I’m sorry, but it drives me nuts when conservatives ignorantly misquote Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, as Shapiro often does. King did NOT say, “I have dream that all people will be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.” He said, “I have a dream that MY FOUR LITTLE CHILDREN will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” King knew that white people were judged by their character, not their skin color… even though he was also cognizant of class divides and how poor people were often judged by the quality of their clothes and not the content of their character. But he was specifically highlighting how black people are judged by the color of their skin, and dreamed of a day in which THAT would stop. So please, conservatives… including Ben Shapeepee. Stop misquoting King to suit your agenda. It’s gross. (Edited for a repeated word.)

The whole spiel Hasan goes on at 6:16 is why I watch. I'm a sociologist, in part because it's the only academic field where prying into these issues was encouraged, so this is not new information for me or probably most watching this, but it's still really validating when we live in a world of Ben Shapiros and it feels like no one cares about the injustice or the information that demonstrates the injustice. The fact that he brings up mass incarceration and racism in the criminal justice system in response to marriage rates is perfect. Also...weddings cost money, and marriage isn't exactly encouraged by our tax codes and legal systems *until* you have property or high incomes to maintain. Marriage makes it harder to qualify for all those subsidies Ben just mentioned a couple of breaths before. And Re: the chatters asking about other groups and immigrant groups...immigrants in most cases (like Hasan) come from middle class and higher families in their countries of origin, and at the very least have usually attained credentials and social capital in their home countries before coming to the US. For the ones that don't, credit and small business programs are available to migrants in ways that aren't available to you if you're Black and had credit cards taken out in your name when you were 5. And, even if all that weren't the case...segregation and criminal justice discrimination still mean you're more likely to have a record yourself or have friends or family with experience in the system that make it more difficult for you to start businesses and own property.

Ben Shapiro fails to realize that the U.S Constitution only covers our basic rights. The document is not sophisticated enough to cover all of our rights in the 21st Century. This is were Federal laws come in to fill that gap. Ben Shapiro also uses the most asinine comparisons. The thing about Jews not being allowed in a country club has very little overall effect on society (even if that is happening). However, employment discrimination based on race affects the entire country and the economy More importantly Affirmative action is barely 50 years old, that is not enough time to change the income gap between African American and White Americans. Ben Shapiro consistently fails to think critically and use historical context on why certain laws and policies were put in place.

The money funneling is all normalized by real estate (a literal and figurative file cabinet front), and lobbying (legally muscle via various shells that subsidies provide). The consequences can be seen in the dehumanized rust belt, the trash islands in the oceans, and the forever chemicals showing up in umbilicals. The very economy functions by systemic corruption. Here in Minnesota in Minneapolis we have what is known as racial covenant for housing that before the Civil Rights act barred people of color from owning certain property. So if that clause was in there and you were a person of color you legally couldn’t buy that house and it can be taken from you. Nowadays it’s not enforced for obvious reasons but it still exists on some deeds and you can see the distribution of people of color throughout the cities and the state itself.

It’s actually hilarious to me that people like Ben Shapiro put on a tie and use big words to just be racist. And get paid millions for it.
I had hotboxed my car at a lake one morning. Not just a little. I had smoked like 4 bowls by myself as I was planning to spend the next 4 to 6 hours hiking and swimming (I have nerve damage in my lower back that causes me a lot of pain. Without weed these kinds of activities would be inaccessible for me, as it gives me more relief than any other medication I ever tried). A cop was patrolling the lake. You could likely see the smoke in my car from the road so obviously they pull around and flash their lights. There was no hiding what I had been doing when the literal wall of smoke hit that officer square in the face. He questioned me, I was honest about what I was doing and upfront that I was going to spend the next several hours exploring the park until I was sober. He had no reason to believe I was telling the truth obviously and at the time weed was very not legal in my state. He could have arrested me. I hadn't finished what was in my grinder and had paraphernalia still half loaded. He could have fined me or given me a ticket. He told me to make sure I was drinking enough water and to stay away from my car for a while. I'm sure if I had gone back and tried to drive he would have snagged me on dui at that point. You could say it was because the car was parked and off, I was dressed in hiking gear, cooperative, etc. And there's probably truth to that. But how much would any of that have mattered if I wasn't a young white woman? Judging from the experiences of my POC friends who got caught with weed, if I had been POC I doubt I would have been allowed to explain myself. I wouldn't have been told to stay away from the car, drink water, and sober up before I go home. I would have ended up in cuffs. Regardless of whether my actions WARRANTED arrest is beside the point. The fact that if I had a darker shade of skin I would have likely had a criminal record after that morning IS the point.

Affirmative Action is not for Blacks only. I dont like the way Shapiro focuses it like that, and given many in this audience may not know. I got some AA money for college. I am a woman from a hispanic family. I am, was, the 1st in my family to get a bachelor degree. It has helped a rainbow of people. Personally, I think it is still needed. And, further, I would support AA grants for White impoverished Appalachians. Disenfranchised people. And certainly AA is still needed for Indigenous people living on reservations. But racists cant let in the, rainbow or they are immediately exposed. Bottom line is: a very few White men got and get a cush ride, not so much has changed. And without strong vigilance, it will revert to 100 years ago, esp w ponces like BShap distorting things to ignorant audiences.
If MLK were alive today and watching Ben Shapiro's videos, he'd probably feel like the civil rights movement failed Edit: it did and didn't btw
The one thing not mentioned here, is that segregation is alive and well, just done economically; through the school system, and job/wealth distribution and living standards. Affirmative action failed, not because it didn’t work, but because it was undercut at every level in the past 40 years, step by step, INstep with the change in industry and wealth distribution…that’s IMO, If we truly believe, all people are equal “under god”…The saddest part, it hurts everyone, even the racists hurt themselves.
I swear every time Hasan Pause on ben shapiro he looks like some scheming back of the cereal box supervillain

Businesses and corporations should be above the law and discrimination is within their right according to Ben.

