I used hook grip for a while, but I might just switch to straps for going really heavy because it genuinely feels like my thumb is going to rip off or break and and don't want to push it.

Solid method but one flaw is if you dislike going thru pain don’t try. After I hit a 465 DL using this grip my thumb itself was crying 😅
Pro tip: get vet tape, the self adhesive flexible almost cloth like tape that is used on animals because it won't stick to fur. Wrap your thumbs and thank me later

And I assume what you meant was forearm strength. Grip strength is mostly genetic/ metacarpal and tendon determined. One does not simply hypertrophy the hands lol
The hook grip has been around like forever I do use it I told a guy this hook grip at the gym he told me I’m crazy it will take your thump off I know I was right but I wonder if he ever found out eventually a lot of people didn’t know about it not even the personal trainers who have trained people for years I would ask them about it do you know about the hook grip they would not know all that college all that money and studying didn’t even know about the hook grip that weightlifting and powerlifting athletes use
I can't hook grip well. Tried. I use mix grip for working weight. Straps for accessories and sub max work. But I also use double over hand till I cant and it fails. Heavy rdl ? Straps. Heavy rows, straps. Goal is to train back not my grip. Main pull, mix grip and chalk. If I can't hold it I can't complete with it.

Just train your grip?
I have a problem at my commercial gym there bars spine , so when I deadlift the bar it spins when lifted, and it becomes hard to hold on overhand grip, so I lose the grip but on alternate grip makes it not spine so in this case do I always have to use alternate grip every set because the bar spines evan with chalk on my hands and is normal to use a barbell that spins to deadlift?
@martinXY
Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. A spinning bar is very useful for Olympic lifts, but very annoying for deadlifts, and yet you're the first person who's said anything (OK, I haven't looked too much, but no-one in any gyms has said anything).
Seen a couple dudes test their bicep doing the over and under grip.
Here’s to trying to remember this next time I do dead lifts……..
Wouldn’t this be more an issue with grip strength?
yeah that doesnt work for me it causes an imbalance in my grip because my thumb only hooks to my first two fingers and then theres a gap in my last to fingers i absolutely hate this grip.
Are straps a bad thing ??
Wouldn't this create pressure and accumulate wears/damage on the muscles connected to the thumb?

Yes lol
The design is very human
The wheel has already been invented
Isn't thumb at risk of injury??
I shoot my Turkish bow eastern style with a thumb ring so I think I can pull this off.
I'm using straps cause my hand is so small 😢 I can barely wrap my fingers around the bar lmao
How much is hook supposed to add. For me when i tested it it added about %20-30% to my overhand grip

@Meruemo not maxing them out, no. Im dont doubt there is a limit im just saying hook grip is good enough for me to hit my max deadlift (im skinny with decent grip, though)
Or, if you are going to use friction instead of functional strength, just get versa-grip knock offs or old school straps.
Mixed grip is best grip. Just alternate wrists with each set, imbalance issue solved. You all need to get your shiz together. It was another SS video that absolutely sold me on the mixed grip and they were right.
I think your hands have to be a decently normal size to be able to do this. Doesn't work with small hands. Unless you're trying to use a bar thinner than 40 mm or something
Eventually that thumb is going to blow out
I don’t have thumbs
Or you could just improve your grip strength

You sound like binging with babsih xd
how heavy do these guys lift that you can't hold the bar?? i'm not special in terms of grip strenght but i can hold my 250bodyweight for 10 secs. that means i could do a deadlift of 500pounds max without any grip change. i get that all the ultra freaks need some help but come on...any non pro level powerlifter should be able to have that kind of grip
Dont put your thumb inside that will break your thumb
Horribly uncomfortable and causes stress into the thumb joint. Unless you need to pull without straps...just use straps.
The best grip is mixed grip. Hook grip is for sumo bros, pseudish weightlifters and other assorted malcontents.
I always use the hook grip because I hate the alternating grip.
I truly believe and stand by that all men who are seeking the highest deadlift they can possibly achieve, should be working their way towards a 405lbs deadlift with a double overhand grip (no hook).
I hate this grip effective but doesn’t feel too good
Yeah and break your thumb while at it
Hookgrip takes a couple months to get used to in order to get rid of the pain. Unless you're a true gym rat who is absolutely addicted to moving weight, just use straps bro.
And when your hands just aren’t big enough for this technique, just use straps
Yeah ripped my right thumb doing this. Not worth it for casual gym goers like me.
Wrap your thumbs, problem solved.
Hahahahha, my fingers ain't long enough
Yeah, hook with mixed grip? Why? I don't even seen Dan Green, Oak, doing that with 800+ I get it for sumo clowns, gives even less range of motion. :)
Don't work for my small hands. Ditch the hook grip and just get straps
I fundamentally do not understand how this works for anybody. Your fingernail has zero friction. Holding onto your thumb is like holding on to a sweaty pumpkin seed.
Repent, and turn to Christ while there is still time, God Bless.
