1,500/ mo for an apartment? HA! that'd be a steal on the coast in So Cal. That pricing will get you an apartment in a complex with only 2 break ins in a year.

“Friendly, but guarded” - Whoa . . . I moved here decades ago and have met people through my kids’ school, through my business, volunteer work, Meetup groups, etc., yet just realized that *you’re exactly right!* I have tons of acquaintances, but I’ve made very few actual friends. I’m an introvert, so all these years I thought it was just me. But then, “friendly, but guarded” is a spot-on description of me, too! I do, however, recommend volunteering and also connecting on Meetup. The chances of finding community there are still better than sitting at home, right? 😊

What has been your experience with MeetUp, I've never tried it but I'm cautious. Are people really open to connection or is it like more of like a big group thing? Does it feel natural, civil, or weird? lol

    @altitudeiseverything3163

@@catandthemoon I’m sure it depends on the group. I’ve been in several volunteer/public service Meetup groups and some can be pretty structured, but you’ll have a chance to get to know people when working in committees/on special projects, and they often have social events, too. These are my favorite groups because I meet people with similar values and get to make a difference on an issue that’s particularly important to me. I like feeling useful. Then there are a ton of groups for outdoor sports: hiking, mountain biking, skiing, climbing, running, backpacking, etc. I was the organizer for one of these groups and found the turnout for events to be small enough to get to know people, but that likely varies by group, as well as the location of the meetup (lower turnout for events in the mountains than nearer to Boulder). Be sure to find one that matches *your* level of fitness and experience. There are even groups for people limited to very easy walks, like those recovering from injury. But whatever your special interests are, you’re sure to find at least one Meetup group near you where you can meet others who share that passion. I strongly recommend it! Very civil, definitely *not* “weird.” “Natural”? Well… for some of us getting together with people we don’t know *never* feels natural, not at first. But I think this is actually one of the more organic ways of making friends in today’s world, because at least you’re putting yourself into an environment where you already know that you share at least one interest with others in the group. It can be a start….

You're right about the social scene here. My mom moved us here when I was a kid, and I had a bunch of friends through school. It's just that when I became an adult, it became harder to develop friendships. I don't have much of an explanation for it, either. I remember many years ago, I went to a potluck in my apartment complex, and trying to strike up conversations with people was like trying to chisel through rocks. I showed up with a few others, and none of us got a greeting from anybody in the group. They were all very engaged talking to each other, but not us. It was like we weren't even there. I had to be very patient, and finally about 15 mins. in, I found an opening, and people sort of warmed up to me. I didn't get any lasting friendships out of that. It was just sort of a nice get-together among tenants. I found a "dating scene" here some years back, but it was pretty much like watching paint dry; not interesting enough to keep up with it. I have heard from a few others that generally the big cities are where young and/or single people should live if they want to develop a social life, get a job, and establish themselves. You go to places like Boulder after you've made your money. That seems to be the "plan" a lot of Boulderites have had, if I'm reading what's been going on here well. I haven't followed that plan... I've noticed that most of the people I knew as a kid moved out of Boulder. There are a few still around, though. I didn't take that as a clue, either. I might be part of the problem. I've had a bunch of times where someone at the checkout counter at the grocery store will ask me, "Doing anything fun this evening," or, "this weekend?", and I'll say no. I'm just having an ordinary day. Listening to what you said here, I don't know if that's like the typical, "How's it going?", or if these are people who are looking for something to do when they get off work??... I dunno. As I've looked back at my life here, I have generally kept myself pretty occupied with activities, and I haven't felt like I've had a lot of free time to socialize. Though, a good part of that is I'm an introvert. I admit it. Another part of it is I feel like I have a "life project" of sorts, and I'm finding it's pretty unique; not a lot of people around who are interested in it, nor can relate to it. Maybe that's like a lot of people here. They're doing their own rather unique thing, and hanging out with people who are interested in the same stuff (therefor the cliquishness), and that's what their life is about. So, perhaps including other people who are doing their own unique things doesn't mesh well. That may also explain the guardedness, or being closed off. Since what we're doing is so unique, we have a chip on our shoulder over being misunderstood, or devalued, once people find out what we're really up to (though, I could just be describing myself with all this).

