Bentler Family Murders- Visiting the Family Graves

In 2006, Shawn Bentler drove 70 plus miles and killed his entire family consisted of his parents and 3 sisters in order to obtain their family life insurance. Thankfully, he was quickly caught and is spending his life in prison.

I knew the Bentler family. My daughters went to school with the girls. They were a nice and close knit family. Their senseless murders were as shocking and tragic as you can imagine. And as haunting as you depict it. May they rest in peace now.

I was a first responder for years and what we see never leaves us. I am now disabled and cant hold a job because mental health was never addressed decades ago. Everyone thought we just had a special personality that allowed us to see carnage and not care. I was at the Pentagon after 9/11 to provide support. No, it just all adds up and eventually the PTSD is too much.

@@susan7090 Thank you! Your post struck me like a bolt of lightening in a good way. No one has ever eluded to the fact that I could possibly overcome the PTSD. Your insinuating that I can do it, through so many words, gave me so much hope! Thank you for being an angel here on earth! May God continue to work through you and you continue to give others the words they need to hear. Giving someone hope is the most valuable gift ever given. Without it, despair sets in and society quietly loses a lot of those who protected, served, saved and fought for the people in this country. I have attended way too many funerals after the “storm” settles down and the realization of what happened sets in and is sometimes too much to process. This includes me. I would not be here today if it was not for my dog at the time alerting my housemate that there was something wrong. I feel foolish now and so that adds to the PTSD only it becomes personal. You, my dear, have truly helped me more in one set of words that years and years, decades even, of therapy did not help. 💐🌷🌸🌹🌼🌺💜 If ever I could do the same for you, I would give you all that I have.

I was doing some research on Bonaparte, Iowa (I'm related to the Meek founders), and came across your video. Thank you for acknowledging this family and telling the tragic story of what the Bentler family went through. It breaks my heart every time I hear the story, but I'm glad to see they have been remembered and memorialized. 😔🙏

My uncle had retired by the time of the murders but was the former county sheriff. He went to the trial every day and I never will forget my uncle telling me how Shawn’s maternal uncles told Shawn after the sentencing…prison is all that is keeping you alive. Forget about trying for an appeal because if you are ever released we will ensure you don’t live out the day. He should have gotten the death penalty where I wish they would give his uncles their due.

I woke up to see this story on the computer. It was the main story of the news page. I started freaking out because as I was reading, I saw the last names and my kids last name is Bentler also and their Dad's family is from southeast Iowa. But what really took my breath away was seeing my daughters name, Sheena Bentler on the screen. My daughter is 4 yrs. older. We did know they must be distant cousins. As I did more research later, I found out that the Sheena Bentler in this family was buried on my Sheena Bentler's Birthday of that year. What a tragedy. I just couldn't imagine this happening. Any time I see anything about this tragic story, I stop and listen. This will forever be etched in my memory wven though I never met them. RIP Bentler family from Iowa. So sorry for your loss to those who were close to this family. ❤
