Why I Love the Launchkey Mini Mk3

This is my favorite mini MIDI keyboard! This isn't an in-depth tutorial, but I explain some ways this keyboard can be used.

    In firmware patch 1.1 there is an option to set the encoders (knobs) to "pick-up mode". With this enabled, you will need to turn the knob past the current setting before they take any effect. This means you dont get that annoying thing where they jump to a new value.

    @@latenightluke yeah they compliment each other perfectly, especially since the launchpad has four full pages of custom modes. You can have for example, the launchkey’s encoders controlling vol, pan, sends, devices in Ableton etc while the launchpad is in session mode controlling clips and scenes, then switch your custom mode to play drums and instruments or any midi functions you assign it to.

    Nice review! Can you tell if it has “bidirectional” midi? For instance: if you set a PAD to control a “On/Off” parameter and you turn it On and Off directly on the software using the mouse, does that reflect on the PAD? Thanks!

    You can't load anything on to the controller, but the controller can use those sounds. If you're in Ableton, you can load the sounds you want into a drum rack, and then play them from there.

  • @latenightluke

    @latenightluke

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! The main different will be losing the mapping that takes place automatically when it's used with Ableton. So the knobs when set to volume won't automatically control the volume, etc. You can still use the knobs / pads for these purposes, but they need to be mapped manually. Hope that helps!

    I just wish it had a scale chord mode where each key plays a different chord while staying in the same key.

  • @latenightluke

    @latenightluke

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can set that up with stock Ableton plugins! MIDI effects -> Chord -> Major chord. Then: MIDI effects -> Scale -> C Major. After loading it in, you can change the base to be in whatever key you want. Make sure that your Chord plugin comes before the Scale plugin. Now you can play one note chords and each chord will be in key!

    @jtoobacc18239

    @@AliaksejKa It does make sense, because it makes the key's output more fluid. Novation doesn't have the option to change velocity curve for the launchkey mini mk3 in it's software but you can change the velocity curve in Ableton and it makes a big difference, without it it's terrible. But I think the velocity would be better if they made it's own velocity curve settings in the software like other companies have done for their mini MIDI keyboard controllers.
