While Tony is no longer quite so aggressively grouchy about life, he continues to struggle to fill the void left behind by his late wife.

The saddest part of Tony's story is it seems - I think like most of us - we wait until we've lost someone before we become the best version of ourselves. The version we could have been for them.

There is much truth in that statement. After I lost my wife I had a tremendous amount of support from my coworkers. I didn't understand it in the beginning why people helped and stayed so engaged. I remember mentioning to 1 of the directors. That we have a lot of very kind and compassionate people in what is otherwise at the corp level a soul crushing company. He looked at me and said basically "they are like that because they believe that is what you would do for them". So sometimes we don't see it in ourselves because and it take others show us.

In a way I think it's a lie, but I also don't. I think in this moment, due to him being challenged to admit the cruel reality of his words, he would rather believe in heaven as a concept because his view is just too sad. So yes, it was for the kid he said it out loud, but it was also for himself. The kid let him know how upsetting his view was, briefly altering his perception of reality to accept the possibility of heaven. The kid acted as a gateway to accept something he never normally would, even if it's briefly. This is the kind of moment that'd stick with someone for the rest of their life, so I doubt he'd go back to being so against heaven after this moment.

There is so much she wasn't here to see, graduations, their careers, a wedding, our first grandchild coming in late August of 2023. Ricky wheeling out the kids in hospice was a kick in the nuts. A cheap shot but it still works. You saw it coming so were probably wearing a cup. I preferred the Kath story arc which essentially says the same thing as the series, which is that life can be sad at times, but it's best not to do it alone, even if it with a pet.

I lost my sweet wife Pam in the fall of 2019. I watched this entire series and cried during most episodes because it hit so very close to home. I even watch these clips to simply cry because there is a strange healing power in tears. It's almost as if Ricky Gervais lost his wife in real life because he expresses all the feelings I've had the past 2 years. Oh how I wish my experience were not real but only a tv show. Nonetheless, I truly appreciate this outstanding show. For those that may be interested I do a podcast on grief and loss. It's available from all the major podcast providers. Look for "Love Letters to Pam" - The Jack Church Show. In a weird kind of way doing the show helps me in the healing process just like watching After Life helps as well.

I think Tony Way's looking at Tony when asked questions by the children on the cancer ward is so powerful. Knowing the impact of the girls name also being Lisa and the fact Tony does not believe in Heaven will have on him emotionally. Shows he was a really good friend. Fantastic show about the struggles with grief and loss

My partner and I watched this whilst she was going through treatment for breast cancer, it fecking hit hard, her surgery, hair loss etc. We’d binge watch and be sobbing all the way through it, fearing the worst. Fortunately she has had the all clear for 2 years now, the Afro of chemo curls is a small price to pay. Great series that puts things into perspective!

I lost my wonderful husband in 2014. He was 50 years old. He’d had a minor surgery, had a blood clot break free, and three weeks to the day of that surgery, he died. 14 minutes was all it took to crush my life to smithereens. I never got suicidal, but I was indifferent to living, for a short period of time. Until you face an empty house for the first time, or worse yet, your bed, you really cannot know what it’s like. But life waits for no man. You HAVE to go on. You can wish for things to be different, but the sooner you realize this is YOUR new normal, the better. Love your mate, live for today, because tomorrow is not promised to any of us, and talk about EVERYTHING, that way there’s no regrets. The best gift my hubby gave me was the strength to move on, without him, because we can’t live our lives looking back through the rear view mirror.

I totally get this. My wife died in June 2021. It's been well over a year now, and I feel the same way. About the only thing that keeps me from suicide is the four cats (a mother cat and her three kittens) that my wife and I rescued in 2019. Even when she was in the hospital or, later, a nursing home, she would always ask me "how are the kitties doing?" So I have to take care of them now. Other than that, my life's pretty much over. I live like a recluse now... my only contact with others is with store clerks.
