@@MIC2077no it’s what we used in basic because we re-use them, the one I was given, was from the early 90’s and yes no matter what you do to that canteen it’ll always taste off. We even used the drink mixer we get in our MRE’s but if you don’t clean it out it gets moldy and have to explain to a drill sergeant how mold got into your canteen. (That last part doesn’t usually go to well 😅)

​@MIC2077 bleach or iodine (which acts like a weaker bleach) tablets are commonly used to disinfect water in a wilderness/survival situations You want to dilute it enough where it won't harm you but not too much that it's ineffective

Brethren, Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and fill with cold tap water. Soak overnight. Dump and rinse. If you don't mind the taste of lemon, add the zest of 2 lemons fill with lukewarm water leaving about about an inch of air past the base of the neck. Shake well and soak overnight. The oil in the lemon zest will coat the inside surface and counteract the usual plastic funky taste. Repeat the process as needed (about every couple of months. Also, when not in the field store your canteen with the cap off so the inside can dry out. Sometimes that swamp-ass taste is mold

Just Rinse really well after soaking or you'll taste bleach lol

​@@claudemiles9543Mine from the Swiss army didn't taste that bad. Leaving water in it for over a day isn't a good idea though. Pouring boiling water in it helped indeed, I had to do it several times to leech out the smelly stuff.

The really fun part is when you use one for an iron and you put the sinks on “lava from hell” hot and then let the water cool in your canteen as you go about your day. Really brings the swamp flavor out.

I had one of those as a kid. Got it from a place that sells military surplus. Can confirm that the water always tastes terrible out of it. It also has a tendency to leak no matter how you close it.

I used about a cap of bleach and filled it with warm water. Then put the cap on and shake. Empty it out and rinse out with more warm water about 4-5 times. Let it fully dry. Do this every time you use it and it should clean it out. Later, I got an aluminum canteen to replace the plastic ones. Now I mostly use Stainless steel sports bottles.

This is no joke. When I was issued my canteens from CIF they were so nasty that I refused to use them and instead went and bought 2 new canteens to use. When I returned the originally issued canteens to CIF, they refused to take them because "they were nasty as shit".

Also, I have one in my meager collection, which is aluminum, dated 1910. It has a metal cap and chain, of course, but these were also used in World War II until supply stocks were used up. By that time, the stainless steel canteens were in production.

You do understand that every soldier needs one (1,388,100 men and woman) so it’s quantity over quality, plus if you have so many troops you spend a lot of money on the vehicles, weaponry, gear, and supplies on every soldier, so we could spend/use up our entire economy on our military branches, and the USA can’t print more money because if we have so much money we’ll have to make all that money worth less than beforehand Example: so if you have 100 dollars that would be Equivalent to one dollar. So that means that every store and market will raise their prices for more money. Jokes aside, the canteen is overengineered as shit because of its importance. It's optimized to carry as much as possible while being as easy to carry as possible, as durable as possible, easy to refill in a hurry, maintain a watertight seal, and maintain a maximum level of insulation. Some of the fancy new ones in the US ISAM also have life straws, so you can actually scoop up a canteen of swamp water and drink it safely.

During my entire career, I kept the CIF issued canteens in my duffle with all of the other issued gear I never used. I bought brand new canteens from the clothing sales, and never had a problem with drinking from them. In between use, I rinsed them out really well and dried them on the dish rack. It’s called taking care of yourself and your equipment. Not too hard if you give a f and are not lazy.