Hey, I’m 31 years old single from Ecuador. I’ve been living for the last five years in the Andean region of Ecuador and have become a super active outdoor enthusiast. Since then I’ve been wanting to move to Boulder because I created all these fantasies about being the US’ trail-running Meca. I’m applying to Ph.D. program at UC Boulder to have this actual attachment to move there in case I get accepted. During my late childhood/ early teens I lived in Queens, NY, then Ecuador, and then in Buffalo, NY in my early twenties during my undergrad. I had a rough time in Buffalo due to my social life. I was a transfer student from South America, and coming from a country where people are sociable, close and touch a lot (handshakes, hugs, kisses on the cheek, and so on) daily made it hard for me to adapt to the environment and eventually turned me into a lonely person. Buffalo’s winter was also terrible, and I was indoors 95% of the time. Later when I moved to Ecuador, the outdoors became a priority in my life. From all the info you mention in your video about the dating scene, and social life (I don’t mind not having a nightlife) I wonder if it would be a good place to move and not just a place that exists in my fantasies.

As someone that has lived all around the USA I can testify that everything you say about Boulder could be said about almost any US city. It amazes me how people think that the area they live in is unique and somehow a little more special than everywhere else. I think its human nature that has to make out like where they live or what they do is special but in reality while every place has its uniqueness they are all basically the same.

It's that way all over the USA, in urban areas and in semi-Suburbs. When everyone is from somewhere else or where everyone is a worker bot or hustler, there is no friendship and there is no love. If you are a guy, you know that women don't love anyway, at least not in the way that men do, so you are already starting out in trouble. If all of those women are worker bots or study bots, there is nothing for a man there to love. And again, this is just the way it has become. Remember, even for those who tie the knot and marry, the divorce rate in the USA is around 70%. Relationships don't work anymore in the "modern" west because nature has been upended. Sorry.

You know, I spent the first ten years of my adulthood bouncing back and forth between Boulder and Ann Arbor. It turns out I would have had the same experience if I had lived in Eugene and Jacksonville, or Berkley and Bozeman tho I prefer Missoula. What I'm saying is people are people no matter where you live and things like relationships, time and money are all important priorities, but like all things in nature change, just as our beliefs, feelings and perceptions change. Most often it comes down to our motivation, commitments and responsibilities that determine where we live (Successfully). If you ask me once I was able to determined those it didn't matter where I lived. For me it all came down to Acceptance. I discovered all my moving around was just avoidance, i.e., I grew up. I just happened to be in Ann Arbor when I did... Thank God it turns out, and me such a devout agnostic - then I was able to make a sound commitment to the world around me totally forgetting about all my petty preferences, whims and upsets. Picked a career where I'd have the greatest benefit to others and thus myself, went to the university when necessary, met someone - didn't have a damn thing in common except really liked her - started a family and the rest as they say, was determined by my choices. LEARN HOW TO LOVE YOURSELF FIRST.

I agree. Life is truly what you make it, although there is a bubbly-collectivity going on in certain places. I used to live in Big Sky, Bozeman, Coeur d'Alene, passed through Missoula and few other cities. Would you say Bozeman and Boulder have similarities? I ask because my time living in Bozeman was nice. I have a soft spot for that city and the people.

I lived in Boulder for a year in 2002 under pretty unique circumstances that allowed me to generally enjoy my experience, however I would say your overall analysis of the city resonates with what I remember. Met cool people, made some cool friends here and there, but nothing deep or lasting, and I definitely noticed an overall flakiness and lack of long-term communication with basically anyone I met there. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Love Boulder though. Lots of great memories. My great grandfather lived there and was a professor at the college. So when he was too old to live on his own at his house we got to go stay there for a year before they sold it. So I didn’t have to worry about finances or a place to live, but I was single, Young, and looking to connect and make friends, which I really didn’t do. I moved back home to Colorado Springs a year before everyone else in the family because I felt a bit isolated in Boulder after a year.

