'BEF Water Bottle Carrier' - Reenacting Tips

A common misconception for those re-enacting the BEF in France 1939-40 is the use of a 1937 Pattern water bottle carrier with the press stud on the front. This is a re-enacting myth and this video explains how it came about.

Nice video thanks! Were the earlier bottles issued without the wool cover or were they sometimes removed to make the damn things easier to get in and out of the carrier?

I'm not aware of the felt covers being routinely removed. You can wet and stretch the carriers, they can shrink a little over the years, they shouldn't but they do .

Watching more of your videos love them. Is it possible Canadian webbing would have been issued to British troops in Europe ? Or was Canadian webbing strictly just for Canadians etc.

Early in the war it was more commonly the other way around and I believe in terms of web equipment remained so throughout the war i.e. Canadians being issued British made webbing in Europe. Oddly a lot of Canadian webbing was shipped to Australia for some reason...

Rifleman Moore Interesting. Thanks mate. I’m wondering because the Polish 1st A.D was updated with webbing equipment constantly until they landed in August 44. They were hooked up with the the Canadian army so I’m wondering if they would be supplied more by Canadian or British supplies ? I’m guessing Canadian.

I'd imagine a mix would have been seen as the Canadians themselves would have been provided with a mix of British and Canadian kit. Try and find as many original photographs as you can and work from those, that would be my advice.

@@RiflemanMoore We had a lot of it in New Zealand as well. When I was in cadets we opened up some old crates to find unissued haversacks and packs. You will find shipping would have been been quicker from North America to the Pacific. Sending Canadian production would also have put less strain on U.K. supplies.

They were sometimes carried at the rear when it better balanced the equipment. There are examples of this in some of my mannequin videos.

@@RiflemanMoore would you say this depiction of an officer with the bottle on the left is something that was commonly seen? is it merely because he's wearing his 'purse' on the right side? i.pinimg.com/564x/7c/e5/f2/7ce5f2dac662c9661c4bd13667223787.jpg
