"It would be better for Nigel Farage if he is the only Reform candidate to become an MP" - Rachel Cunliffe
Freddie Hayward and Rachel Cunliffe discuss the unravelling of Reform UK as yet another candidate has suspended her campaign - and defected to the Conservatives.
With less that two days to go until the general election, they also discuss the hypocritical Conservative attacks on Keir Starmer who has said he will try Tory candidates who are already vying to take over the party leadership after the election.

Because it's interesting. And most of this election isn't. The media circus is otherwise a bit starved of pizazz. By that I mean there's actually not a lot to say about the Tory-Labour positions. Most people's decision to vote down the Tories was made before the election was announced and frankly Labour are going out of their way to look as safe and uncontroversial a vote option as possible. There's only so many "Tories heading for oblivion" headlines you can put on things before people's eyes glaze over. On the other hand Farage and his fascist-lite PLC add some drama and uncertainty to proceedings. Their antics are much more meaty for talk shows than Ed Davey falling off a surfboard or John Swinney blaming the English for everything again. And if Reform fails to make the impact it promised (it'll probably get 3 seats at max), it'll make for a great little rise-and-fall narrative for the whole malarkey.

I have both a firm belief that our political system is broken, and a firm belief that for a parliamentary democracy to work you need a strong opposition. I believe the two options for a true opposition to a big Labour majority are Reform and Green (The rest are too similar to Starmer's Labour) and in my opinion the greens are Economically illiterate to the point of delusion, so that rules them out for me. Also, while I in no way believe immigration is as bad for us as Farage thinks it is, the fact he is the only one who is brave enough to say that the population increase is unsustainable (which in my opinion, it is) is worrying. Kind of a 50/50 Policy/Protest vote. I wouldn't want him to be PM, but I believe Farage would be a fantastic LOTO.

Also, the tories could have levelled up and solved the housing crisis in one fell swoop: there is a lott of empty housing which could be rehabilitated in deprived areas. Creating jobs in these areas and repairing the housing stock would not have been easy or sexy, but it would have been efficient.

Incredible lack of research on Times Radio to seek the relevance of Starmer wanting family time on Friday evening. You would be falling over yourselves with criticism if Corbin had wondered why Starmer wanted family time on Friday evening.

The one thing that has - throughout this election - rubbed me the wrong way in particular is on social media, with reform voters' voracity to attack any and all non Nigel Farage/Reform political figures. I dont think I've ever seen a reform voter say something along the lines of: 'there are things that I don't agree with Nigel/Reform but...'. The 'My way or the highway' mentality is very grating to experience and has only further soured my impression, regardless of what I already may think.

TR's daughter from his 1st wife, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, said of her Dad, "My father always wanted to be the corpse at every funeral, the bride at every wedding and the baby at every christening."
