Best and Worst Guns from 'Die Hard'

In yet another Die Hard themed Christmas special, James Reeves continues his unhealthy obsession with the famous 1988 Christmas movie starring Bruce Willis as John McClain and Carl Winslow as Sergeant Al Powell. This year, we go over the best and worst guns from the movie, ranking then from last to first. Do you agree with this list? Sound off in the comments, and merry Christmas you filthy animals.

I bought myself an MP5 a few weeks ago just so I could have one to LARP with while I watched Die Hard this Christmas Eve. I've got it on the desk next to me as I type this comment, and I'm going to go put the Die Hard Blu-Ray in after I spend some time with James Reeves this Xmas Eve by watching this vid. That said, I realized too late that I also needed an MP5K in order to properly LARP while watching Die Hard 2...which is also a Christmas movie. I always end up watching all three Die Hard movies after watching the first one on Christmas Eve because I love them all. I'll watch 2 and 3 tomorrow. And next Christmas, I'll be properly prepared for LARPing with an MP5K as well.

Ah, the joys of being an "early adopter". The H&K P7 was the gun that inspired me to apply for my Firearm Certificate (license) in the UK, after seeing one in Guns & Ammo back in the early 1980s. I never did get around to buying one, though, because (you'll love this) after getting my FAC I actually bought.... a BREN TEN! Took me about a month to conclude that was a POS but I still managed to sell it for a profit and, after owning the Bren Ten and deciding I was a CZ fanboy, I replaced it with a CZ75, which meant I finally made a good decision and I kept it until pistols were banned in 1987 (IIRC). But yeah, not long after that, the P7 became famous in Diehard and the Bren Ten became famous in Miami Vice. Incidentally, I knew the guy who bought the Bren Ten and, when the handgun ban happened, I arranged him to sell it to a guy I worked with in Houston, Texas. That guy has owned it ever since and he still loves it even though it still can't empty a mag' without feed jams.

The M60 is actually an M60E3. It has a slightly shorter barrel and utilizes a forward grip. They were first bastardized in by SEALs during and after Vietnam after falling in love with the Stoner MG and how easy it was to carry and fire from the hip/shoulder. The S&W Model 15 is a K frame, which means that it is actually a .38 frame as it was designed around the .38 S&W Special cartridge. The Model 19 by contrast is a K frame chambered in .357 Magum, but it is intended to be carried alot and fired very little. Not a good idea IMO, the S&W L frame is a better idea for the .357 Magnum cartridge, the N frame is a good idea (Model 28, aka Highway Patrolman) for magnum revolver cartridges. I carried a Smith & Wesson Model 15 revolver when I was a range safety officer. I did not have the capacity of a semi-auto pistol, but the Model 15 is very accurate, especially in single action mode. I could put my shots into a fist sized group at 25 yards.

Speaking of LAPD Model 15’s, the actual blued M-15 that actor Martin Milner carried in his role as Officer Pete Malloy, was put on a gun auction site several years ago, it had the same grips (aftermarket) that were on it during the filming, along with a letter from Martin himself acknowledging that this was the authentic revolver. Last I heard at the time it was bid up to a little over 10K, but it still didn’t meet the reserve price at the time. I believe the reserve was never met so the bidding was discontinued & it was removed from the auction page.

Combat Handguns magazine quoted an American Firearms Dealer who was disarmed of his H&K P7 pistol by armed robbers, and as they were taking him into the stockroom to murder him, the robber who'd taken his P7 tried to shoot him with it, but unfamiliar with the gun, he failed to hold it properly and it wouldn't fire! At the point that the robber began trying to shoot him, the hostage grabbed for the nearest gun of the several he'd concealed about his place just for this scenario, which was a .357 Magnum revolver, and killed both armed robbers. He carried his P7 with this exact scenario in mind and doing so, along with easily accessible, but not visible handguns placed throughout his storeroom had just saved his own life! The P7 is a beautiful gun, and one of my favorites, unlike the dreadful Walther PPK, this was the weapon carried by the personal Bodyguard to Her Royal Highness Princess Anne. Unfortunately, the one time he relied on it when the Royal limousine carrying HRH Princess Anne was rammed by a lone, armed kidnapper, the damn thing jammed as he tried to shoot the kidnapper. In return, he was shot multiple times (but thankfully lived and recovered from his wounds) whilst the kidnapper was attacked by passers by and overpowered! I suspect that this stoppage heralded the retirement of countless PPK's from protection duties worldwide as no one wanted that happening to them!

Great send-up of the best Christmas movie ever! A family friend who served over 25 years on the New Jersey State Police and carried the P7M8 as his issue sidearm for most of those years said that peculiarity if the grip cock system saved a lot of Troopers' lives over the years in close-in altercations where a suspect successfully wrestled the officer's sidearm away because it isn't immediately intuitive. He did also state that once you become acclimated to the system, it makes defending yourself completely instinctive. Case in point, while assigned to the Gang Crime unit, he was the senior investigator at a gang shooting in Camden. If you know anything about Camden, NJ... You'll stay the hell out unless you're going to the Aquarium or the USS New Jersey. It's the only community in Jersey where NJSP did municipal patrols alongside local until the City of Camden PD merged with Camden County PD. Anyhow, the victim was a member of one gang, gunned down by another, and while they had about 30 officers, mostly State and a few locals, on scene, one of the victim's gang buddies, coked out of his mind, decided to "tribute" his fallen brother by doing a drive-by on the crime scene with I believe a Micro Uzi. So this idiot comes screaming didn't the street in some old late 70s honker two door, throws it into a spin, sticks his gun out the window, and starts spraying. 30 cops, again most armed with the P7M8, lit the guy up. Suffice it to say, The dude had such a huge amount of drugs in him he didn't hit anybody, but ended up taking approximately 40 something rounds (more or less; as primary, my family friend attended the autopsy and said after being cleaned off, "the guy looked like Swiss cheese") and was clocked out before the car came to a stop. So, a perfect single stack 9? Perhaps not. A damned fine pistol to defend yourself with? I'd say so.

I thought I was the only guy in the universe that did not like the Walther PP. Now I can come out of the closet. I love everything by Walther, even the Creed for carry sake, but the PP and the PPK I just don’t get the popularity. Uncomfortable in the hand, too snappy when fired, and looks were just ok at best. To make it look good Sean Connery had to overdress for every scene with it.
