Best Mini Keyboard for Ableton? Launchkey Mini Mk3 Review

Музыка

I've been using the Novation Launchkey Mini Mk3 for the last few weeks, and this is why I think it's the best mini keyboard for Ableton on the market. This video covers how it works with various Ableton Live devices as well as mapping 3rd party plugins. My setup is a base model 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro 2021 with Ableton Live Suite 11.

Love this mini keyboard. I recently got the 49 key version. Lots more keys and also 9 faders (8 tracks + master volume).

You have a keyboard in thew LaunchKey line, not the Mini line, and your keyboard came with some nice included software missing in the Mini. The mini keyboard has a much worse-feeling, noisy keybed. Too cheap feeling for me and, like Dylan, not enough keys for me. I went with a NI M32 keyboard (which does equally nice mapping for all my NI instruments), plus the smaller (now discontinued) LaunchControl surface for mapping.

I will say I don't mind the keybed on the mini as I think it's worth the trade off for the size and portability, but totally fair to call out that they are cheaper / smaller / noisier than the bigger launchkeys

I have one crucial question: Can I in some sort of way get the following Transport functions on this controller: Play/Stop, Rec clip, Rec arrangement, Jump forward, jump backward, Loop mode, Undo and Overdub? This really speeds up my workflow. Any clue??

Play and record yes, record clip yes, jump forward no, undo no. Some of those are on the larger LaunchKey mk3 controllers but I don’t think overdub is.

I haven’t found anything that suggests we can but it may be doable or something they can add in a firmware update

I just bought one but it has a plastic feel and sound.. when I put some pressure on it I hear a plastic squeaky noise, does yours do the same?

It’s definitely on the cheaper side of build quality, but I dont think I hear any plastic sound when playing it normally

is there a way to navigate through multiple devices in effects rack with a button/s, so I can use the pots to control different macros instead of having 16, juts many blocks of 8?

You can do this via the ui on your computer but I don't believe you can cycle devices per track, only different tracks and their top level devices, on the hardware

I got it thinking it would be fully functional with my ableton 9. I was wrong.

Would you say that the keys feel good or do they feel cheap

they're definitely a step down from most normal keyboards due to size but the portability is a fair trade off
