    Hey everyone - whilst this is a sit back and listen style video - you might be thinking: wouldn't it be cool if I could just get Ranzee to do [INSERT SOMETHING COOL] ... well, you're in luck! On Saturday 30th May 2020 at 2PM UTC (3PM UK, 10AM NY) - I'll be doing my live stream and I've got this connected up - so ask away :) :) :) .... link to future live stream: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a4eXpJuAgLq_eJs.html

    121 is such a good value for 2 VCFs. Sounds great without being as crazy as the Moog filters. Obviously you will want both types as well as an MS-20 style filter but I’d recommend this module to anyone who has a Neutron and wants to start getting into Eurorack.

    The 121 sounds amazing with the Neutron, used to play with a System 100 101 & 104 in school, i really miss that sound. FWIW the first thing i did with my Neutron was replace the faceplate with one set up for V2 from Audio Parasites, looks ridiculously good (black with subtle but ornate artwork) - would look great with your setup.

    Hey, thanks so much for the video! One remark though: Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that mod 1-3 are ALL for the cutoff of the filter only and not for the resonance and the fixed HPF, which, of course, would make the "fixed" in it obsolete. Makes sense because you want to route an envelope and maybe 2 additional lfo/s/h to the filter

  • @ranzee

    @ranzee

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi fantasytennistracker, I think you could be right. The arrows on the module misleadingly point to each separate section - but my tests just now are seeing that it only modulates the cutoff. ... and I just checked the documentation and this is what it says: MOD IN - Connect a voltage that controls the VCF LPF frequency. Great pickup!

    @@ranzee This is good though because there's lots of times when I want to modulate cutoff with envelope, keytracking AND a VCO for filter FM. So 3 attenuatable cutoff inputs is very welcome imo.

  • @JeffDayPoppy

    @JeffDayPoppy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ranzee Yeah, the arrows are just pointing to the corresponding attenuator. They're all for lowpass cutoff modulation. Its worth noting that if you have no inputs coming in, turn up the resonance all the way and run a CV into one of these with it mostly open, you can make-shift a VCO out of it with something close to a 1V/oct input. (Careful, its loud, but you can then run that filter into the other one to tame it.)

    To clarify, this is a clone of the Roland System 100m, not the 100. The filter on the Boland 100 filter is way bassier but less distorted than the original 100. The original 100 filter sound is angry!

    @@ranzee Probably because it's more of an OTA based filter which doesn't saturate nicely like a discrete transistor type. The OTA type sound very precise to the point and very transparent. Where as the Moogs saturate and colour the initial waves quite a bit imo.

    I used to own the semi-modular Roland System 100 (1975), full system, 101, 102 expander, sequencer and mixer. The sound was very similar, but not the same as this. I would say they both sound good, but a little different. I am a big fan of the original Sys100 filter, which is similar to the SH-5. I hope Behringer reissue it at some stage as a drop in module!

    @@ranzee Yeah I've had a look at that, its very good. I think the 100m filters are pretty good, not worse per se but definately with their own character. I really like the G-Storm SH5-VCF, which is a clone of the SH5 filter. To me its like the System 100 filter plus some extra features. But very expensive! Maybe I'll buy that in six monthsor a year!

    Interestingly at the time I did this video, there wasn't a Behringer 112 module (Dual VCO) available - so I had to use the Neurtron as a sound source. There is a possibility that the Neutron sound maybe closer to the SH-101 than the Dual VCO 112 module. I guess head on over to the Dual VCO video and hear for yourself? I guess there's subtle differences - like the PWM is massive on the 112 ... back to the filter - they are different electrically - this site has some helpful info: www.florian-anwander.de/roland_filters/

    Can't wait until these modules (particularly dual filter, dual vco, vco/vcf/vca, delay/lfo) _finally_ hit the States. Releasing VCAs and mults first was an odd choice. Anyway, what stand are you using for your niftycase and MPC? I've been looking for a stand to prop up my Toraiz SP-16 below my 6U Rackbrute. The machine is heavy and if it's angled too high the Rackbrute gets in the way of the cables.

It is a special feat from Behringer to built and Provide good Hardware for little money as massive massware.