They just love throwing up smoke screens. Affirmative Action's problem is that it didn't go far enough. I'm one of the handful of Black Gen X children of boomers who grew up in a black, middle class neighborhood because my parents had the opportunity to both go to college, something that was denied to most black people during that time. It's not a coincidence that I've never lived in poverty, never been to jail, have a master's degree and own my own home. We're now moving in the opposite direction as a society because fewer young black people are getting those opportunities, and capitalism is never going to provide them. Reparations will.

@@thevulpinecollective Maybe true, but that goes down to what constitutes equal opportunity. It would be equal opportunity if the advantages were given to the poor (many of whom are black and Hispanic) instead of just to black and Hispanic people. If personal income was the main determining factor, or even a facet, of affirmative action, then I could say it’s equal opportunity. My childhood best friend was black, and he was a very smart man. He and I both did very well through high school, and particularly on our AP testing, where neither him nor I scored below a 4, on a scale of 1-5, on 9 tests (I mention myself because I’m Asian, the highest achieving group in academics according to statistics. I maybe scored better than him on two tests, but that’s a very negligible difference). He was accepted into William and Mary, which was something he definitely deserved and may have even been overqualified for, but the fact that he had an advantage in the process makes little sense. His family was well off and they most certainly didn’t need the help. If financial status, or really any factor that looked at individual circumstance, was considered, then I could concede that it’s an equal opportunity program, but right now, it helps the privileged and unprivileged alike based on racial status.

That would probably be the Puritanism that never really went away. Puritans were very hierarchical people who believed anyone who wasn't a Puritan (or *was* a Puritan but didn't follow all the rules) was lesser, so they discriminated against just about everyone who wasn't a cishet English Puritan man (the English bit is very important because they weren't really fans of other Europeans in the colonies since these other Europeans were generally Catholics or Quakers instead of the English immigrants' "purer" Christian denomination). Nowadays, even though no one identifies as a Puritan anymore, American society generally works the same way: if you are not a cishet Christian white man, you're going to face some sort of systemic discrimination and conservatives are going to tell you you're being treated equally and simultaneously believing you shouldn't be.

@The Vulpine Collective this is not true at all really. The Puritans were relatively egalitarian for their time and its reflected in the way that both Abolitionists and Confederates talked about them. The former considered themselves to be spiritual successors to the Puritans and the latter considered the Puritans to be rootless, cultureless zealots who were the cause for abolition. Just look up what Jefferson Davies said about them. They were definitely not perfect and they were racist as hell like every other white at the time but this is more related to the white supremacist thinking granted to them by their European ancestors and the development of capitalism in the nation.
Jesus, 30sec? Record early time, lol. Hello Hasan :-)
This goes to show how capitalism is a religion to the right. That's the only way to make sense of how, to them, it is "morally and philosophically" unjustified to ever interfere with a business that is actively discriminating against innocent members of the community. The people don't matter because a business has to be treated like some kind of sacred, holy place that can never do any wrong. A business is like a church, business owners are like the clergy, and the elite class are practically gods to these weirdos. It's absolutely ghoulish.

0:21 pretty sure that take originates with Ayn Rand in "Virtue of Selfishness" in a little essay aptly about racism and capitalism. In that it was in the context of housing and how anti-discrimination was bad for property (it's been like 2 years since I read it)
people always forget that one big factor in the economic gap happened after ww2. the new deal provided many programs during the great depression, & the GI Bill gave veterans financial assistance to get loans for housing & free/affordable college. millions of veterans benefitted from it & it basically created the middle class. but black people who risked their lives in the war didn’t get these benefits, & during the great depression they didn’t receive much assistance from the new deal to begin w/. & in the 70’s, laws were implemented to allow judges to change sentencing for crack/cocaine at their discretion & it led to longer sentencing of black people even though white people commit more drug related crimes. the crime rate between both groups don’t have as much of a difference. black people esp men are stopped unjustly at much higher rates & get significantly higher convictions & longer sentences for the same crimes white people commit. generally, in any part of the world, crime & children born out of wedlock increases as poverty does. affirmative action is a bandaid, but diversity is still beneficial. w/ it, industries like medicine & tech (basically essential) would fair better. if healthcare is used to save as many lives as possible, & POC are dying/receiving < adequate healthcare, then having a diverse set of healthcare personnel would help patients more. if AI is going to define our futures, we need diverse programmers/engineers to create them. AI is programmed to reflect a human brain, & white males dominate the field & the AI learns from their biases. if technology is meant to improve lives, a lack of diversity won’t allow it to be as efficient

This is honestly such an amazing point that is overlooked in so many discussions. White American WWII veterans (and their children, the Boomers) benefitted ENORMOUSLY from social programs in the 50s-60s.