Boulder is definitely a bubble, use social media to connect with groups, outdoor and nature is a must. Boulder is considered as the 2nd silicon valley, it has a feel of Cali for sure, there are lots of "rich & old" people and college students. It's a small town that loves outdoor and nature. Now Boulder is congested with a big volume of people and the road quality can be better, we have so much tax money, they needs to hire better workers 😅

Hi Emily! Colorado Springs is very different from Boulder - some people joke that it’s the polar opposite of Boulder in that where Boulder tends to be extremely liberal, Colorado Springs tends to be extremely conservative. But! I can’t intimately speak to what it’s like to live there. But I’ve heard generally good things about living there. It’s one of the most affordable cities in Colorado (compared to other large metro areas) and it’s actually quite a large city. It has also has my favorite zoo ever there! The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo 🦒

Thank you for this wonderful advice Genevieve! Very helpful. I live in Evanston, Illinois just outside of Chicago, where I was born. It is just as or more expensive than Boulder, so it seems. I do run my music studio here, and I perform sometimes professionally as a flamenco and flamenco jazz guitarist. I am very into Tibetan Buddhism, and work closely with a Lama and a Chinese herbal/acupuncture doctor. I do have relatives throughout Colorado, and have been traveling there since I was a kid. Every time I step foot in Boulder, a deep feeling of joy and inspiration arises... Of course the natural beauty is unbelievable! I am past the age of really caring too much about nightlife, and I had my fill of culture here in Chicago and in Spain. I'm looking for somewhere where I can teach, perhaps play a bit, connect with nature and deepen spiritually. Does this sound like a good match to you? Is there anywhere else that you would suggest, if not Boulder, in Colorado? Many thanks for your advice!

Fantastic video. I lived in Boulder for 5 years, early 30s. I had a love hate with it. There really aren't a lot of late 20s mid 30s singles there that I found. It is very difficult to meet a partner there and I'm not exactly tough on the eyes. I did meet someone and we are still together, and she wants to move back but I have reservations. I just don't think the congestion and price increases are worth it anymore. There is a kind of athleisure trust fundie vibe going on as well, and various interesting spiritual circles. I have met community in my own interests along those lines (meditation for one). And I value health and nature, which a lot of people are into there of course, so that is great. I think you're right about CU students being totally fine. I would, however, caution youngsters or potential employees about Naropa. It is a failing school with a tremendous amount of imbalanced teachers and quite frankly abusive situations occurring there. Take a strangers comment on the internet for what it's worth, but I have seen and heard a lot of unfortunate things. Good luck =)

Of course! It wouldn't be a proper Boulder video without at least one Buddha in the frame :D I agree with your viewpoint. Most of the people I've met in Boulder, in their later 20s, 30s aren't natives, and Boulder attracts a somewhat specific type of person. Those who move here do so for somewhat specific reasons, e.g competitive runners, devout yogis, world class triathletes, rock climbers, etc. So generally speaking, having extended social circles isn't at the top of their list, and thus they won't be prioritizing nice dinners with friends on Friday nights at the expense of not waking up at 6am on Saturday to beat traffic to the mountains.

