here. The 8040s and the mix pre (even the cinela). In the mix-pre what is your starting gain in the microphone set up. There are essentially two amplitude settings. 1 in the set up (click the volume knob) and setting the Gain and then just adjusting the knob for the channel. I'm curious specifically around the Gain in the set up screen. I feel like, and I might be wrong, it's important to get that going as the base and then going from there with the volume knob. Too much Gain in the set up screen leads to the noise floor showing up much earlier in the volume adjustment knob setting. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!

    Hi . Thanks for all the wonderful content. I was wondering if you ever tried to add a center mic to the ortf setup? I think ortf sounds beautiful but I often miss the center information when mixing 5.1. Also, can you fit an extra 8040/8050 in the Cinela while keeping the split box for the cables? Iøm considering getting the setup and would appreciate your feedback. Thanks :)

    I think it sounded great. I especially loved the crashing waves. That recording had some lovey big booming wave crashes in it that sounded nice and dramatic. That was my favourite recording in this video. I probably prefer the Schoepps but it would have been great to hear a side-by-side comparison between the two. Hard to say, but the Schoepps always seem to give such a nice clear and clean sound. Anyway, as always I loved the video. Thanks so much Marcel. And Libby of course ;o) Can't forget the boss can I ? I can't afford MKH 8040 stereo pair.... but I notice they are not that sensitive at around 20 mV/Pa ....my most sensitive mic is the Rode NTG5 at 66mV/Pa ; but I would like to record ambient sounds in stereo, so, do you think getting a 2nd NTG5 and using them as a stereo pair is a bad idea ? (since I never heard of anyone stereo pairing shptgun mic.s) .. Also why do use you Zoom F6 rather than Mixpre 6 with the MKH 8040s ? As usual fascinating sounds you record bravo

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can surely do that, so look for a stereo bar. Rode sells it. You may try the Rode wind cover for these mics first and see how it goes. I believe Rycote offers several BBG's plus covers, however when considering the cost, you might start with a less expensive Rode stereo microphone kit or even Behringer has some tiny ones that fit in a blimp. Also, keep in mind that you may require additional cable. Depending on the space, a second microphone stand, etc. When you add on and compare the cost of what is required, you sometimes end up spending more than on a set that already has everything ready. So break down the cost for another NTG5 plus al the other things to make it work. I use the F6 anytime I feel like it. When it comes to field recording, there is no noticeable difference between this machine and the MixPre 6ii in terms of sound.

  • @pandoraefretum

    @@FreeToUseSounds Thanks so much, your time really appreciated. I agree "no noticeable difference between MixPre and Zoom 6", but I give the edge for "warmth" of sound to the MixPre. Do you think a LOM basicUcho pair would be good for ambient sounds ? better than a stereo pair of NTG5 ?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @@pandoraefretum Ah you are talking about the new LOM microphones? I have the USI Pro and loved them just as I have the Micro. I'm sure the new one are great too. These are omnis as well and definitely great for ambience. If you want to go with Rode, also look up the Rode NT5 as stereo pair or the M5.

  • @pandoraefretum

    @pandoraefretum

    @@FreeToUseSounds ...that's right the new LOM are omni, small, quite sensitive, around 63 mV/Pa and reasonably low self noise, 14 dBA... I'm going to give them a go in half an hour... if I'm lucky.... I have a stereo NT4 (which I think is 2 NT5 in XY configuration).. obviously I would be able to do ORTF config, but maybe I never went for NT5 because it's "more of the same".. I follow your channel more and more... I suppose it can become quite addictive thinking of all the amazing sounds there are to record in the world.
