@@Impressio_Nisti That's what's ironic. When actors talk about Method Acting, they talk about how they try to become the person they are playing and then, hopefully, the emotion their character would feel envelops them and they feel that emotion too. Karl said in a behind-the-scenes thing that for angry scenes he just "pretended it was real" and then acted how he would act if it were. So by being himself and behaving how he would if it really happened, he was method acting lol. So you're both right and wrong.

@Jason It obviously isn't all an act is it, we know he's a producer because that's literally how he was introduced in the first place. Karl might exaggerate parts of his personality but he's still genuine in many ways

I used to work weekends at a care home whilst I was at college and this scene makes me angry. I used to look after a man, he was 97 and he was a FEPOW Far East Prisoner of War, captured by the Japanese and made to work on the burma railway. He used to talk to me about it every day, we'd go through all his medals and photos etc and he'd just talk and I'd listen. Poor bloke used to have nightmares and everything. One day a lot of staff had rang in sick so we had someone from an outside agency in to help out and I think she was Chinese but to him she looked Japanese and of course he instantly took a disliking to her and was shouting, very upset. It was clear everthing he had been through had scarred him for life. Nobody used to come visit him, I thought he just had no family left and apparently on my days off he used to ask when's Tom next coming, the other carers told me. Of course the day he died was very upsetting but I felt good that I'd been a friend to him. But I got so angry that day, never been so angry in all my life as people who never visited him before came crawling out of the woodwork and went rooting through his things, medals and all. This scene upsets me because in some cases it's real and it's disgusting.

It really is, i work with ppl with learning difficulties & we used to support an old man 80+ with cancer. When he died his family crawled out of the woodwork wanting his possessions although they never visited him.We looked after him when he was Ill & frightened or when he needed anything at all.It was us who sat with him during his final hours & told him we loved him & held his hand because he was petrified of dying. We loved him & he loved us but his family didn't give a toss but there they were being the big I am at his funeral.Boiled my piss because like you we knew they didn't truly care.I wouldn't have wished his last few days on my worst enemy but they still didn't make the effort.

And the weird thing is that sort of person would say the same thing about the carers. I think it was this particular character who said thats why people go into caring so they could grab what they could when a resident passed away. Such a materialistic and cynical view. I have 2 relatives in the caring profession. They're dedicated to their work and form a bond with those they care for not like GPs who are paid a hell of a lot more but wouldn't set foot near the surgery during the pandemic and still prefer to do their diagnosing from a distance. So much for vocation

But thst could be because people have nothing so set store by material possessions. Those who are well off maybe don't have to worry about the material things so much. John Lennon wasn't singing all you need is love or imagine when he didn't have a pot to piss in at the beginning of his career. He was singing money that's what I want. Only those who are financially secure can afford to be sentimental and not worry about the material things in life

I hate how people like Frankie Boyle dismissed this series as exploiting of mocking the vulnerable, maybe such critics don't have the imagination to create something with nuance. I honestly thought this was one of the most beautiful and touching series on TV in a long time and this scene really hit me, both because it exposed the heartless nature of some people who put their parents in homes and because it showed Carls character as one of the nicest people in the whole place. He was the man with a heart of gold who says the things which no one else will say because they fear losing their job; the distillation and combination of love and common sense.

@UKSKIDS this is where it niggles me about Rickys work. Its all saints vs sinners. These are the good people. These are the bad. This is why I liked how he fleshed out kev a bit as series 2 and the special went on. Should have kept in the deleted scene of him recalling being called a runt. Explained a lot about kevs character

Been working in care 10 years and you see this kind of sh-t all the time. Relatives who you’ve never seen once suddenly appear from nowhere as soon as residents get ill or die. Pretending they cared, but it’s all for show and/or to see what goodies they can get out of it.

I work in a nursing home and this is very realistic, honestly. Family will sometimes literally only come to cause trouble or be vultures. And they're often rude or cruel in some way when they do.

Karl is just one of those happy accidents that Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant had handed to them by the comedy gods. I don't think he ever intended to be this good, or be in acting at all, and I don't think Ricky would have ever thought hed have such comedy gold just land in his lap. Thank god for this duo haha.