Boulder's great. The thing is, many in Boulder get so wrapped up in their own pursuits they forget how to be properly sociable and considerate. Boulderites have been known to focus more on powder days, their Strava suffer score, and redpointing their projects than being good friends. Any time you schedule hang out time with people, it's understood that it can be rescheduled if conditions weather conditions are perfect for whatever activity they're pursuing. Dating can be tough. I have a single friend whose minimum requirement for his dating prospects is that they climb or are seriously interested in it. As my wife says, single dudes in Boulder just want to find the adventure Barbie version of themselves. The music and arts scene could definitely be better. Serious band don't really thrive here. I'm a drummer and I've encountered several several challenges. Reasonably priced practice space can be difficult to find. I'm in a band that's furloughed for that reason. I've tried out other bands but have found many just want to get baked and jam out to Grateful Dead songs. That's not my bag. Also, it's hard to stay inside and practice and write songs when perfect weather conditions lure you outside. Yes, it's tough to develop tight friendships, but it can be done. I find you just have to take the initiative more than you might in other places.

hmm... I'm a single man mid-twenties. Might be accepting a job offer from one of those tech companies in the area. I don't know now. That being said I am an outdoorsman. Wonder if it will outweigh the dating.

Best advice for moving to Boulder? Destroy nearest town Longmont by increasing population to over 100,000 and property rental rates, and clog the Diagonal on your daily commute.

I graduated from CU and worked in Boulder from 2002 to 2008. Loved the biking, loved the scenery, good food, etc. But, laughed at the hypocrisy of the people. So many caring liberals but they sure dont like you if you dont have a lot of money and they dont much care for "diversity"

Best advice for moving to Boulder; 1. Have lots of f*n money. Otherwise be ok with living in a home filled with 4 dirty, stoned, rich white college kids. 2. & 3. Dont move there single unless you do reiki healing, are a hiking junkie or you believe in invisible toxic black mold. Otherwise you wont meet anyone. Ever. 4. Unless you are a college student its mandatory to be indoors by 9:30pm. 10:30pm on the weekends. 5. The culture is wrapped around being white and upperclass. There is a large "white guilt" clique. 6. If you like status homes, shopping at Whole Paycheck, chakra energy healing, quietly judging others for not buying organic, are allergic to gluten and used to live in California then..you'll love Boulder!

Boulder is way too crowded and the traffic in horrendous. It is very expensive and it has become way too craxy with insane with entitled-feeling idiots. It's not the nice town it used to be. It is very restrictive and not a good place to have a dog or ride a bike. There is always the danger of major floods. And danger of fires due to dryness, high winds, beetle-killed pines and grass fires.

Sounds just like Hawaii and Massachusetts. Boulder has cliques too. In Hawaii people hate outsiders, unless they are very Zen and full of Aloha. We have "beat up Haole day". Or used to anyway. Because the white man stole the native Hawaiian's lands the same way they stole the native indian lands. Seems that Boulder, is like Hawaii. Everything is built on TRUST in Hawaii. Sounds the same way in Boulder. Massachusetts too. Large population of Irish and Italians in Massachusetts. They don't rely on the law.

I lived in Boulder from '67-79 and '96-'12 I drove a cab.. The reason there's no culture is it's all kids. Great scenery only goes so far. Very yuppified, and very liberal virtue wearing on their sleeves. Beautiful CU campus full of kids from Beverly Hills along side of regular kids from Denver to farm towns who work in the taverns the rich kids go to. It's kinda rough on young local boys to compete for the girls. So a lot of CO kids go to CSU, a more honest down to earth crowd, blending in cowboys from WY. Real Colorado. Boulder is NOT Colorado. It's like California for meeting people making friends. People go to both places to become someone else. Everyone eventually leaves Boulder. Years back the City Council voted for the Kyoto Treaty. So, it's the brunt of a lot of jokes through the whole state. John Benet happened here. Check that out. The Police completely covered something up. There's a real underground evil in the town. Luciferian. Real cute town , though. A college kid with bucks will have a fine time at the slopes. Oh, one last sad thing, kids who grow up here can't afford to stay if they want. They have to leave for the prices. The Green Belt around the city drives real estate through the roof. Like a slightly tipsy passenger once said, going home after bar close, "I build custom green homes. Building a home right now, 7000 sq ft with 3 furnaces for 2 people. But it's green! By golly it's green! The Prius is parked right out front!".
