The Guns of Die Hard (Which is a Christmas Movie)

In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves goes over not only the guns of Die Hard - yes, THAT Christmas film - but he also brings you little known facts about the movie and the use of the guns in the movie, including the Steyr AUG, H&K MP5 and the H&K P7, as well as the trusty Beretta 92. PLUS, we have a little myth buster at the end - could John McClane really have pulled off the "Happy Trails, Hans" duel at the end of the film? James finds out today on TFBTV.

It's no coincidence that the best Christmas movie (Die Hard) and the second best Christmas movie (Lethal Weapon) both featured the Beretta 92. It would have been a hat trick if Kevin carried one in Home Alone. Oh, well...

Very well said. I concur 100%. Although, Lethal Weapon has the best opening sequence for a Christmas movie and one the best period. Die Hard has, basically, been my favorite movie since I was a child. I could actually recited the entire dialogue from start to finish. Home Alone was amazing. Loved Reindeer Games and the first two Silent Night, Deadly Night films, as well.

As I posted, this point is not entirely true. The NYPD firearms training unit did field test/R&D the Beretta 92F 9mm. They packed them & authorized ESU guys, narcotics-counter terrorist detectives to use 92Fs too. The NYPD later chose the 9x19mm Glock 19, NY+2 trigger, the SIG P226 & the S&W 5946 DAO.

And unlike Die Hard, the main character in Lethal Weapon actually has a positive and lasting Christmas transition. Holly is the only character in Die Hard that is actually experiencing a Christmas story (she comes to discover that her family is more important than her career), but the franchise throws that out in Die Hard 3. Riggs has a lasting transition (realizing that his life is worth living and learning to forgive himself for the death of his wife), that lasts the entire franchise. He's even a family man by the time it wraps up. So... It's arguable that LW is actually MORE of a Christmas movie.

@@MumrikDK In some ways, it's harder to be a gun enthusiast and watch action movies, because you tend to spot stupid, unworkable, and outright impossible things that actors do with guns, not to mention things they just do badly or wrong. It always sours a movie for me a little when someone gets 40 shots out of a 15+1 handgun, or 200 out of a 30rd mag, and I hate seeing an actor tip a handgun up at a 30-degree angle when shooting at a bad guy who is directly in front of him. The absolute WORST thing, though, is hearing those gigantic Clunk-CLUNK! Foley sounds three or four times (usually when the actor's hands are nowhere near the weapon's charging system) before someone shoots. Makes me cringe in annoyance every time, even in a movie I love (like Stargate). Only slightly less annoying is the old "CLICK! Ha! The bad guy fooled you into thinking he was going to kill you but the chamber of his pistol was empty! Idiot!" (like in Die Hard 2). No bad guy as murderous as a movie bad guy would carry a weapon with no round chambered.

Actions always quicker than reaction I highly doubt the fake security guard would have been capable of shooting john based on the time table laid out in your video (amazing work talent and dedication thank you for taking this time to make this!!) Roughly 1 second is required for the brain to determine something has occurred and then yet another full second to begin the reaction this being 3 seconds at most it possibly could have been close and if you look it actually was the mp5 was on it's merry way up to meet the cowboy yet taking into consideration 3 other factors the two thieves had no idea john was actually armed and the laughter would have actually caused the endorphin release for happiness as well as laughter and having a seizure under an MRI are identical meaning this affects aspects of body control and cognition temporarily. . And third and less meaningful is the fact the guard would have been startled by the unexpected gunfire much the same as anyone who served in law enforcement or military would causing a momentary lapse in response time.. I am a disabled combat veteran from Iraq Ramadi 2007-2009 and love this channel thanks again and keep up the great content merry Christmas HO-HO-HO

Plus, I always had assumed that the fake security guard, after being told "this one is mine" lost focus on John and was watching Holly, to see her reaction to her husband's death. Possibly because he has a sadistic side. He was only half paying attention to John, he was focusing on Hans, expecting him to shoot, and was shocked when he saw movement out of the corner of his eye, followed shortly there after by gunfire and Hans is hit. He wasn't like a shooter anticipating a "go" signal to react in a fraction of second.

I believe they got rid of the paddle release because they were required to change the internals in a way so that one couldn't simply slip in full auto parts and have a submachine gun. While redesigning it, they figured it wouldn't be a big deal to omit the paddle since there was a button. They were wrong.

I used the Steyr when I was in the New Zealand Army from 1998 - 2002. It was the standard infantry rifle used at that time. It has since been replaced by the MARS-L rifle which is a lot like the M16. The Australian Army (not to be confused with Austrian) still uses the Steyr. They are made under licence at Thales Lithgow Arms in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia. Thales has made a modified version of it for use by the Australian Army as the EF88 AusSteyr. They also export it as the F90 Steyr. However, the weapon of choice for the elite SAS Regiment is the M4 carbine.

I took German in high school and I remember in senior year we convinced our teacher to let us watch "Die Hard" in class because they speak German in it. Needless to say German was my favorite class in high school. I will never forget the german line in the film: "Schiess die Fenster!" which means "Shoot the window!" in an informal second person command. If Hans had said it the formal way it would have been "Schiessen Sie die Fenster!" Also if you know the literal translation it explains why Dieter (I think that was the guy to whom Hans gave the command) was confused and Hans clarified that he meant for him to "shoot the glass". I have small hands too, but I love my Beretta 92fs. You can easily change the grips and install an oversize mag release and the controls are accessible for people with small hands. Also I have read that they didn't actually have any HK MP5's in the film, but they took HK94's and cut them down to look like the HK MP5A3. Sorry I hadn't watched up to the part when that was explained when I typed the comment.

You should mention the huge design flaw of the regular P7 magazines. In german police it's advised to immediately load a bullet into the chamber when you put a full magazine into the gun because due to the construction of the magazine and the mag release combined you can accidently "fire" the lowest round in the magazine if you happen to drop the gun on its bottom. This happened to a friend of mine who wasn't aware of this at this point.

  • @Schlabbeflicker

HK94s (along with early G3/MP5 clones) didn't come with paddle mag releases because ATF opinion letters compelled HK to remove the front hinge pin to the trigger group (around which the paddle mag release was installed) in order to prevent full-auto trigger groups from being dropped into MP5s. The addition of paddle mag releases in newer clones is just a result of HK, PTR, and others realizing that customers actually really like them.

I enlisted in the Corps in '97 and eventually ended up with a collateral duty, (Ship's security aboard a carrier,) that had me firing this sweet pistol. Exposure to the M9 helped start the process of leaving the cult of JMB and abandoning my prejudice against 9mm.

Beretta's open top slide design is often mentioned as a feature that increases ejection reliability. However, most cases of ejection failure involve the casing being caught between the breech face and the chamber end of the barrel. So, it only helps slightly when the ejection failure has anything to do with the wall of the slide on the left side.

Eddie may have had his MP5 in Condition 3 (breech closed on empty chamber, loaded magazine inserted). In the 1980's most soldiers were trained on submachine guns that were simple open bolt designs and if he was an ex-soldier he'd be trained to stow a submachine gun with the bolt closed on an empty chamber... even though that would be unnecessary for an MP5. Earlier in the movie you saw one of the terrorists/robbers slapping the bolt closed on his MP5 when he approaches John when he set off the fire alarm. Suggesting he generally kept the MP5 in a state that he couldn't just point the gun and squeeze the trigger.
