lovely detailed video and I totally agree!! i've lived here 5 years and something that always gets me is how powerful the SUN is here. it can truly be freezing in the shade and then warm in a sunny patch. also, weather fluctuations throughout a given day can be intense. Never trust a 65 degree day in February 😭 Also august and september are usually fire season and things are much less green in this time...and I hear this summer is going to be especially bad.

I am just looking for January weather info because I need to go up with my son to help moving him into an off-campus apartment in Fort Collins. I'm making my 2nd trip to Colorado, the first was in November/December and it was cold and sunny, it snowed but it that too melted :) Now I'm coming in end of 1st week of April for 4 weeks. I chose it because I read that the temperature goes up quite a few degrees compared to March. Even though you are the expert here, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't be needing to wear hats and gloves (and thermals) during my time this time :)

Nope, I lived near Lake Tahoe for a while and the snow there is nothing like here in Colorado. When I'd ski there if I'd fall in the powder I would be instantly wet, not so in Colorado. It also takes a lot longer for snow to pile up here. I had a friend who's business was snow removal at Lake Tahoe, it was a busy business for him around Tahoe City. There's not as much moisture in the snow here.

One thing also to keep in mind, you need to use sunscreen all year round in Colorado. Winter is cold, but sunny!! You can easily get sunburn even in December, January, and February. Don’t neglect sunscreen, at high elevations, the UV ray is intense even when it’s cold!

Thank you for this superb and very informative video Genevieve. How does Boulder compare to Denver, in terms of weather, is it pretty much as you've described here or slightly different? I'm planning on flying into Denver for a road trip around late March/early April (which you kind of mentioned are very unpredictable months), but only staying there maybe one or two nights as I'll be heading up towards WY or if the weather turns sour, south to Santa Fe, then West into AZ, then up into UT and canyon country. It's just that Denver seems very central for my planned road trip. This year I flew into LA and my road trip started there and then I headed east into NV, UT, AZ, and the weather was a mix, but mostly very sunny.

I have visited Oregon many times and even looked for land to retire on. There is a big difference between Oregon winters and Colorado winters in that the snow here doesn't have as much moisture contend and yours. I have skied in Oregon and powder there is not like powder here. I did not buy land in Oregon because to many from california moved there and ruined that state.

It really depends on where you’re driving! If you’re not driving directly through the mountains at that time the roads will be mostly fine unless you happen to get caught in a snowstorm. So keep an eye on weather forecast as your trip approaches! In general though, even after a snow our state has great snow plows that clean everything up pretty quick. Mountain driving when there’s snow can be a little trickier depending on where you’re going. Make sure your car has at least good all season tires so you don’t slip.

Lived here my whole life and I think it's hilarious when transplants move here in April and have their spring clothes! Oh honey, not yet. Also would say August is lots of rain as well and people always say we have "all the seasons" but we really have winter and summer and a few weeks of spring and fall. Basically April and may bring beautiful purple and pink trees and then the snow storm comes and knocks all the flowers off. We get beautiful red and orange and yellow trees at the end of September or beginning of October and then the snow comes and the trees are bare. Always prepare for crazy weather! My favourite story was the tornado in Lakewood, it was raining with no clouds, lightning, rainbow and then the hail came and within minutes the tornado tore through lakewood.

My limited experience in the inter mountain west is to avoid spring - it's too crazy, avoid summer - it's too hot, and shoot for September before the first snow falls at high elevations. Then survive winter by skiing as much as possible. I still think CO is my promised land & thanks for the local perspective. You didn't mention shortness of daylight in winter... seems Denver is same latitude as southern Ohio, so hibernation mode kicks in pretty hard with the time change in November?

Very good question bringing up sunlight! Yes, in Colorado during the dead of Winter (December) the sun doesn’t come up til close to a 7am and sets as early as 4:30pm. 🥶 But in the summer (June) we get long sunny days with the sun rising around 5am and setting close to 9pm.

If you live in Colorado you need to see the seasons as what they really are. Winter is the life giving time of year. Without winter nothing survives and I don't mean just in Colorado, I mean everywhere that depends on the rivers flowing from Colorado. Spring is the time that life springs forth, have you ever watched a new fawn being born, and summer is when spring matures. Fall is beautiful but the advance of winter is always on your mind. Fall is a time when you learn to wear layers of clothing. It's cold in the morning and as the day progresses you have to remove layers to stay cool and then put them back on as the day goes on. The beauty of the fall is apparent in so many places in Colorado but as an old time friend of mine once told me, "You can't eat the view." If you move here you have to be ready to work hard cuz it's not an easy place to make a living. We like outgoing folks that are willing to be self employed.

“And all?” So snow, rain, wind, hail, sun, wind, clouds, fog, cold, heat, all conveniently arranged for your vacation?is this how your country works for tourists? Really? All so you can take pretty pictures?

Is there a lot of places closed in Colorado because of covid ? I'm hoping by September I can make it out to Colorado or sooner the better .

Luckily, no! Besides having a mandatory mask mandate (and limited seated in some restaurants etc) Colorado feels very much like it always has before the pandemic hit.

@@GenevieveClough Awesome ! Of course minus the masks but good to hear that everything is mostly open to the public. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!

Just a small correction: "this is America" - nope. The entire continent but the USA uses Celsius, so you could have said: 'This is the US of A'

Most of the countries in America use Celsius, so refer to Fahrenheit in the USA, the county, not the whole continent. Thank you!

@@oliverpiper7210 it’s basic knowledge; it’s like not knowing that 2+2=4. And US folks always talk like if the US is the entire continent which is pretty dumb

An old saying I've heard all my life which has be fairly long, "Only fools and Texans try to predict the weather in Colorado." Another is, "It's not summer until the oak brush has leaves."

Wouldn’t it have been better for the species to let the woman go ahead and take “her FIRST EVER backpacking trip” in March/April? If she is looking for advice on a Facebook group instead of the Colorado Mountain Club, she’s already lost.
